Abstract

Tujuan pembelajaran bahasa termasuk bahasa Inggris adalah dapat menggunakan bahasa itu untuk mengungkapkan ide, gagasan, dan informasi atau untuk tujuan komunikasi. Pembelajaran ke arah itu didasarkan pada materi dan proses pembelajaran yang lebih baik. Materi ajar dapat menunjukkan  bagaimana pengungkapan makna  sesuai dengan konteks sosial. Pada intinya pembelajaran bermuara pada peningkatan mutu keempat keterampilan berbahasa khususnya speaking bukan penguasaan leksikogramatika. Untuk mencapai tujuan demikian LPTK harus merekonstruksi program perkuliahan lebih baik dengan lebih menekankan penguasaan keterampilan di dua tahun pertama sampai mahasiswa bisa berkomunikasi dengan baik, menulis dengan baik, membaca dengan baik. Tanpa pemilikan keterampilan demikian produk LPTK tidak akan bisa menjadi guru profesional dan berakibat pada kurangnya penghargaan masyarakat maupun pemerintah terhadap profesi guru termasuk LPTK.  Menjadi guru profesional ia harus cerdas, kreatif, dan responsif terhadap perubahan sehingga ia diharapkan memiliki kemampuan merancang pembelajaran bermutu  berkelanjutan.   Kata Kunci : Konteks sosial, leksikogramatika, gungsi bahasa, pengungkapan makna, dan pengembangan mutu

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) Meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan siswa kelas XI SMA dengan menggunakan strategi Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), (2) Meningkatkan keaktifan siswa setelah mengikuti pembelajaran pemahaman bacaan yang menggunakan strategi DRTA. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman bacaan siswa. Ini dapat dilihat dari rata-rata hasil test siswa ; Nilai rata-rata kelas pada Pre-test adalah 65,92, nilai rata-rata kelas pada siklus I adalah 72,19 dan nilai rata-rata kelas pada siklus II adalah 78,33 . Faktor utama dari peningkatan hasil belajar ini adalah ketertarikan siswa dalam pembelajaran pemahaman membaca dengan penerapan strategi DRTA Berdasarkan data ini, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran dengan menggunakan strategi DRTA dapat meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan siswa dan proses pembelajaran lebih menyenangkan. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini bisa menjadi masukan bagi guru-guru bahasa Inggris dalam memilih dan mengembangkan media dan strategi pembelajaran yang tepat terkait dengan pembelajaran ketrampilan membaca (Reading Skill) di Sekolah Menengah Atas. Kata Kunci: bahasa inggris, strategi pemahaman bacaan directed reading thinking activity Abstract: This study aimed to: (1) Improve reading comprehension class XI student of SMA using strategies Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), (2) Increase the involvement of the student after attending a reading comprehension lesson using the strategy DRTA. The results of data analysis showed that there were significant increases in students' reading comprehension. It can be seen from the average student test results; The average value of the pre-test grade was 65.92, the average value of the class in the first cycle was 72.19 and the average value of the class on the second cycle is 78.33. The main factor of this learning outcome is student interest in learning to read with comprehension strategy implementation DRTA Based on this data, it can be concluded that learning by using strategies DRTA can improve students' reading comprehension and learning process more fun. We hope this research can be input for teachers of English in selecting and developing media and appropriate learning strategies related to learning reading skills (Reading Skill) in high school. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the types of ideational metaphor in Bruno Mars’ Songs. The objectives of this study are to find out the metaphorical codes applied in Bruno Mars’ songs and the reason of the writer to use metaphorical codes in the songs. The data are the song lyrics of Doo-Wops & Hooligans taken from internet. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design to explain the grammatical metaphor coding. The finding shows that there are six types of ideational metaphor occur in the album, they are: material process, mental process, relational process, verbal process, behavioral process and existential process. The study shows that Material Process is the dominant which presented the action, activity, doing or happening to tell about Bruno Mars’ experiences.     Keywords: Grammatical Metaphor, Linguistics, Descriptive Qualitative Design

