Abstract

A descriptive study of future teacher students’ mental models of essential concepts in Cell Biology was carried out through explanatory mixed-methods. Some students (n=40) of Biology Education Universitas Negeri Semarang were involved as the research subject. We used a diagnostic test, structured interview guides, and field notes to describe students’ mental model. In the early stage, we prepare a diagnostic test performed essential concepts of Cell Biology. Secondly, we define students’ mental models map based on their answers. Thirdly, we identify factors which affect students’ mental models. Exploration of mental models was conducted through structured interviews with students representing each category. The interview focused on reasoning and argumentation students’ abilities in answering the question on the test item. The research finding describes that students’ mental model in Cell Biology is grouped into three categories, macro-mental to think based of basic content, micro-mental in correlation of content, and intuitive-mental or misconception. This finding can be used in improving research-based learning in Cell Biology.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of media clue in the puzzle that used in science teaching on the theme of sound and to determine the effect of the use of clue in the puzzle in the students’ learning activities. The metode of this research is Research and Development (R & D).The research and development outcomes include the validation results of matter and media expert, student activities and learning outcomes. The validation of media experts reach score 97.5% and validation of matter reach score 93.75% and include in very well criteria. The learning outcomes of experimental class also better than the control class. The results shows that development of clue in the puzzle media is feasible to use in science teaching on the theme of sound and to increase the learning activity of students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe android-based learning media's role in teaching students critical thinking skills and scientific attitudes. The learning media are Androwebic (android-based webcomic) and E-Bokartumban (e-book on plant diversity in Banjarnegara), developed previously. This research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 301 students, six biology teachers and six high school students. The data collected includes critical thinking skills, analytical skills, scientific attitudes, environmental care attitudes, media components supporting student competence, and teacher and student responses. Data on critical thinking and analytical skills were measured using tests and non-tests. Other data were measured using non-test instruments, including interview guides, scientific attitude observation sheets, students' environmental care attitudes, media component observation sheets, and student and teacher questionnaires. Quantitative data on critical thinking and analytical skills were analyzed using the n-gain test, while other data were descriptively analyzed. The research results showed that the E-Bokartumban and Androwebic components support students' critical thinking skills, analytical skills, and environmental care attitudes. Androwebic can train students' analytical thinking skills and scientific attitude. The two media developed were considered very helpful in the learning process. The study concluded that Android-based media in Androwebic and E-Bokartumban have a vital role in training critical thinking skills, analytical skills, scientific attitudes, and environmental care attitudes.
