Abstract

Teaching English in the 21st century means that teachers are responsible for more than just teaching the subject; they are also responsible for guiding and monitoring their students as they develop and apply the 21st century skills. At this stage, both teachers and students must adapt to new technology in order to ensure the highest possible quality of teaching and learning in an offline, online, or blended classroom. The use of educational platforms, e.g. Google Classroom, enables educators to adhere to the standards for 21st-century classroom practices. The purpose of this study is to explore EFL students' perceptions on the use of Google Classroom in blended learning. We used a survey research design with a closed-ended questionnaire. The respondents were 106 EFL students from the English Language Education Department of the State Islamic Institute of Kediri. The findings indicate that the EFL learners mainly perceived positively towards Google Classroom's attributes including its usefulness, convenience of use, ease of learning, and user satisfaction when it is used in blended learning. In summary, this research adds to the body of knowledge regarding the potential of Google Classroom in blended learning.

Abstract

Pesantren possesses a plus value to boost the idea of “go green” through its education system. Forest Watch reveals that Indonesia has lost its 18,91 millions hectare of forest since 2001 till 2014. In other words, Indonesia is on the fifth rank getting away from its big canopies. Based on this matter, some pesantren in Indonesia has taught their students to love their nature by doing real actions. Pondok Pesantren Al-Yasini in Pasuruan, Roudlotut Tholibin in Bojonegoro, Assiddiqiyah 11 in Lampung, Nu War in Bekasi, and Ridho Alloh in Temanggung have been taking an action to plant hundred thousands of trees. These achievements are pronounced through online mass media using the power of language to inspire audiences as campaign. The reciprocal correlation between environment and language is examined through an eco-linguistic study. Here, the change of language used represents the ecological change. Having to do with this issue, this dialectical ecolinguistic analysis is intended to elaborate lingual units standing for certain meanings. Collecting the data through green discourse news texts, this study confirms that dialectical eco-linguistic approach, covering three dimensions of social praxis i.e., ideological, social, and biological dimensions, related with eco-pesantren influences the people involved i.e. its speakers and readers; therefore, their attitude toward the environment is constructive e.g. being eager in planting trees

Abstract

The corona virus that we've been dealing with since December 2019 resulted in unexpected emergency online instruction. Schools and universities were shuttered, face-to-face teaching and learning activities were suspended, and an emergency online teaching policy was implemented. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to identify the strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities of EFL lecturers' implementation of E-learning in EFL online classes during the Covid-19 Pandemic. A questionnaire with open-ended questions was used to collect the data. As a result of E-learning implementation, EFL instructors have become more familiar with CALL, according to the study's findings. Considered to be the drawbacks of the E-learning implementation were an unstable internet connection, a lack of direct interaction between lecturers and students, and the inability of EFL teachers to control their students. In addition, EFL instructors were required to oversee, supervise, and direct the entire assessment procedure. On the other side, English online instruction through E-learning generated chances for EFL lecturers, such as supplying more creative media or making their own instructional video.

Abstract

Recently, it has been reported that the prevalence of autism has increased significantly. One of the characteristics of autism is a language problem, or it is well-known linguistically as a language disorder. This study is conducted to analyze categories of expressive language disorder of autism represented in Miracle Run Movie and contexts affecting them in producing those utterances. This study applies a descriptive qualitative approach using Carroll's framework (1985). As the result of analysis on 75 data, Philip and Steven, as the autistic characters, face all kinds of expressive language disorders covering phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics in various cases. They face phonological language disorder in the case of inappropriate stress, flat and singsong intonation, and expressionless speech. They also face syntactical language disorder in the case of echolalia and semantic language disorder involving their disability in using semantic bias. In addition, they have pragmatic language disorder in the case of fewer complex gestures, politeness strategy, spontaneous remarks, misuse of pronouns, limited repertoire devices to initiate a topic in a conversation, and tendency to use a question to gain a response from a listener. Concerning the context when the autistic characters produce expressive language disorder, there are six types of context affecting their utterances. They have expressive language disorder when they are posing a question to someone, answering a question of others, expressing their ambition, expectation, surprise, and something they dislike. This study is an excellent guide for EFL teachers interested in working with autistic students.
