Abstract

This study concerns the growth of Sakai entrepreneurs in Pematang Pudu Village, Duri, Riau. It is the only study that discusses the customary-law community growth in Indonesia. Thus, it has an extremely strong novelty. Since the reformation, the Sakai tribes in Pematang Pudu have owned 21 contracting companies that worked on the projects of PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia. Then, they also had an integrated agricultural complex that was modernly managed by involving a college and the government of Bengkalis district. This study used an ethnographic design where the researcher was on the research’s site for more than two months and lived with the community. The researcher was also involved in in-depth observations and interviews with informants who were selected based on their positions in GAPENSI, integrated agriculture, and traditional leaders. Data obtained were validated and decoded. And they were analyzed qualitatively and written descriptively. This study found that Sakai entrepreneurs in Pematang Pudu were grown by Chevron through the LBD program like affirmative action, and the growth of these entrepreneurs was based on kinship, so that entrepreneurs came from a big family. It could be said that Sakai entrepreneurs in Pematang Pudu were sedao capitalism or close relative capitalism. This study contributed to economic anthropology by introducing the concepts of sedao capitalism and development anthropology that stated social planning was necessarily involved the wider community in the decision-making. This study can be used by the government and companies related to CSR programs while carrying out social planning for the community.

Abstract

This study addresses the culture of debt as the socio-economic security of daily consumption sustainability of rural households in Sungai Tohor Village, Meranti Riau District. The village has become the target of many development programs from various institutions which focus on peat restoration and sago cultivation. Despite the programs, however, the number of poor household during and after the programs increased; from 30 households in 2015 to 50 households in 2016. This study aims at answer the question "What institution plays role in providing the security and the sustainability of daily consumption of households in Sungai Tohor Village? This study applied qualitative method. Data were collected through, library studies, participation observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, village officials, sago factory owners and sago labors factory  The study finds that  tauke (big-boss) play pivotal role in the security and sustainability of daily consumption in Sungai Tohor. They are willing to provide immediate cash for the villagers for mass consumption through pajak (ijon) system. This system has helped households to survive their daily consumptions, despite the fact that this system has caused many households to lose their sago plantation. Furthermore, this system also contributes to the increase number of poor households. This research concludes that rural development program that aims to improve local economic consumption and increase the capacity of local socio-economic institution should pay attention to the local socio-economic system and institution in order to formulate a locally-grounded program.  Keywords : tauke, culture of debt, subsistence consumption, pajak

Abstract

This study discussed the eastern healing practice in Sakai Batin Sobanga at Sobanga Asal Hamlet, Bengkalis, Riau. Sakai tribe is well known in the community for its healing practices. Badike is a ritual that has been widely studied from various disciplines, while the ritual practices of other Sakai tribes are not widely known. This is a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach, in which the researchers stayed for two months in Kasumbu Ampai Village, Sobanga Hamlet, Mandau District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau. Data were taken through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with informants. The informants were bomo and several community leaders. The data were analyzed descriptively and then written in the form of narrative using Kalangie and Foster’s eastern healing theory to get a general trend. This study found that the medical practice in the Sakai Batin Sobanga tribe is an integral system, so that a ritual is precondition for the next one. Badike ritual cannot be carried out if personal healing ritual, tetomeh ritual, baulin and jungkul ritual have not been carried out. The Badike ritual is the last stage of the Sakai Tribal healing practice in Batin Sobanga. Religion-based healing and western medicine practices are also found in Batin Sobanga. Bomo is always open to his patients and gives them a space to go to a doctor or tuan guru. This research contributes to the anthropology of health, ethnomedicine, especially its novelty about the process of medical practice in the Sakai Tribe in Batin Sobanga.
