Abstract

Mobilization in urban areas has increased every year along with the population growth and urban's development. Travel behaviors of the population in urban areas can be classified based on their travel characteristics. The identification of communities' travel behavior of Yogyakarta is based on the origin - destination and length of trip based on age characteristics. It will effects the travel patterns in the urban environment through spatial mapping. The method used in this research is critical path method. Critical Path Method (CPM) is used to determine the optimum path taken by the community based on its duration, which in this study CPM is used to determine the average travel of the community based on age groups when viewed from distance, length of trip and the number of daily trips. Based on the analysis, it shows that the average age of 15-22 years and 31-37 years have the highest travel time, which is about 9 hours and the average age of 23-30 years traveled the longest by 12.5 km. The average mobilization of travel behaviors in KPY is to the urbancenter of Yogyakarta. The KPY urban form does not have a compact form.

Abstract

Urban warming indicate that urban would be hotter than rural areas because of the urban heat island. Unfortunately, Tropical urban people are considered to be used to hot temperature. In addition, various research indicate that this condition may affect to thermal discomfort and other problems for human life. Therefore, this research will describe and explain the causes of urban warming in tropical cities and the adaptation mechanism conducted by citizen so that city government can find better solution to adapt with urban warming. To get better overview, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Medan City, Indonesia become the comparison sample. The data derived from previous research result and observation using google earth satellite imagery which are analyzed descriptively and spatially. The result shows that both cities experience urban warming because of the land use and urban morphology. but, regarding with adaptation, Medan City still adapt traditionally like watering the road but in Kuala Lumpur, City government prioritize the negotiation and technological approach.

Abstract

In Indonesia, many cities located along riverbanks are prone to flood disasters. This study seeks to know the people’s perceptions of flood and their strategies to cope with floods in the study area. This study was conducted as a field survey in Tangerang city, a suburban area of Greater Jakarta. A qualitative design using a case study approach was used in this research. The study reveals that floods in a suburban area like Tangerang city can be caused by both natural and human factors. The key findings can be summarized as follows. First, people employ some local-level measures to cope with floods, especially as an effort to minimize the impact. Second, as part of flood management in Tangerang city, integrated flood management should be considered. To maintain sustainable development in a suburban area, it will be crucial to create close public and local community relationships through the strengthening of coordination and social capabilities.

Abstract

The frequency of volcanic disasters in Yogyakarta is quite significant; Mount Merapi material carried by water flows also impacts river silting. Another reality indicates that natural factors are not the only cause, although human activities can trigger disasters. The dense settlements phenomenon with a morphological orientation near river flows leads to new problems. Instead of using the river as a residential front yard, the people still think of the river as a backyard. This paradigm is still found in Pengok Kidul Village, Gondokusuman District, Baciro Village. This dilemma leads to the question of preparedness and how appropriate the environmental conditions are to live in the context of disaster resilience. Empirical observations are considered capable of revealing the actual needs and the theory of settlement morphology by identifying the periodization of settlements to review the extent of changes. The urgency of the research aims to feasibility review of housing and become a guide for the form of densely inhabited settlements on disaster-resilient riverbanks—the research results of ideal settlement morphology strategy, object exploration, and literature study.

Abstract

While many studies on urban compactness measured built-up area (intensity), this study explored population density in forms of gradients. Also, medium and small cities (in this case, municipalities due to having autonomous economies), through inquiring their characteristics in common, could provide early insights for anticipating further growths. Density database was made, combined with cadastral data. Two kinds of urban growth pattern (i.e. concentric and linear) were comprehended to extract gradient patterns from the cities using three indices. Through assigning a time span (2010–2018), the densification rates were also derived. The results indicate that there was a transformation from linear to concentric pattern while populations increased, yet not rare to total sprawling. Besides, there were influences on the compactness states from how the cities are positioned among the others within their local clusters where, on one hand, being too close to large cities would promote sprawling in long term while, on the other hand, being surrounded evenly by other cities is likely advantageous. Nevertheless, the degree of these advantages was not prevailing fairly across the Indonesian regions. Given the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of urban form, these findings are considerable for further planning and studies.