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of cohesive devices used in Headline News of The Jakarta Post. The objectives of study are to identify and to derive the types of cohesive devices dominantly used in headline news of the Jakarta Post. The data are taken from headline column of The Jakarta Post from online edition. There are seven articles which are analyzed in this study. This research is conducted by using descriptive method. The findings show that there are 162 references, 4 substitutions, 34 Ellipsis, 349 conjunctions, and 36 lexical cohesion occur in this study. The most dominant type of cohesive devices is conjunction because the writer would like to connect ideas within the text to make its readers easy to understand. Then the writer would like to make their news more informative. Keyword        :  cohesion, cohesive device, The Jakarta Post.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of illocutionary acts used in Naruto’s comic script. The objectives of study were to find out the illocutionary acts, describe the most dominant type of illocutionary acts and elaborate the reason for the illocutionary acts. The data were the dialogue of Naruto to his addressees in comic Naruto. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method and limited on the utterances produced by Naruto to his addresses. The findings show that there are 81 Representatives utterances,28 Expressives,27 Directives, 5 commissives and 1 Declarative. There a son of Representatives most dominantly used is Naruto gave more statements and information about his believes and the facts of the situation in the story. He often represented his believes about what happens to be the case of the conversation with others characters in the story. Abstract

This study is concerned at finding the meanings of Tepak Sirih tradition in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding ceremony. either it is the meaning of offering tepak sirih and the meanings that found in all objects that needed to practice tepak sirih tradition. This study also concerned on how and why the meanings realized in practicing tepak sirih. The research method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative method which is related to the grounded theory where the meanings are elaborated by using Roland Barthes’s Semiology Theory. The interview was assisted by two interviewees who are expert about Tanjungbalai Malay culture and tradition and they are the speakers in every ceremony of Malay in Tanjungbalai. The results showed that offering tepak sirih have different meaning in different event. Merisik, meminang and Hempang pintu are three events that use tepak sirih tradition in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding but only hempang pintu which uses tepak sirih in the wedding ceremony.  The writer found There were 11 dennotative meanings, 7 connotative meanings and two myths in all objects that needed in doing tepak Sirih tradition. The reason Tepak sirih is seen as the tool of communication or the opening speech in Tanjungbalai Malay wedding ceremony lies on the history of Tanjung balai Malay living in the past.Keywords: Semiotic or Semiology, Tepak sirih, Tanjungbalai Malay

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of the study were to describe the types of interpersonal function and the dominant type of interpersonal function used in Mario Teguh’s Facebook Status. This study was in descriptive quantitative method. This study dealt with the analysis of interpersonal function in Mario Teguh’s Facebook status. The data were the statuses of Mario Teguh and Mario Teguh’s Facebook account was used to take the statuses of his. The statuses were analyzed and classified based on the Speech Function and Mood as part of the interpersonal function. There were 200 Speech Function and 196 Moods as part of the interpersonal function in the selected statuses. The findings indicate that both all types of Speech Function and Moods are used in Mario Teguh’s Facebook Status. They were Statement, Question, Command, and Offer for the Speech Function, and Declarative, Interrogative, and Imperative for the Moods. It was found that the most dominant type of Speech Function is Statement (69.5%) and the most dominant type of Moods is Declarative (71%). It was seen that Mario Teguh mostly used Speech Function of Statement and Declarative Moods to share his ideas to the readers. Keywords: Speech Function, Moods.

Abstract

The aims of this research were: (1) to find out the suitable the reading materials for grade eight students of SMP N 1 Kotapinang, (2) to find out how to design English reading materials based on problem based learning which is suitable to the needs of students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was class X students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After , anlyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing the questionnaire to 38 students to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needs English reading materials which cointain English relating to their daily life environment. Thus, developing English reading mateials were descriptive text. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 5,17 from English Lecturer and 4,68 from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade X Students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This research developed Problem Based Learning materials. It covers reading skill and consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement tasks. The input was in the form of written texts, vocabulary list and grammar explanation. The students were encouraged to do discussion and involve in active investigation to solve and do tasks. Most of the tasks are done in a small group discussion and in pairs. Based on the results of materials evaluation, the content, language, presentation and graphic of the developed materials are considered appropriate. Keywords : Research and Development (R & D, Problem Based Learning ,Descriptive Text

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension applying Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) Method by conducting classroom action research. The subjects of this research ten grade students of SMA Santo Antonius Bangun Mulia Medan. The number of the students was 30 students. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, quantitative and qualitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was objective test of reading comprehension, while the instruments for qualitative data were gathered through observation sheet, diary notes and check list. Based on the data analysis, the mean of the students score in pre-test 44, in cycle I was 61.16, and in cycle II was 80.33. The conclusion is that Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Keywords: STAD Method, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text.
