Abstract

The study is directed to improve students’ comprehension of poems using the Two Stay-Two Stray strategy. The subject of this study is 23 students of the sixth semester of English department of FKIP at Islamic University of Malang. This study uses collaborative action research design which consists of four main steps: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The data is taken from quiz,  observation checklist and field notes. The findings indicate that using TS-TS strategy can improve the students’ comprehension of poems. The average score of students’ test in Cycle 2 is 80 and the students’ active involvement in Cycle 2 is 86%. The data are obtained from the  plementation of TS-TS strategy in improving students’ comprehension of poems

Subjek penelitian adalah 23 orang mahasiswa semester 6Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Islam Malang. Penelitian ini menggunakan desainpenelitian tindakan kelas yang terdiri atas empat langkah utama, prencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasidan refleksi. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan kuis, observasi dan catatan lapangan. Temuanpenelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi TS-TS dapat menigkatkan penguasaan siswa terhadap puisi.Rata-rata skor siswa paa siklus 2 adalah 80 dan keterlibatan aktivitas siswa di siklus 2 adlah 86% .Data ini diperoleh dri implementasi strategi TS-TS dalam meningkatkan penguasaan siswa terhadappuisi.Key Words: comprehension of poems, Two Stay-Two Stray Strategy

Abstract

Myriad studies have conveyed that metacognition is a key to successful reading comprehension in language classes. However, these studies focus on metacognitive strategies, metacognitive awareness, and metacognitive skills in ESL reading contexts. Anchored by the lack of empirical works on the EFL reading situation, this study investigated the metacognitive knowledge of Indonesian undergraduate students in their reading classes. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with four successful and four less successful EFL students. The results of this study portrayed that successful readers encompass more metacognitive knowledge, awareness, motivation, and behavior if compared to the less successful readers. It is also evidence that students with good cognition, habit, and attitude in reading activities are more successful in their EFL reading, and their cognition, habit, and attitude serve as essential elements in constructing their metacognitive knowledge. Suggestions are also discussed at the end of this paper.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to know whether or not there is significance correlation between EFL Learners’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement of the fourth semester students of Engish department at Unisma. The research design in this study is quantitative in the form of correlation design. The subject in this study consists of 30 students. In collecting the data needed to know EFL learners’ self-confidence used questionnaire, adopted from Purba (2014) and collected students speaking achievement by assessing students’ performance in the class. The result showed that r-counted of EFL learners’ self-confidence was .228 with P value .226, level of significant of P value was higher than .05 or .226 > .05. It means that there was no significant correlation between EFL learners’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement. According to the result, it can be said that the null hypothesis is accepted while the alternative hypothesis is rejected.Keywords: correlation, self-confidence, speaking achievement

Abstract

Penguasaan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris menjadi kebutuhan masyarakat, khususnya dalam pendidikan. Untuk mengukur kemahiran berbahasa Inggris diperlukan tes berstandar internasional yang disebut dengan Test of English Proficiency (TOEP) atau Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Oleh karena itu, pendampingan persiapan Tes TOEFL diperlukan sejak level sekolah menengah. Kegiatan yang dilaksanakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency kepada siswa kelas IX yang dispesifikan pada pelatihan dan pembahasan strategi mudah mengerjakan TOEFL. Hasil dari tes TOEFL menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas siswa mendapatkan nilai di atas kriteria kelulusan minimal, dan dinyatakan lulus mengikuti tes TOEFL. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan 91% siswa yang mendapat nilai di atas 400, dengan rincian 27% siswa mendapatkan skor 400-450, 39% siswa mendapat skor 450-500, dan 25% siswa memperoleh skor di atas 500. Sedangkan hanya 9% atau 7 siswa saja yang mendapatkan skor di bawah 400. Kegiatan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency juga bisa dikembangkan pada persiapan jenis tes yang lain, seperti TOEIC maupun IELTS.
