Abstract

The use of the veil in the midst of a pluralistic Indonesian society reaps various views, including stigma, even though a person has the right to have the freedom to show their identity through clothing. This situation makes veiled women not fully accepted so they need to negotiate their identities, including in the realm of education at the university level. This study aims to understand the experiences of veiled women negotiating their identities in the face of stigma and different views regarding the veil during learning. This study uses the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method with in-depth interviews. The results of the study illustrate that the three informants interpret the veil in relation to religious beliefs that form their self-concept and social identity, namely the three informants see themselves as continuing to maintain attitudes and behavior to conform to their veiled identity. Furthermore, the three informants entered a diverse lecture environment and interacted with friends and lecturers during the learning process. In this case, the three informants faced various differences, including differences in views and the stigma of the veil so that the three informants negotiated to communicate their identities. Based on relation and situation factors, several strategies were found in the negotiating process of the three informants, including avoiding, compromising, competing, accommodating, and collaborating. Through various strategies, the three informants were able to communicate their identities so that they were understood and good relations were established.

Abstract

The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on society in various fields, but not for the digital service industry. During the pandemic, all residents are urged by the government to reduce all activities outside home, including work and study purposes. The term Work From Home (WFH) is often mentioned in the news and among the public. During the Work From Home era, the need for digital services such as wi-fi increased. However, IndiHome unfortunately experiences network disruptions for several times within a certain period of time wich provokes negative comments and complaints from consumers on Twitter. This study was conducted with the aim of knowing how much influence the news exposure about IndiHome’s network disruptions and brand image on Twitter had on the level of consumer’s confidence in IndiHome’s services. When the need for internet is increasing rapidly. The theory used in this research is New Media Theory and e-Word of Mouth Theory with a non-probability sampling technique, a sample of 100 people, male and female, aged 16-64 years and have been exposed to the news about IndiHome’s network disruptions during the pandemic. The test for both hypothesis show that there is an influence between news exposure about IndiHome’s network disruption and brand image on Twitter on the level of consumer’s confidence in IndiHome’s services with a significance value of 0,000.

Abstract

Communication between parents and children is important in the family as well as parenting. There is a need for stable economic conditions to support good communication and parenting. However, not all families have stable economic conditions. Many children from pre-prosperous families deviate because of the lack of formal education and understanding of social norms from their parents. However, not all children from pre-prosperous families are like that. Few of them manage to get an education and a good understanding of social norms. This study aims to understand the communication patterns of underprivileged families in formal education parenting patterns and understand children's social norms with qualitative research methods. This research refers to the interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach. The data collection technique used is an in-depth interview. The theories used in this research are Family Communication Pattern Theory, Non-Verbal and Verbal Communication Concepts, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Differential Association Theory. The results of this study indicate that each family has a different pattern of communication. These are laissez-faire, consensual, and pluralistic types. In addition, to strengthen the relationship in the family, parents and children apply such as assurance, positivity, openness, sharing network, and sharing tasks. This study also found that informal education parenting and understanding social norms, parents apply different parenting patterns, including uninvolved, permissive, and authoritative. And based on this care, children can already understand well about formal education and understand social norms taught by their parents
