Abstract

This research is motivated by a contradictory reality about the life of traditional fishermen. Traditional fishermen have “sacred” zones for fishing activities which are protected by law due to their highest biodiversity and cultural importance to local fishing communities. On the other hand, 76 percent of the traditional fishermen are classified as poor; the level of poverty headcount index (PHI) reaches 32.4 percent. Based on this contradictory situation, 2 (two) important questions arise: what happens in the fishing area of traditional fishermen and whether the poverty experienced by traditional fishermen starst from this fishing ground. This research took place in Bagan Kuala, a village where the majority of the population are traditional fishermen. This study used an ethnographic approach with two data collection tools, which are interviews and observations. It was found that each traditional fisherman in this village has its own fishing grounds and boundaries. The boundary is marked by fish aggregating device (FAD), which also serve its purpose as fish catcher. Some of the FADs have been owned by fishermen for many generations. Outsiders often trespass this fishing ground, particularly at night where they use modern tools like trawl, destroying the fishermen’s FADs. As a result, there are conflicts and also negotiations involving the locals and outsiders who asked for their permission; the catch was divided depending on the agreement. From these findings, it can be concluded that poverty can start from the fishing ground.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the land suitability onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) inMuara Subdistrict of North Tapanuli District. The methode of this research is the survay method. From the results of the overlay from the map of soil types, map of topography, and map of heightplace, retrieved 3 (three) units of land use map. SPL 1 has a land area of 741 hectares, SPL 2 has aland area of 13 hectares, and SPL 3 has a land area of 609 hectares. With the Matching method, thenretrieved the land suitability class actual and potensial class for onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) oneach of the SPL. At SPL 1 and SPL 2 are actual land suitability class S3 (nr) while the potentialland suitability class is S2 (tc) and at SPL 3 is actual land suitability class S3 (nr,eh) while thepotential land suitability class is S2 (tc,eh).Key words : land suitability (onion)

Abstract

This public service aims to turn lokal wisdom into a guide, an attitude and behaviour in interacting with nature, as well as transforming lokal wisdom to efforts in sustaining marine life and increasing the catch of traditional fishermen. The steps to achieve these objectives are as follows: (a) conducting socialization of the Tuasan ((Fish Aggregating Device/FAD) as lokal wisdom and the medium of marine life preservation, through short videos screening, (b), holding a training on how to create FAD with the stakeholders of Bagan Kuala Village as facilitators. The output is an increase in the knowledge of traditional fishermen about lokal wisdom related to the fishing process. In addition, several FADs were handed over to the lokal fishermen of Bagan Kuala Village for communal use.Tuasan has become a guidance in the fishing process by some traditional fishermen for such a long time. Its materials consist of coconut fronds, bamboo, sand and rope; this lokal FAD is placed at the seabed as a playground and breeding location for fishes. In addition, tuasan is also used to mark the boundaries of fishing areas. Finally, tuasan as lokal wisdom of traditional fishermen needs to be preserved because it can increase the fish catching volume while it helps the preservation process of marine life

Abstract

Javanese is one of Indonesia's main ethnic groupings. In daily life, Javanese culture influences people's conduct, particularly the custom of maternal care. During pregnancy care, the Javanese adhere to their predecessors' traditions, which have become generations-old customs. This article employs a literature review approach to describe the behavior of Javanese people in carrying out pregnancy care according to Javanese culture. Many Javanese continue to believe in and adhere to maternity care traditions because they feel these cultural customs and practices benefit pregnant women. Not only are pregnant women educated about pregnancy care, but so may their husbands.
