Abstract

This research aimed to find whether or not there was any significant difference in the speaking achievement of students taught by using language games, compared to those taught by using a problem solving method. This research applied a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 50 students who belong to two groups. The technique of taking sampling was systematic random sampling. The instrument of the research was a structured interview. SPSS 22.0 was used to analyze the data. The researcher found that there was any significant difference in the speaking achievement of the students taught by using language games, compared to those taught by using a problem solving method. In other words, language game was more effective than problem solving method to improve the speaking skill of the fourth semester students of English Study Program at State Islamic Institute of Palopo. The mean score in the language game group was higher than the mean score in the problem solving method group (69.9 43.2). The difference of those mean scores was statistically significant; it is based on t-test value at a significant level 0.05, the probability value was lower than the significant level (0.00 0.05).

The sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling. The instrument of the research was reading test. The writer gave pretest and posttest to the students. The result showed that the students` mean score of posttest in experimental group was 85.33 and pretest was 71.03. The mean score of posttest is higher than the mean score of pretest (85.33 71.03). While the mean score of posttest in control group was 72.46 and the mean score of pretest was 70.86. The mean score of posttest was higher than the mean score of pretest (72.44 70.86). The result of statistical analysis the experimental group for a level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 29; the probability value was smaller than α 0.00 0.5 and the result of statistical analysis for the control group showed that the probability value was bigger than α .074 0.05. As a result, there is a significant difference in reading achievement between the students who were taught by using CIRC technique and those who were taught by non-CIRC technique. Abstract

This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of mistake buster technique is able to improve the English grammar mastery and finding out the students’ interest toward the use of mistake buster technique. The research employs a quasi-experimental research method. The population and sample consist of 66 students which belong to two groups; 33 students in experimental group and 33 students in control group. The research data are collected using grammar test and questionnaire which are analyzed by inferential and descriptive statistics through SPSS 17.0 and Likert Scale.  The research result indicates that the use of mistake buster technique is more effective than non-mistake buster technique in improving English grammar mastery of the ten grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar in academic year 2014/2015. The students’ result of posttest for experimental group is higher than the students’ result of posttest for control group. It is proven by the mean score of posttest of experimental group is higher than the control group in grammar test (63.87 > 40.00). The difference of those mean score is statistically significant; it is based on t-test value at significant level 0.05, the probability value is lower than significant level (0.00 < 0.05). Then, analysis using Likert Scale shows that the students’ interested to learn grammar by using mistake buster technique. It is proved by 60.6% students were in very interested category.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to see whether or not project-based learning improves students’ speaking skills and their perceptions towards the implementation of PBL. The author used the quasi-experimental method. The population was 120 students. The research sample was class VIII A consisted of 16 students as an experimental group, and class VIII B consisted of 16 students as a controlled group. The instrument of the research was a speaking test and questionnaire. The author collected data through pre-tested the students, giving treatment, post-tested, and spreading questionnaires through Google form. The data were analyzed by using SPSS program version 28. The students’ result of average score in the pre-test of the experimental group was lower than the average score in the post-test (35.81 < 64.94). Meanwhile, the average score of the students in the pre-test of the controlled group was lower than the average score in post-test (41.00 < 50.75). It means that the average score of post-test in the experimental group is better than the average score of post-test in the controlled group (64.94 > 50.75). The result of the questionnaire shows the "very high" category which means that project-based learning is beneficial for students. The author revealed that project-based learning significantly increases the students’ speaking skills. This research can be used by the teachers as a reference to improve the quality of the English teaching and learning process, especially in E-Learning classes and provide fun classroom activities for the students.

Abstract

The researcher intended to find out and describe the application of the three-level guide strategy in increasing the students reading skill of narrative text. Through classroom based research, the researcher had conducted nine meetings for three cycles. The participant of this research was the seventh grade students of junior high school. 33 students of VII-2 class were involved in this research, the researcher used observations and objective tests as her instrument. The data were collected and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The researcher calculated the quantitative data from tests in each cycle through Microsoft excel. The researcher used classroom observation checklist to find out the students participation in learning. There was no improvement in students reading test scores in cycles 1 and 2. However, in cycle 3, students' reading test scores increased. In cycle I the students average score was 48.78, the students average score in cycle II was 58.28, and in the last cycle, the average score was 73.4. The researcher reveals that the three-level reading guide strategy increases students reading skills. This research is useful for teachers, students, and further researchers.

Abstract

English for Islamic Studies is taught as the general subject in the State Islamic Institute of Palopo. Therefore, the researchers aimed to develop valid English materials for learners of the Islamic education study program. The researchers applied the 4-D model by Thiagarajan et al. It consists of four stages namely, defining, designing, developing and disseminating. There were 68 learners who answered a questionnaire for needing analysis, 23 learners involved in the field try-out, and three lecturers assessed and reviewed the product. Questionnaires and field notes were used as the research instruments. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The researchers created English materials in the form of a textbook in which it consists of ten units. The topics are 5 pillars of Islam, 6 pillars of faith, daily life of a Muslim, Islamic figure, ulul azmi, Amal Ma’ruf Nahi Munkar, halal and haram, Islamic education in Indonesia, Muslim generation, and religious moderation. The data gathered during the trial period revealed that the textbook was suitable to learning process, met the learners’ needs, and it was well-received by the learners. They were engaged, motivated, and excited to complete the activities outlined in the textbook. Therefore, the textbook can be used by lecturers and learners in Indonesia as a learning medium

Abstract

This research aimed to develop the appropriate weblog for learning English grammar of the twelfth-grade students at SMAN 4 Palopo. Furthermore, the researcher applied Research and Development (RD) method under the ADDIE model by Reiser and Mollanda in 1967. It comprises five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This research was located at SMAN 4 Palopo. The subjects in the research were the twelfth-grade students at SMAN 4 Palopo, and 42 students became respondents for the development tryout. This research used several instruments to collect data, i.e., need analysis questionnaires, experts’ judgment questionnaires, and students’ perception questionnaires. The technique of data analysis was a quantitative descriptive analysis technique. This research shows that the developed basic English grammar material through blog learning for the twelfth-grade students at SMAN 4 Palopo was appropriate. The value from the expert’s validation showed that the material expert was 4.33, the language expert was 4.80, and the media/IT expert was 3.44. Thus, the overall mean score for product validity was 4.52 under the excellent category. The result of the questionnaire on students’ perception obtained 4.23 in the excellent category.
