Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative study were to find out the voices of teachers about total physical response method in teaching speaking skill and describe activities that teachers usually give in teaching speaking skill using total physical response method. Data for this study were collected through a demographic background, interview, and observation. The demographic data were analyzed descriptively. The interviews data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The observation were analyzed descriptively using observation sheet and using video recorded for recorded the process of teaching speaking skill using total physical response method in the classroom. There were five English teachers as participants in interview and there were two English teachers as participants in observation. Based on the research results, there were five major themes emerged from the data related to the voices of teachers about TPR method in teaching speaking skill such as body gesture in teaching speaking skill, difficulties in learning vocabulary, effective method in teaching speaking skill, participation and interaction in teaching speaking skill, and role play in teaching speaking skill. As the suggestion, TPR method is recommended to be applied in teaching speaking and teachers who apply this method were suggested to develop appropriate classroom management.

Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative study were to explore students’ perception toward the implementation of TOEFL test as requirement for graduation by Medical Students at University of Jambi and to find out their readiness toward the test. Data for this study were collected through a demographic background, document analysis, and interview. The demographic data and document analysis were analyzed descriptively. The interviews data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. There were three students and a head of Medical study program as participants in interviews. Based on the research results, there were six major sub themes appeared on the data related to the voices of participants about the implementation of TOEFL test for Medical students such as opinion about TOEFL, TOEFL as requirement for graduation, the impact of TOEFL test, relationship between English and Medical discipline, benefit of English, and self preparation for TOEFL test.

Abstract

Malaysia and Indonesia have many things in common. These two countries are called ‘bangsa serumpun’ or one group nation. In terms of location, the two countries are very close. In terms of language, the two countries are also very close because they can understand each other by using bahasa melayu or Malay language. As a result of this closeness, the literature of the countries also has many similarities. This essay will compare the development of contemporary literature in these two Asian countries. This essay will also describe how the literature of the two countries influenced one another. The main focus is the similarities and the differences between their literature. To make it easy the term used in this essay to describe the two countries is nusantara. Nusantara is derived from Sansekerta’s language that describes the archipelago of Malaysia and Indonesia.
