Abstract

Artikel inimengkaji proses peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa melalui Picture Strip Story untuk mahasiswa semester pertama Fakultas Sastra Universitas Darma Agung. Berbicara adalah salah satu keterampilan produktif untuk mentransfer apa yang ingin disampaikan kepada pendengar. Penulis menawarkan metode dalam mengajar kelas Bahasa Inggris dengan penggunaan Picture Strip Story yang bertujuan agar para siswa bersemangat untuk mengetahui dan mempraktikkan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dengan lebih mudah dan lebih lancar.Penelitian ini dilakukan secara kuantitatif dengan dua perlakuan kelas berbeda; kelas eksperimen dan kontrol. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik random sampling. Dalam menganalisis data, kajian ini menggunakan T-test formula. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan signifikan dari skor rata-rata yang diperoleh dari kelompok eksperimen (85, 46) dan kelompok kontrol (70, 75). Nilai tobs> ttable (P= 0.05) df (58), or 6.78 > 1.67 (P=0.05). Artinya Ha diterima. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan Picture Strips Story secara signifikan mempengaruhi kemampuan berbicara siswa.

Abstract

Artikel ini menganalisis tentang “Bahasa Kiasan yang digunakan dalam iklan kosmetik di Televisi Indonesia”. Permasalahan dari penelitian ini adalah jenis-jenis bahasa kiasan, jenis Bahasa Kiasan yang paling Dominan dan alasan mengapa Bahasa Kiasan itu digunakan. Skripsi ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dan dengan menerapkan metode penelitian kepustakaan dimana beberapa referensi diambil dari beberapa buku-buku sumber. Jenis Bahasa Kiasan tersebut adalah Personifikasi, Hyperbole, Repetisi, Metaphor, dan Simile. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan 5 Bahasa Kiasan yang ditemukan dalam 37 Iklan Kosmetik. Ada Personifikasi (24,32%), Hiperbola (21,62%), Repetisi (10,81%), Metapor (37,84%), Simile (5,41%). Dan jenis paling Dominan dari lima Bahasa Kiasan adalah Metapor.

Abstract

This thesis is entitled Analysis of Speech Function in Miley Cyrus’s Selected Songs Lyrics: Systemic Functional Linguistic. It discussed about speech function used in Cyrus’s selected songs lyrics. The objectives of the study were to find out; the types of speech function, the most dominant types, and the reasons of the most dominant types. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were taken from 15 (fifteen) new and old songs of Miley Cyrus. This research used Halliday theory (1994) in analyzing how speech function and its types namely; statement, question, offer, and command work in the song lyrics. The data were analyzed by reading, listening, and taking notes. As the result taken, found 4 (four) types of speech function in the song lyrics, they are; Statement for 568 clauses (82%), Command for 74 clauses (10,69%), Question for 45 clauses (6,50%) and the least, Offer for 5 clauses (0,72%). The result of percentage indicates Statement (82%) and Command (10,69%) as the dominant types. The reasons of the dominant types are the composers dominantly using statement and command in intent of expressing the singer’s thoughts and feelings, giving personal/non-personal information and motivating the hearer to do better.

Abstract

This thesis deals with a conflict of an autistic character in Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The problems of the study are, the kinds of conflict, the causes of the conflict, and the impact of conflict on Christopher, as the main character in Mark Haddon’s novel. This thesis applies the qualitative research method. Christoper’s internal conflict is suffering from Asperger Syndrome as an autism spectrum disorder which in turn affects his overall behavior because the autism he suffers limits his actions and thoughts. He uses his normative way of making sense of his surrounding and seeks the mysterious death of the dog whereas Christopher’s external conflict such as man against. man and man against the society. This story emphasizes the different perspective that tells about what the main character gets through compared to people in general. He gets through various trials, gains confidence in his abilities and slowly changes to be more self-sufficient.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out modal auxiliaries found in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, their functions, and the most dominant modal auxilaries found there. This research was conducted by using qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were analyzed by applying some processes, they were: Identifying the data, Collecting the data from the novel, Analyzing and underlining the data related with the kinds and functions of modal auxiliaries. There are four modals that were analyzed based on their functions. Modal can can be used to show ability, possibility, permission and polite question. The function of possibility is dominantly used in Oliver Twist novel (40,96%). It is expected that the students of English Literature Department should have mastered the rules of the forms and functions of modal auxiliaries in writing their literary works because their literary works will be used by the language learners in their study, so they need to get the accepted materials, for example in this case, novel text.

Abstract

In this study, the researcher analyzes taboo language phenomenon in a comic entitled My ID Is Gangnam Beauty especially on the kinds of taboo language used uttered by the characters with good academic background. The objectives of this research are to identify and describe the types of taboo language uttered by the characters of Maenggi Ki’s My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, to find out the most dominant types of taboo language of taboo language uttered by the characters in Maenggi Ki’s My ID Is Gangnam Beauty and to find out the reasons for the most dominant type of taboo language uttered by the characters in Maenggi Ki’s My Id Is Gangnam Beauty. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method based on Batistella (2005) theory and Wardhaugh (2006) theory. The technique of analyzing data are: classifying, analyzing, discussing and reporting. Based on the result on the analysis, there are four types of taboo language that found in My Id Is Gangnam Beauty: Ephitet, Obscenity, Profanity, and Vulgarity. The most dominant type is Ephitets type which are found one hundred six (106) times out of 84 episodes. There are 4 the functions that can be reasons of most dominant taboo language is occur that found in My ID Is Gangnam Beauty: To Draw Attention to Oneself, To Show Contempt, To be Provoke, To Mock Authority out of 84 episodes.
