Abstract

This study discussed the myths of elephants in the community of Balai Raja Village, Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency. The elephant myths are the patterns of human-elephant relationships. Before the 1980s, the relationship between elephants and humans was very harmonious. After 1980, the forestry and oil palm industries caused between elephants and humans, which has been occurring until now. This study is categorized into qualitative research with an ethnographic design. Researchers stayed in the field for 2 months to explore information in depth through observation and in-depth interviews. The data was analyzed qualitatively and then written in this report. This study has found out that the conflict between elephants and humans is determined by human attitudes and behavior. The myth of the elephant is a symbol of efforts to conserve natural resources and a tool for compliance with societal norms and values. Elephants have protective properties and are very empathetic to babies. This study proposes that elephant mitigation can use a mythical approach by combining elephants’ and human’s habitation. This study contributes to the science of Anthropology, especially about the conservation of animals and nature. This study proposes that elephants should not be called pests, but a chain of human mutualism, where the elephants and humans live in harmony as a unified ecosystem.

Abstract

The oral tradition is one of the traditions that can still be found in Old Malay Puak. For example, Gurindam, Koba, Rindai and so on. One of the oral traditions in Puak Melayu Akit Hatas Pulau Rupat is the tradition of Prohibition. Parents used to use the expression forbidden to forbid their children and grandchildren in teaching them how to behave so as not to harm themselves and others. The expression of prohibition varies, however the discussion of prohibition in this paper revolves around the variety, content and meaning of prohibition in community economic activities, including activities in the fields and at sea. Prohibition Usually is associated with unseen nature, natural disasters or animals which, if violated intentionally or not, will cause undesirable things. The number of shifts in cultural values due to the entry of new people around Puak Melayu Akit Hatas does not affect the public's view of the oral tradition. This paper is intended to describe how the sound and meaning of prohibition and how it is used in several economic activities in society.

Abstract

The tourism sector is the main pillar of economic development in the context of the modernization era. So it can be said that tourism is an industry. The tourism industry that is being developed is based on culture. In the Nagari Sujunjung Indigenous Village, the development of a culture-based tourism industry can be seen through changing cultural elements such as the Rumah Gadang and Bakaua Adat rituals which are packaged in the form of a Matrilineal Festival by the government. This packaging is often referred to as commodification. With a qualitative method, the results show that the two cultures (tourism and local culture) become 'must' be modified to bridge and as a lubricant to respond to global challenges, so a dialogue will occur between the two. The dialogue is due to tourism having 'trace' and 'official' standards as well as culture having deep-rooted ideals. On the one hand, the noble cultural values of the community continue to be 'glorified' but on the other hand it is very interesting to be 'packaged'. However, local wisdom continues to be praised as a tradition that needs to be cared for and passed on, but its material and spiritual references are getting faded and messy. Apparently (in the era of globalization) it is not the tradition that needs to be defended, but the image of the tradition which is very easy to display (trade). On the other hand, efforts to commodify culture as a tourism industry are built on orientalist discourses, such as the living museum in the Nagari Sijujung Indigenous Village.

Abstract

For the Mentawai people in Rereiket, pigs are very important animals. This is reflected in their social and cultural life through traditional ceremonies (punen). Pigs are used as an intermediary (gaud) in a traditional ceremony whose purposes are offerings, worship, symbols and requests for thanks and fortune-telling activities. This is motivated by the belief of the Rereiket People, namely Arat Sabulungan which regulates human relations with nature, fellow humans and other creatures (spirits). In addition, pigs also function as the most important property, because they can be used as dowry payments (alat toga), tulou (customary fines) and trade (economics) and otcai (gifts). The relationship that the Rereiket people build with pigs is a cultural ploy, where the insistence on modernization through development has obscured the culture of the Rereiket people. Thus, inside the Uma (traditional house) the skull of a pig's head is displayed and becomes a symbol that the ritual continues. The pig skull is called Ute 'Sainak which means that even in the urgency of modernization the cultural agenda (custom rituals) still takes place in the living spaces of the Rereiket people. So that Ute' Sainak became a strategy to maintain the life and cultural identity of the Mentawai people in Rereiket.

The government believes this plan will provide equitable benefit for the community.  Nevertheless the current program has brought resistance from the community as considers to have a negatif impact on their future livinghood. It appears to give priority to the government’s national perspective of the project, without talking in consideration the long standing local experience and knowledge of the geothermal environment and its potential hazard. The government has discounted the long term negative effect of the exploration of the environment as put forward by local community. It seen the community’s raised local knowledge on hazardous effect has been left out at this planning stage.
