Abstract

This study try to explore the benefits of Facebook in teaching English in an Indonesia college.  The aims of the study are to discuss the kinds of language teaching and learning activities via Facebook, the use of Facebook in facilitating the teaching and learning in English for guidance counselling area. The data draws in descriptive design. The tool of collecting data is interview. The findings indicate that reading, writing and discussion activities can be held via Facebook and all of the participants agreed that Facebook helps them in learning English. The contribution of the study is to enhance a better understanding  to  use  of  Facebook  as  an  alternative  tool  can be  used  for teaching and learning.  The ultimate goal of study is to enhance students ‘interactions outside the classroom. By using Facebook students can get to know sharpen education to its highest level and made it more interesting, therefore creating good learning environments.

Abstract

The use of textbook in the EFL classroom play a very crucial role for both teachers and students as textbook is the main source to learn English. In Indonesia, the use of textbook cannot be denied because it provides a resource, a source of activities, a reference, a syllabus, a great support for inexperienced teachers, and serve as a source for self-directed learning or self-access work (Cunningsworth, 1995). Even though textbook has many advantages, still some theorist believe that textbook has more shortcomings that affects the teaching and learning English. The pros and cons on the use of ELT textbook have lead confusion for the teachers in making decision. This paper has a purpose to meticulously review the advantages and disadvantages on the use of textbook in the ELT, the pros and the cons among the experts, and provide suggestions for the teachers in using the textbook for their teaching and learning.

Abstract

Students are expected to have good comprehension to deal with all reading aspects and difficulties in academic context. Furthermore, as the teacher we should prepare students with learning strategies so that the students can used their learning strategies to improve their reading comprehension which could not be taught optimally in the class. The comprehension process draw on many cognitive and linguistic abilities, especially vocabulary, recalling background knowledge, sentence processing, verbal reasoning, and working memory. Therefore, reading comprehension is an area where cognitive strategies are important. The objectives of this research are to find out the effect of cognitive learning strategies in teaching reading in improving students reading comprehension, and reading difficulties faced by students.This research applied quasi-experimental design by using non-equivalent control group design pre test and post test. The experimental class is students of morning class and the controlled class is students of night class, each class consists of 35 students. Both experimental and controlled classes are given pretest and post test. However, the treatment was only given to the experimental class. The data are collected through pretest, post test and questionnaire and were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0.The research results are: 1. The cognitive learning strategies are effective in improving reading comprehension; 2. The cognitive learning strategies help students to improve their reading comprehension by themselves both inside and outside the classroom, with or without the teacher assistance; 3. the cognitive learning strategies provide students with interesting, challenging, and enjoyable classroom activity. It also contributes to help students to comprehend the material more easily.Keywords: Effectiveness, Cognitive learning strategies, Students’ reading ability

Abstract

Educational institutions carry out several programs that are able to support the development of their students in preparation for becoming a teacher. Pre-service student teaching aboard is one of executable program. Through this international teaching, pre-service teachers got more dynamic experiences. Not to mention, the status of English in the country where they work is a second language. This research show the result regarding the challenges faced by student exchange participants while participating in pre-service teacher programs abroad and the impact of the experience they gained on their self-efficacy as future teacher candidates. there are so many challenges they have to face; starting from participating in the training provided by the faculty where they will be trained in their English language skills and monitored for their behavior for several days; find out about the school system and curriculum taught in the Philippines and then study it; looking for references on socio-cultural life to find out what can and cannot be done; adapting to the new school and living environment; language gap that makes their communication less fluent; different English terms; culture shock such as the striking attitude of some local people, speaking style; the weather is different from the country of origin. As well as the improvements they experienced after doing this program such as their confidence in their self-efficacy as teachers in the future.

Abstract

The objectives of the program were to rise student’s English speech and the students can arrange the speech script. The program conducted at Babusalam boarding school Kabupaten Kapuas.It conducted in three times for giving training to the students. Direct method, demonstration and workshop were used as training method in this workshop. The instructur gave the students materials how to speech English well. After having workshop the students get new motivation in learning it. The training methods were useful to give them trainee although they are basic level . The result indicated most of students interesting to speech practice. They brave to show their speech one by one in front of instructurs.

Abstract

The success of tourism village development is influenced by many factors. The involvement of the community and all the supporting elements in developing the tourism village becomes the main factor. Community empowerment becomes an alternative solution as an effort to develop tourism village. Batakan village located in Panyipatan District, Tanah laut Regency is a tourist destination that an interesting tourism potential named Batakan. It is surrounded by pine forests around it. The most enabling empowerment for Batakan Village teenagers to support the success of a tourism village development is a tour guide. However, the knowledge and skills that the teenagers have in terms of guidance and English for tour guide is very limited, so it is necessary to conduct guidance and English training for tour guides. The methods used in this training were lecture, discussion, question and answer, drilling, and role play. The results achieved from this activity are 1) the understanding of training participants on the guided tourism improve and 2) English- language training for tour guide, simple English expressions have been mastered

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore the undergraduate English students’ emotional experience in terms of anxious and nervous feelings and identify the factors contributing to the anxious and nervous feelings of undergraduate English students in learning to speak English. The design of this research employs qualitative narrative approach, in which the researchers attempts to elicit the participants’ emotional experience in learning speaking at the private university in Banjarmasin. In collecting the data, the researchers use semi-structured interview techniques and are analyzed using thematic inductive approach. From the findings revealed that there were three undergraduate students who experienced dominant negative emotions such as anxiety, nervous and shy during learning to speak English, while another student considered that negative emotions did not influence him too much to speak English. There were two main factors that contributing anxiety and nervousness, namely external factors (such as lack of confidence and the environment) and internal factors (such as lacking mastery of grammar and vocabulary).Keywords: Emotional experinces, learning to speak English, undergraduate students
