Abstract

This research is aimed to find out and analyze the theories used to translate an English novel ‘They Do It with Mirrors’ into Indonesian. The method used here is descriptive qualitative. The procedure of the research were reading both versions of the novel (English and Indonesian), marking the problems, collecting the problems, and analyzing the data focusing on Chesterman’s translation strategies with other supportive theories. This research shows that the most commonly used strategies are cohesion change, unit shift, and transposition. Cohesion change and unit shift can occur from phrase to words or vice versa, but transposition only occurs from word to word. Keywords:  Translation Strategy, Unit Shift, Cohesion Change, Transposition

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas mengenai cerpen Susuk Kekebalan karya Han Gagas dengan teori Orientalisme Edward W. Said. Cerpen tersebut bercerita mengenai kondisi representasi konflik politik 1965. Dalam konfilk itu, relasi superioritas dan inferioritas tersebut merupakan representasi antara dikotomi oposisi biner antara Barat dan Timur. Selain itu, dalam kacamata Barat, Timur sering kali dianalogikan sebagai pihak yang lemah, mistis, antah berantah, dan tidak logis, sedangkan Barat adalah oposisi biner yang sebaliknya. Penelitian ini melihat aspek  superioritas dan inferioritas, yang mistis dan logis, dan melihat korelasinya dengan kondisi historis khususnya dengan aspek kesejarahan di era kolonial. Timur direpresentasikan dalam diri Warok Wulunggeni dan Warok Wirodigdo, yang mistis dan mudah di adu domba. Representasi Barat dalam diri Bapak bersenapan yang cerdas, superior, dan representasi dari kekuasaan. Hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa meskipun Timur dalam kacamata Barat berada dalam posisi lemah dalam hierarki kekuasaan, di sisi lain nilai-nilai Timur seperti setia kawan, jiwa ksatria, dan kemistisan dengan memasang susuk, membuat Timur memiliki nilai dekonstruktif terhadap sudut pandang Barat

Abstract

This research analyzed idiomatic expressions in My Sister’s Keeper movie based on Newmark’s theory. This research aimed to identify the types of translation methods in translating idiomatic expression and the quality of translation based on Nababan’s theory used in translating idiomatic expression found in My Sister’s Keeper movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through documentation because the data were taken from the dialogues of the transcript in My Sister’s Keeper movie. The result of this research showed that there were 109 data which contain types of translation methods applied in idiomatic expressions, which were; word-for-word translation with 14 data (13%), literal translation with 18 data (16%), faithful translation with 9 data (8%), semantic translation with 12 data (11%), adaptation translation with 5 data (5%), free translation with 3 data (3%), idiomatic translation with 29 data (27%), and communicative translation with 19 data (17%). Afterward, the raters indicated the result of the translation quality assessment showed that 12 data were scored less accurate and 4 less acceptable, all in all, other data showed a high-level accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The most frequently types of translation method were idiomatic translation because idiomatic translation more commonly used in idiomatic expression which to distorted nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms.

Abstract

The title of this research is The Comparative Literature Analysis in Suzanne Collins' Novel 'The Hunger Games' and Veronica Roth's Novel 'Divergent'. It compares the two main characters in each novel, Katniss and Tris, using a feminist approach. The purpose of the research is to reveal and to compare the feminist values conducted by the main characters and to examine the similarities and differences in the main character's role in influencing the novel's social conditions in terms of feminism. This study uses descriptive qualitative research. The data source comes from the novels The Hunger Games and Divergent. Based on the writer's analysis, it shows that Katniss and Tris have tough and dominant characters. Both of them also show the activities that engage with the feminist movement. Furthermore, Katniss and Tris are fighting injustice in their social environments, albeit in different ways. Katniss makes soft gestures while Tris does the confrontation.
