Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation strategies, syntactically and semantically, used by the translator from English to Indonesian and the translation quality assessment. Theories by Chesterman, and Nababan et al., along with other theories, were used to discover the answer in the analyzing process. The methods applied are descriptive qualitative and focus group discussion (FGD). The results of the translation strategies shows, the majorly used syntactic strategies is unit shift, whereas the most employed semantic strategies are paraphrase followed by trope change. Translation quality assessment wise, ten data shows less accuracy level and the overall data indicates high accuracy level, high acceptability level, and high readability level. Keywords:  Translation Analysis, Idiomatic Expressions, Novel

The purpose of the research is to figure out how to translate idioms from English into Indonesian. The data were taken from a novel Crazy Rich Asian by Kevin Kwan and its translation into Kaya Tujuh Turunan by Cindy Kristanto. Because the meaning of an idiom cannot be translated from each of its terms, the application of appropriate methodologies to translate idioms affects the idiom translation. Many English idioms have the same meaning as idiomatic expressions, but they are expressed in different ways. Other idioms do not have equivalent idioms, so they were translated using the free translation method.. The method of this study is a descriptive qualitative method research. There were 325 data which were analyzed qualitatively to determine the types of idioms and what semantic strategies were employed. The result shows that paraphrase dominated of all idiom types with 83 data, followed by synonym 73 data, Emphasis change 66 data, abstraction change 62 data and distribution change 41 data. The author conducted research on the relevance of understanding idioms and how to use them more effectively.

This is a very interesting movie that brings the issue of discrimination, oppression, localization, commoditization and also the struggle to get rid of them and to establish women emancipation. The movie succeeded in portraying those social problems. The viewers of the movie could be aware of those issues. Men should be aware that they have to look at women equally. Furthermore, women also have to struggle for their right. Women should be independent. Ruth is the best example of how women should do. We have to fight against anything to establish women emancipation, even we have to fight the laws that are discriminative.

Abstract

This research used the data source "Zootopia" (2016). The researcher analyzed the translation strategies of idiomatic expressions using semantic strategies and syntactic strategies also evaluates the quality of the translation. This study uses the theory of translation strategies by Chesterman and analyzed the quality of translation by translator using the theory of Nababan, Nuraeni & Sumardiono (2012), another theory based on Newmark for supporting theory in this research. This research method used by descriptive qualitative. The dominant data points obtained from this study were from syntactic strategies, namely unit shift with 14 data points and dominant semantics, namely paraphrasing with 16 data points. The results of this research showed that there were 100 data which contain types of translation strategies applied in idiomatic expressions, consits are; syntactic strategies with unit shift 14 data (14%), semantic strategies with paraphrase 16 data (16%), and semantic strategies trope change 5 data (5%). The quality of the translation used by the translator has accumulated data analysis. they are: high accuracy data, high acceptability data, and high readability data.
