Abstract

The research was conducted aiming to an analysis of students’ ability in writing descriptive texts at the ninth grade of SMPIT Sabbihisma Padang. The method used in this research is the qualitative method. The subjects of this study were the 32 students of the IX-1 class. The research investigated the descriptive writing text which had been done by the ninth-grade students of SMPIT Sabbihisma Padang. The researcher analyzed the students’ writing results referring to the five aspects. They were organization ideas, developed ideas, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. After analyzing the texts written by the student, the researcher categorizes them into four categories, namely excellent, good, fair, and poor. The result is 1 student or 3, 13%, there are 6 students or 18, 75%, there are 3 students or 9, 37%, and there are 22 students or 68, 75%. The average students’ capability in writing descriptive text is poor. The problems faced are (1) the students have problems with the limited number of vocabulary, (2) developing the idea in a descriptive text, (3) grammar mastery. Grammar mastery is the most problem faced by the students. The causes of the problem are (1) students’ low motivation, (2) Understanding.

Abstract

Sebagian besar mahasiswa masih memandang bahasa Inggris sangat sulit untuk dipelajari. Selain itu mahasiswa tidak percaya diri dan takut melakukan kesalahan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis kemampuan siswa berbicara bahasa Inggris setelah menggunakan metode dubbing dan media video pembelajaran. Model penelitian eksperimen yang digunakan adalah one group of pre-test and post-test eksperimental design. Metode pengumpulan data eksperimen terdiri dari observasi, wawancara, dan perekaman. Analisis data melalui pengelompokan dan perbandingan berdasarkan kategori; kategori tidak puas (AS), kategori cukup (F), kategori baik (G), kategori sangat baik (V), dan kategori sangat baik (E). Hasil penelitian berdasarkan pre-test masuk dalam kategori US = 7 siswa, F = 21 siswa, G = 13 siswa, VG = 3 siswa dan E = 0, tidak ditemukan hasil dan post test hasil belajar siswa US = 0, tidak ditemukan hasil, F = 6 siswa, G = 20 siswa, VG = 17 siswa dan E = 1 siswa. Kemudian efek positif dari penggunaan metode dubbing hasil adalah kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris meningkat lebih tinggi, mengacu pada hasil pre-test kategori kemampuan siswa ditemukan dalam kategori US dan tidak ditemukan kategori yang sama pada hasil post-test, siswa ' kategori kemampuan tidak ada hasil yang ditemukan dalam kategori E dan kategori AS. Jadi metode dubbing bekerja secara efektif dalam proses pengajaran untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa.

Abstract

Generallyelementary school students tend to like learning activities with different actions and movements and like the use of visual media. Another problem that is often found in elementary school students is having a very short attention span (short attention span), so they are usually easily bored with learning activities after 7-10 minutes. The tendency of using conventional and monotonous methods given by the school to children, apparently still does not motivate students to study English regularly. Therefore, it is necessary to have innovative and creative actions to minimize the anxiety felt by the school, as well as knowing the talents and learning interests of elementary school students in the English language needs which can be applied in daily activities.

Abstract

The study aims to improve English speaking skills with vocabulary mastery through charade game techniques. This research uses library research methods. The biggest problem of today's students lies in mastery of the vocabulary itself. Therefore, teaching staff are required to be able to continue to create ways or techniques of learning in the classroom that can lead students to master english vocabulary more. This game indirectly helps to improve the vocabulary of students. In this game words will be demonstrated with gestures so that students are able to express words with movement. This technique also helps students to be more active in the classroom and motivates students due to the presence of competence in the game. Charade games also help students understand reading texts because vocabulary is difficult to understand first.

Abstract

This sudy aims at investigating the effect of OK5R (Overview, Key Ideas, Read, Record, Recite, Review and Reflect) activities through Cooperative Learning (Learning Together) on teaching reading of report text viewed from reading interest. This research was a quasi-experimental research by using 2x2 factorial designs.Reading interest was the moderator variable. Population of this research was XI grade students of SMAN 1 RantauKopar. Sample choosed by using cluster random sampling technique: XI IPA was the experimental class and XI IPS 1 was the control one. The instrumentation was questionnanire of reading interest and test of report texts reading.The data analyzed by using t-test and ANAVA for hypothesis testing. The result showed whether: (1) OK5R activities through learning together produced better result on students’ reading comprehension than three-phase strategy; (2) students with high reading interest who are taught by OK5R activities through Cooperative Learning produced better result in reading than those who are taught by Three Phase strategy; (3) students with low reading interest who are taught by OK5R activities through Cooperative Learning produced better result in reading than those who are taught by Three Phase strategy; and (4) there is no interaction between both strategies (OK5R activities through Cooperative Learning and Three Phase strategy) and reading interest toward reading comprehension.OK5R activities through Cooperative Learning was an effective strategy in teaching reading of report texts at senior high school. Students who have high and average reading interest improves their reading comprehension with this strategy. Future research is encoraged exploring the application of this strategy in another kinds of texts as larger population and sample. It was implied that variation strategy used in teaching reading comprehension is important

Abstract

This research investigated interference of using reciprocal method in improving students’reading comprehension at grade XI of vocational high school. A total of 42 studentsidentified with diagnostic reading participated. The sample was divided into two groups;experimental(n= 21 girls)and control (n=21girls). T-test was employed for data analysis.Findings from this study indicated the effectiveness of reciprocal method interference inimproving reading comprehension in the target students. On the basis of the findings,the study aimed for theeffectiveness of reciprocal method inimproving students’ readingcomprehension.Keywords : Interference of reciprocal method, reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study examined students’ cognitive and social reading strategies in Economic and Business Department of UPI YPTK Padang. A total of 156 students in three classes were surveyed regarding their reading strategies. The method used in this research was descriptive correlation method. 15 students were taken as samples by using random sampling technique. The results found that there were high statistically significant correlation among the three classes. These findings were discussed in regards to whether correlation in reading strategies could potentially influence learning outcomes and effectiveness of teaching reading

Abstract

Getting valuable information when write papers, paraphrase is an useful process. This research was conducted with aims to find out the students skill in paraphrasing, the problems faced and the causes of the problems in paraphrasing. There were 16 participants in this study. The data were collected from paraphrasing test, interview and questionnaire. The finding of the data analysis showed 62.5% of the students‟ ability in paraphrasing qualified in unsatisfactory level. From the test, it was found that the students made mistake in changing the order of ideas, lack of understanding toward the criteria of a good paraphrasing and changing word as their problem in paraphrasing. Last, lack of vocabulary and understanding about paraphrasing included as the causes of the students’ problems in paraphrasing.

Abstract

This research is conducted to know the use of English in promoting fashion in social media. In social media, there are many people who promoting their fashion to sell. They sometimes use English to promote in order to attract readers’ attention to buy. The aim of the research is to know how the meaning and word order of the English used in promoting fashion. This research is descriptive research. The data of the research are taken from instagram. The results of the research shows that the English used in promoting fashion is not correct and does not follow the correct word order and grammar.
