Abstract

Construction for Solomon's Temple entailed forced labor. This is evinced, first, by several terms connoting forced labor, such as mas, sēbel, and ‘ebed, which are used in the text to describe the Temple project. Widely attested during the reigns of David and Solomon, terms such as these denote just how royal projects were carried out. A second piece of evidence concerns the outbreak of civil unrest during Solomon's day over the issue of forced labor in Israel. As such, the Temple's very construction bears enormous human cost, just as the splendor of that Temple is directly proportionate to the suffering of both denizens and working class. Here the author analyzes the Temple-construction process of Solomon's era, showcasing one example of the “human pyramid” that demands consideration amid a proliferation of interpretative work to be done in the present time.

Abstract

In SETARA's account, cases of intolerance against churches in a decade (2007-2016) reached the highest number compared to other houses of worship, namely 186 cases. Unfortunately, the attitude of the church tends to be passive towards this reality. We see that the issue of intolerance to the church does not seem to be a common problem with churches, especially mainstream Protestant churches. On the other hand, especially in Christian-majority areas, the church is repressive towards religious freedom in its environment. To that end, we will first review the church's attitude towards cases of intolerance towards the church. Next, we will analyze these attitudes with Catherine Keller's postcolonial perspective to criticize and even reconstruct the church's idea of transformative religious freedom amid various cases of intolerance in Indonesia. This can be done by dissecting the four main issues we offer, namely the traditional conflict culture, neglect by the state, the rise of Islam, and the indifference of churches to various cases of intolerance in Indonesia.
