Abstract

Language assessment should support the learning process. Therefore, studying the washback of the assessment process is important to evaluate whether the assessment supports the learning process. English for tourism students is part of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Therefore, the appropriate assessment should be authentic since the need of their English is to perform their English based on their future professional setting. In Tourism 4.0 Era, tourism is not only dealing with welcoming guests, guiding, or arranging an itinerary but also broadcasting using internet media. One of the efforts to prepare the students with those demands is conducting the broadcast project-based assessment. This research aims at identifying its washback in the students’ learning. In-depth interview was employed as the data collection method. The results show that motivation and learning improvement were the washback of broadcast project-based assessment on learning.

Abstract

English as international language becomes the bridge between the guests and the host intourism activities. As the consequence, Indonesia as the country that popular with its tourism potentialshould prepare its human resource to support the tourism activity for its betterment. One of them ispreparing them with English Macro-skill. English macro-skills consist of 4 skills: Reading, Listening,Writing, and Speaking. This research is aiming at analyzing the needs of English Macro-skills for theTourism Students of Higher Education. Empirical data in this research were collected throughquestionnaire. The questionnaire was spread trough 100 tourism students of Ambarrukmo TourismInstitute Yogyakarta whose experience in doing internship period. The result found that one skill isabove important than the others, some found that all of them are important, or they should be taughtintegrated. As the findings show, based on the students’ internship experience and the students’perspective, those 4 English macro-skills are important but they have different frequency of use in thework place. Reading is the most frequently use since they often deal with short functional text, such asannouncements and notice. Then it was followed by listening, writing, and speaking.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang kontekstual untuk situasi darurat kesehatan. Metode studi literatur digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan komunikasi spesifik selama krisis kesehatan, menganalisis literatur terkait, dan merancang materi pembelajaran berbasis temuan literatur. Materi yang dikembangkan kemudian divalidasi oleh ahli bahasa Inggris, ahli kesehatan, dan ahli pendidikan. Uji coba dilakukan dengan kelompok target untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas materi. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa materi pembelajaran ini berhasil meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris dalam konteks darurat kesehatan.
