Abstract

Intensive reading plays a great role in enhancing students’ reading comprehension. Effective teaching materials are the best assistance for students. Often, in intensive reading class, lecturers neglected the students’ needs and preferences regarding the reading texts and topics being discussed. The materials only come from the lecturers’ perspectives. This study explores the students' needs and lecturers' perceptions toward the effective teaching materials of intensive reading. A questionnaire, delivered to 71 English Department students who have completed the Reading 1 course, is used for analysing the students' needs and preferences on intensive reading materials. Moreover, two English lecturers who experienced in teaching intensive reading for five years were interviewed to get detailed information about the students' needs and effective materials on intensive reading. The data were then analysed using a quantitative and descriptive qualitative approach. The result showed that the reading materials which offer various genres and topics, lists of new vocabularies, clear explanations about reading and vocabulary skills, as well as complete exercises to test the reading comprehension were viewed proper for both teachers and students. This research finding gives important information to develop effective reading materials for both sides.

Abstract

Abstract This action research focuses on how the integration of Students Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) and Authentic Materials (AMs) can improve students’ listening skill. The researchers believed that STAD and AMs help students to understand spoken English easily. Moreover, STAD allows the students to work cooperatively before they do the test individually, and AMs provide rich context materials. The research was conducted to the students of second semester English Department, University of Islam Malang and was carried out in two cycles. In the first cycle, only 46% of the students achieved the criteria of success, and in the second cycle, the result showed that the 71% of the students scored ≥75. Abstract

Abstract As reading starts to lose its popularity for most students, digital reading can serve as a solution to overcome this problem. The integration of digital reading and extensive reading practice can be beneficial for language learners. A number of researchers have conducted the studies on this issue through different perspectives. The current study mainly focuses on the students’ perception of digital reading in extensive reading practice. The qualitative approach was employed to obtain the research data. Therefore, series of questions were addressed to achieve the research objective through an open-ended interview. The result showed that the students have positive attitudes towards digital reading when they have to read extensively. The practicality, portability, flexibility, accessability, and affordances of e-books helped them to apply extensive reading successfully. Moreover, extensive reading benefits the students to develop their reading habit, discover pleasure in reading, as well as improve other skills in English. Abstract

Penguasaan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris menjadi kebutuhan masyarakat, khususnya dalam pendidikan. Untuk mengukur kemahiran berbahasa Inggris diperlukan tes berstandar internasional yang disebut dengan Test of English Proficiency (TOEP) atau Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Oleh karena itu, pendampingan persiapan Tes TOEFL diperlukan sejak level sekolah menengah. Kegiatan yang dilaksanakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency kepada siswa kelas IX yang dispesifikan pada pelatihan dan pembahasan strategi mudah mengerjakan TOEFL. Hasil dari tes TOEFL menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas siswa mendapatkan nilai di atas kriteria kelulusan minimal, dan dinyatakan lulus mengikuti tes TOEFL. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan 91% siswa yang mendapat nilai di atas 400, dengan rincian 27% siswa mendapatkan skor 400-450, 39% siswa mendapat skor 450-500, dan 25% siswa memperoleh skor di atas 500. Sedangkan hanya 9% atau 7 siswa saja yang mendapatkan skor di bawah 400. Kegiatan pendampingan persiapan Test of English Proficiency juga bisa dikembangkan pada persiapan jenis tes yang lain, seperti TOEIC maupun IELTS.
