Abstract

In their development, the languages referred to as Bahasa Indonesia (orBI, for short) and New Javanese (or NJ, for short) have absorbed a quantity oflexicon from Sanskrit. Much of the same lexicon has been absorbed from Sanskritinto BI and NJ. Granted that BI and NJ influence each other, perhaps BI hasabsorbed the Sanskrit lexicon from NJ or vice versa. However, referring tohistorical aspects, it is highly likely that the two have had access to Sanskrit froman old or ancient version of Javanese because Sanskrit has no longer been a livinglanguage since the 10th century. The process of the absorption of the Sanskrit lexicon into BI and NJ isdivisible into at least three types: (1) without phonological, morphological, andsemantic changes, (2) with phonological and semantic changes but withoutmorphological changes, (3) with phonological changes but without morphologicaland semantic changes, The last-mentioned type is further divisible into at least fivesub-types: (1) with a consonant shift, (2) with a long vowel changed into a shortone, (3) with a double consonant changed into a single one, (4) with a phonologicaladdition, and (5) with a phonological elimination. Keywords: Sanskrit, Bahasa Indonesia, Javanese, lexical contribution

Abstract

People in rural Javanese communities usually still faithfully make use of Javaneseidioms in expressing matters of sexuality. Javanese idiomatic expressions areamong the means of expressing sexuality which are traditional in nature. Suchexpressions are combinations of terms possessing semantic and cultural meanings. In them eastern ethics are strongly embedded. The use of such ethical idiomsenables rural Javanese parents to inseminate expressions of sexuality withrelatively more ease in feminine members of their society. The use of Javanese idioms is a manifestation of the expression of sexualitysymbolic in meaning. This is justified because the Javanese personality is revealedin the Javanese saying Wong Jawa iku nggoning semu., which means that theJavanese are where symbolism is. Some types of the idioms often used inexpressing feminine sexuality are (1) tembung entar, which is a figurativeexpression, (2) peribahasa, which is an expression describing someone’s act, (3)saloka, which is an idiom in the form of an expression using the name of an objector animal, (4) pepindhan, which is a comparison of a sexual object to anotherobject, (5) panyandra, which is a description of a phenomenon of sexuality, and (6)piwulang, which is a teaching on sexuality. Of these, the first two types are themost often made use of. They are considered comparatively more easilyunderstood by those using them. Keywords: idiom, sexuality, women

Abstract

This ethnolinguistic analysis delves into the world of Panakawan characters in the Javanese play "Semar Mbangun Kahyangan," unveiling the profound tapestry of Javanese philosophy into their portrayal. The Panakawan, celebrated for their wit and linguistic artistry, stand as iconic figures in traditional Javanese wayang (shadow puppetry) and theater. This study explored their linguistic and cultural dimensions, illuminating their role as carriers of Javanese wisdom and cultural values. Employing ethnolinguistic methods, it examined the linguistic features, discourse patterns, and cultural intricacies interwoven within the dialogues and actions of the Panakawan characters. The analysis uncovers language's role in conveying Javanese philosophical concepts, moral teachings, and the interconnectedness of life and society within the play. It dissected the linguistic strategies, humor, and linguistic playfulness of the Panakawan, revealing their capacity to impart profound philosophical messages while captivating audiences. Furthermore, this study also revealed the inseparable bond between language, culture, and the embodiment of Javanese philosophy in the play "Semar Mbangun Kahyangan." It offers insights into the Panakawan's function as cultural emissaries and guardians of the Javanese ethos. This ethnolinguistic exploration extends an invitation to readers to uncover the concealed Javanese philosophy within the eloquent expressions and deeds of the Panakawan. It is expected to provide a significant contribution to ethnolinguistics, cultural studies, and philosophy by spotlighting the Panakawan characters' pivotal role as conduits for conveying the profound philosophy that shapes Javanese culture and character.

Abstract

The will of the first Mover, who is none other than God, is inextricably linked to the existence of people and everything else in the cosmos. God is the reason why everything has a purpose, including humans. Aristotle, a philosopher, held this philosophical idea to be true. The Javanese, on the other hand, have their own ideas on how to worship God as the architect of the universe. This approach, known as satataning panembah, includes sembah catur or four different forms of worship. Serat Wedhatama by KGPAA Mangkunegara IV contains sembah catur. The goal of qualitative descriptive research is to identify the connections between the two, notably Aristotle's conception of God and the idea of satataning panembah, through gathering evidence through literary study. The study's findings indicate a connection between God and the four forms of worship practiced by the Javanese people it s sembah raga, sembah cipta, sembah jiwa, and sembah rasa according to Aristotle. The connection is that there is a means to reach human unity with God, which is the height of human perfection.
