Abstract

A riverbank wetland has an important ecosystem service, so that should be a city conservation area. The settlements on wetland riverbanks would decrease the ecosystem services. But for some cities, it is difficult to avoid. To reduce the damage to the ecosystem services, it is necessary to identify the ideal development according to the ecosystem approach. This study identifies the gap between the factual house type and the ideal type according to the ecosystem approach. The factual home types were identified through field observations, whereas the types of recommendations were identified based on an assessment of the experts. The results indicated that there was a gap of the house types between the factual and the recommendations. Therefore, the planning should adjust the house types between the factual and the recommendation of the ecosystem approach. The settlement planning that equilibrates the community needs and the sustainability of ecosystem services.

Abstract

The study examines the morphology of the settements along the Musi riverbank and focuses on the association between the settlements morphology and the characteristic of the river. Musi River consists of three river zones, i.e. upstream, middle, and downstream. The specific morphology that was studied is the distance of the buffer area, the building orientation, and the housing typology that were compared to the physical characteristics of the river and the socio-cultural of the communities. The study data was collected through satellite map and field survey on three settlement sites for each zone, including maps, sketches, photographs, and interviews. The results show the main factors influencing the settlement morphology is the community's dependent on the river. The function of the river for daily life activities influences the distance and the orientation of the settlements. The more the functions of the river for the daily life, the closer and the more oriented their settlements are to the river. Therefore, the river disasters, such as flood and erosion should keep the settlement away from the riverbank. However, the dependence on the river creates the adaptation to on building the settlements that adapt to the natural cycle. It also establishes the morphology of the settlements on the riverbank.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Residential activities on the banks of the river produce a lot of garbage that floats in the river overflow. These settlements lack waste management systems and infrastructure and littering behavior. The results of this study recommend building and environmental modifications related to these problems. The modification takes into account the geographical conditions and the resident behavior. The research location is in a densely populated residential area on the banks of the Musi River, Palembang. Data was collected through a survey by observing the function and physical structure of the building as well as interviews that recorded the behavior and perceptions of the local community. Observations show that the most waste accumulates under stilt houses and yards on land that is flooded by a river overflow. Piles of garbage were also found at small rivers stream. Garbage drifts between houses on stilts without fences carried by the water flow. Most residents always litter on land without owners or in the streams. Making a net fence as a barrier between the yard and the under a building, as well as structuring the landscape with wetland vegetation, can prevent the drifting away garbage for facilitating disposal. can also be modified with wire netting as a barrier for littering.

Abstract

Aim: This study examines the current living culture of riverbank residents by observing the choice of factual house and the house preferences. A house is the physical characteristic of cultural products indicating the current living culture. The riverbank settlements are part of the historical development of the city of Palembang. Methodology and Results: This research focuses on the physical form of residential buildings from the perspective of socio-cultural preservation. Restoring the characteristics of the riverbank area is a necessary potential. The design process can be directed toward technical innovation, social aspect and the use of materials that correspond to the features of the area. Furthermore, the cultural ecological interaction has created a living culture in the riverbank. This is evident in the constructed houses of residents with structure, technology, and material conforming to the fluctuating conditions of the ecosystem. The settlement’s characteristics generate an image of a river city, which have also become a tourist attraction in Palembang. However, the living culture has changed due to the innovation in building technology, the shift in the focus of development, and the availability of natural resources which diminish these features. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: This will encourage tourists to visit the developed areas with a preservation approach, integrating new cultural living with the conservation of the river city features for tourism interest. Furthermore, the preservation of tourism activities are not only unchanged, but also an adaptation flexibility to continuously look for new forms for the symbiosis between man and nature.

Abstract

The research discussed a strategy for revitalizing the slum settlement environment by previously mapping the geographical condition, the culture of living on the waterfront, as well as waste management practices by residents along the banks of the Musi River, Palembang. Most riverbank slums in the big city occupied dirty neighborhoods filled with garbage and waste. Most of the revitalization programs for riverbank waste management in Indonesia only focused on improving the physical quality with less attention to understanding the social and cultural aspects. These improvements resulted in temporary progress that relied on external interventions and subsidies. The interventions often resulted in temporary improvements because of the unsustainable approach. The field surveys collected data observations and interviews from homeowners within a radius of 100m from the riverbanks in four settlements with different physical environmental conditions. The survey collected data on communities’ use of river water for daily use and coping with flood conditions. The researchers processed all data to get a complete picture of the residents’ cultural view of living, potential, and constraints on waste disposal management. These results reveal the misunderstanding that residents in the settlements have no awareness of environmental cleanliness. On the contrary, they have the intention of mutual cooperation for environmental management. It is a potential strength in social ties and dependence on the community for developing sustainable environmental management strategies based on community empowerment. Improvements, both physical and infrastructure, should strengthen social bonds and community involvement in environmental management. Support in the waste disposal and management should aim to increase community cooperation in managing and monitoring the environment independently, not only at increasing awareness of cleanliness and health as always.

Abstract

The riverbank has a unique landscape and socio-cultural character of the community. The area is the transition of the innerland and river ecosystem. The ecological function is very important for balancing the both ecosystems. The Living activity of dwellers creates a socio-cultural bond to the river. This study plans the housing riverbank with a socio-ecological approach. The approach considers the sustainability of the ecosystem and social culture of the dwellers. The research was conducted in Palembang, a big city in Indonesia that has evolved in wetlands on the riverbanks. The current development eliminates the character of the physical and socio-cultural landscape. This study uses the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) method which is part of the Multi-criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method. MAUT can determine alternative planning through attribute assessment by predetermined objective criteria. The decision making is based on the assessment by experts from various fields. It shows the best alternative depends on the attribute level of the house type. The attribute value is very dominant compared to other attributes. Environmental attributes quite influential are the size of the buffer zone and the construction of riveredge wall. The best alternative result indicated that the planning should accommodate the activities of residents who interact closely with the sustainability of river ecosystems.
