Abstract

Tambak Rejo is village in south of Malang has two hamlets there were Dusun Tambak Rejo and Dusun Sendang Biru. This village under Kecamatan Sumbermanjing Wetan which has coast line for 85.92 km. Sendang Biru became center of fisheries activities due to directly facing of Hindian Ocean that rich with pelagic fish such as tuna, tongkol and lobster. In this village there was a Nusantara fisheris landing port that allowed vehicle more than 30 GT lean. 500 m in front Sendang Biru laid a Sempu Natur Preserve that still has origin flora and fauna inside. The red color land in Sendang Biru has proved that this area rich on Fe and Al also many natural carst can be found easely. The aim of this program were to build coral garden in Sempu Island water and to educate community the importance of coral. Coral garden used steel frame with doom and pyramid shape. Coral will have transplanted and tied into frame until growth well. The donor coral was Acropora sp (representative of branching coral), Goniastrea aspera (massive coral) and Leptoseris yabei (foliose coral). We used participatory rural appraisal (PRA) to envolve communities in this program.

Abstract

Pacitan Bay is open water directly front on the high seas Indian Ocean, so the Pacitan Bay have many potential threat of strong waves that can cause abrasion or erosion in the coast. Coral reefs damage around the coast of East Java, mainly in the Pacitan can cause the flow of strong wave there is no barrier to reduce the speed of the wave. Green belt in the coastal of Pacitan is limited, so the potential damage to coastal erosion due to strong waves can reach wider. The government needs to do this disaster because effect of erosion

Abstract

Kondang Merak laid on South of Malang facing of Indian Ocean. This area had small fisheries village which inhibited by 30 families. 12 fisheries worked as compressor diver who collect lobster and abalone surrounding of reef in Kondang Merak. Those commodity usually hand collected by fishermen using compressor dive. During dive fishermen ignored depth, bottom time or tools that they used. We are introduced self contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) training for fishermen. Aims of this training were to give: knowledge about diving and physical and environment aspect influence dive activity; technical use of SCUBA and caring for diving apparatus. Good skill and technic will obviate fishermen from decompression sickness disease (DCS) and nitrogen narcosis which have dangerous impact for health of fisherman in Kondang Merak. Keywords: Kondang Merak, compresor diver, SCUBA, DCS, compressor

Abstract

Miang Island is located at coordinates 118° 0' 20" E - 0° 44' 0" N which is administratively in Sangkulirang District, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan. Coral reefs on Miang Besar Island have an area of ± 218.8 ha, with the best coral cover in the waters of Sangkulirang District and one of the best in East Kutai Regency. Reef fish have an active role in coral reef ecosystems because they can be indicators of the health of coral reef ecosystems and can be used to measure the level of suitability of their habitats. If the condition of the coral is damaged, the number of reef fish that inhabit it will decrease because the habitat does not meet the availability of food ingredients and the loss of breeding grounds. Coral reef data retrieval using the UPT method and reef fish using the UVC method. The percentage of coral cover on Miang Island is in the moderate to bad category where the average percentage of cover is 21% which is in poor condition (<25%). The total abundance of fish at station 1 was 0.45 ind./m3, station 2 was 0.10 ind./m3, station 3 was 0.06 ind./m3, and station 4 was 0.09 ind./m3. The genus Acropora is the dominant coral genus at all stations and the Pomacentridae family is the dominant family of reef fish at all stations. The relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the abundance of reef fish is very strong with an R2 value of 72.13%.

Abstract

Ukuran karang di P. Sempu rerata menunjukkan > 5 cm2 yang berarti sudah dewasa dan mampu melakukan reproduksi, sedangkan rekruitmen sangat rendah dengan indikasi sedikitnya jumlah luasan karang kurang dari 4 cm2.Kata kunci: cagar alam, bentuk pertumbuhan, reproduksi, konservasi, karang kerasABSTRACTThe abundance of coral reef in Sempu Island nature reserve was under 10 ha, in which they were a winner from environment and human threats. The environment has big role to select scleractinian coral in this area that resulted 9 coral life form as the main foundation of coral reef in Sempu nature reserve area. Knowing the coral size distribution as important to know of coral age in term determining the health of coral reef ecosystem. Class frequency of colony size gave the key information of coral competition, puberty and regeneration ability. We choose 4 station (Watu Mejo 1, Watu Mejo 2, Teluk Semut 1 dan Teluk Semut 2) to take data. Data colony size was taken by 1 x1 m quadrat along 50 m in 5 m depth. The highest colony size was Acropora branching (ACB) about 145,811.67 cm2 and the lowest one was mushroom coral (CMR) about 414.35 cm2. Life form of coral can be early detection of coral reef health. Dominance of massive coral means the coral reef under the high sedimentation, strong current or exposed by air frequently. The coral colony size in Sempu nature reserve showed > 5 cm2 that indicate they were in maturity and have capability for reproduction but the coral recruitment was very low due to few number of coral has less than 4 cm2 in colony size. Keywords: nature reserve, life form, reproduction, conservation, coralCitation: Luthfi, O.M., Rahmadita, V.L., dan Setyohadi, D. Abstract

Pantai Kondang Merak has a biodiversity of marine resources, so that the community always depend on exploration and exploitation activities through fishing, and catch lobster, sea cucumber, abalone and some of algae with diving activities. The diving activities usually in 5-30 m depth in reef area, using air compressor that will danger their live. This compressor has long regulator hose (about 50 m), during diving process the hose will be tied in their waist with 5-7 kg lead, it similar with weight belt in SCUBA diving. The hose also has other function as keep the diver from water current drifting. This method will disrupt the air supply from compressor to mouth face and endanger the life of diver. The safety diving standard is using a SCUBA set, that has a portable air supply and clean air, unlike the air that resulted by the conventional compressor. The aim of this activity is to give safe diving method and give ecotourism skill to the fisherman in Kondang Merak, thus avoiding fisherman from decompression sickness and seek alternative livelihood during west monsoon.
