Abstract

ABSTRACT: Since many years ago, Bangka’s tin had been recognized as one of prior commodities having been known by people outside Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago). Due to its high economic value, this natural resource had invited the other huge power from outside this island, intending to have control over it. In the 19th century, the map of political power in this island changed, along with the strengthening of colonial influence. Their political authority was connected to the maintaining of tin trenches. People were asked to obey the colonial provisions, as undergone by Chinese mining laborers. The difficulty suffered by the people and Bangka Chinese laborers had caused Depati Amir to struggle to resist against the imbalance. The battle was then continued by Depati Amir who tried to fight the colonial power in Bangka. One of the sources of Dutch power was their ability in developing administrative communication. Correspondences and report arrangement became the references to make the next fighting scheme. Later these reports were then used to be the primary references to reveal the activities of Depati Amir, Chinese laborers, and Dutch government in Bangka. This paper is based on the findings of a research some time ago, discussing about the struggle of Depati Amir and Chinese people againts Dutch colonial government in the mid of 19th century. The findings showed that “the archive tells the story”, that is by showing the contents of archives as a material to understand the story of Depati Amir and his cooperation with Chinese people in overthrowing the wall of Dutch colonialism.  KEY WORDS: Depati Amir; Chinese People; Dutch Colonialism; Resistance; Archive Tells the Story.About the Author: Prof. Dr. M. Abstract

Gayo people's role in national history during Dutch colonization is very significant. The exposure of their role will surely uplift the sense of nationalism and patriotism of Gayo people toward Indonesia. Since every region has its own history, it is suggested that: 1) there is a research of the history of Gayo/Linge which later become the regency of Aceh Tengah; 2) the local government should seek to enhance the prestige and dignity of Takengon in the eyes of nation in form of proposing Gayo's pioneer of independence hero; 3) the local people and government should seek, nurture, and maintain the heritages of Gayo ranging from the mythical /legendary to the archaeological objects that were collected in the form of sites and museums.

Pekojan has already emerged as the center of commerce for Arabs and Muslim Indians community since the 16th century. By the eighteenth century, many Arab immigrants from Hadramawt (Southern Yemen) settled here. Its initial landscape can be traced by the theory of the coming of Islam in the Archipelago. One of the theories says that it was driven by international trade by the Arabs, which also carried Islam along with them. The Hadramis went through the naval journey passing the Indian Ocean to the Malaka Strait. They stopped over in Singapore then went on to Batavia, especially Pekojan. This study found Pekojan became a place where Arab culture and ideas were constructed yet negotiated within a local context. There prominent ulamas, merchants, writers, educators, the initiators of independence, the benefactors, and artists socialized under close racial surveillance of the Dutch East Indies government.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to inform two warrior figures from Gayo, Colonel Muhammadin and Aman Nyerang who had not been recorded in the previously published historiography of the Aceh war. It was important regarding the dimension of the Aceh War which did not cover the coastal area, but also penetrated into Gayo and Alas Land.MethodThe researchers conducted several colonial data searches to find the war activities of Colonel Muhammadin and Aman Nyerang. Several annual reports of the colonial government, namely the Koloniaal Verslag and Dutch-language newspapers, were two important sources. The collected sources were then verified through external and internal criticism, until a selected source was found. The available data were then critically read and analyzed to obtain information to answer problems being investigated.Results/FindingsThe study found out that both figures used different war strategies against the colonials. Aman Nyerang was a fighter who liked guerrilla tactics and used close range attacks armed with a dagger or machete. Muhammadin was a warrior figure who adopted modern war strategies, because he had received Japanese military education. He used such strategies in ambushing the enemy, including by placing snipers in histroops.ConclusionColonel Muhammad and Aman Nyerang in the Gayo war had an important role in defending the Aceh region from Dutch rule. Therefore, the roles of both figures need to be recorded in the historiography using social history perspective to provide more comprehensive information for the next generation.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of Tun Sri Lanang in designing the socio-political and religious life and in introducing both the structural and cultural changes in the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom. This article focuses on the period of Sultan Iskandar Muda until Ratu Safiatuddin. In addition to his popularity as adviser of Sultan Iskandar Muda, Tun Sri Lanang was also well-known as a pioneer in spreading Islam in east Aceh especially in Samalanga. Although he had no strong knowledge on Islam, Tun Sri Lanang had a strong interest in the existence of Islam in Aceh. The fact that Aceh in his time was noted as a centre of Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia could not be separated from the role of hulubalang and other kingdom officials who had strong interests in disseminating Islam and developing knowledge.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v19i1.371

Abstract

This article explores the resistance of the Bengkulu people to the Dutch East Indies government in the last XIX century to the beginning of the XX century. It is suspected that the colonial government's interest in building colonies in this country is to control and monopolize the trade of various spices such as pepper, cloves, nutmeg and so on. In addition, they are also interested in mastering the gold mine in Rejang Lebong. Searches of various Dutch archives such as the Koloniaal Verslag were carried out in order to obtain primary sources on this topic. The research method used is to raise the social history of the Bengkulu community, especially regarding the role of community elites such as regional heads, clerics, hajj who have an important contribution in moving the people. The novelty obtained is that information about the war in Bengkulu occurred communally and partially but was quite troublesome for the colonial position there.
