Abstract

Dealing with millennial generations, it is essential that educators adjust the educational paradigm in order to adapt to the needs of students in the digital age as it is today. This research studied about the implementation of flipped classroom learning model in Language Teaching Media (LTM) to foster fifth semester students’ learning autonomy in English Teacher Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University. Through the implementation of flipped classroom using Learning Management System (LMS), it is expected to model innovative teaching strategies, such as flipped classrooms, in an effort to prepare preservice teachers for 21st century education. Findings from this research indicated positive perception towards flipped classroom in fostering learning autonomy in terms of planning, classroom engagement and self-evaluation.

Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis alih kode yang ditemukan di komunitas mailing list (milis)pencari beasiswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menjawab pertanyaan: faktor sosial apa sajakahyang mempengaruhi penggunaan alih kode yang terjadi di komunikasi virtual tersebut? Penelitiandeskriptif kualitatif ini mengkaji 31 surat elektronik pada grup milis beasiswa http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beasiswa/. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa alih kode terjadi karenadipengaruhi empat faktor. Pertama, topik tentang beasiswa memegang peranan penting dalammendorong terjadinya fenomena bahasa ini.Dalam beberapa konteks, alih kode terjadi karenapenggunaan Bahasa Inggris lebih tepat untuk menjelaskan istilah-istilah yang berkaitan denganbeasiswa. Kedua, latar belakang pendidikan para anggota milis memungkinkan mereka menggunakanmulti bahasa dan mengalihkan Bahasa Indonesia ke Bahasa Inggris untuk berkomunikasi satu samalain. Ketiga, adanya solidaritas virtual diantara partisipan juga berkontribusi pada terjadinyafenomena ini.Gaya bahasa yang digunakan diantara anggota milis adalah gaya bahasa kasualkarenasuasana pembicaraan tidak formal maka mereka dapat secara leluasa menggunakan alihbahasa. Keempat, fungsi percakapan di dalam milis, yaitu untuk memberikan informasi danmemotivasi para anggota, juga mendorong penggunaan alih kode . Studi ini memaparkan informasimengenai cara orang berinteraksi dan berkomunikasi melalui email satu sama lain.

Abstract

In the era of information technology, electronic media are broadcasted throughout the world by farreachingmultinational companies. In that way, various forms of entertainment have becomeinseparable from childrens daily lives. Due to their extensive presence, media may have considerableinfluence over childrens development and behaviour. Naturally, media are expected to provide notonly creative entertainments but also positive didactic messages for child viewers, including thoseunder five (5) years old. Early age education practitioners can make use of the movies to introducethe child viewers to certain values such as relevant gender sensitive messages. Frozen (2013) is amovie which depicts female independent characters that do not pursue romance as their only lifegoal; instead, they prefer to stay together and keep their mutual love as sisters after a long journeyfull of adventures.In this preliminary study, the visual and narrative elements of the movie are studiedin order to analyze the gender sensitive messages wrapped in entertaining styles. To some extent,themessages can also enhancefive different developmental domains of childrennamely social, physical,intellectual, creativity, and emotion development (in short, S.P.I.C.E.).Thus, watching the movie canbring benefits to child and adult viewers from the viewpoints of entertainment, education, and childdevelopment.

Abstract

Quality online programs often demonstrate significant teaching presence, social presence, cognitive presence, learner presence with the help of technology use. This study investigates online learning experience based on the Revised Community of Inquiry (RCoI) framework in a writing course. The goal of this study is to explore how asynchronous and synchronous activities in an LMS can be utilized to create higher levels of cognitive presence in the online environment. Learning experience of one writing course consisting 28 students were assessed through questionnaire & FGD. Hopefully, the result of this study will contribute to the more accessible, convenient, and effective online learning in the future.

Abstract

This research aims at investigatingthe implementation of flipped classroom in CALLclass and how it can improve students’ learning autonomy. This research is a case study. The data gathering techniques used in this study were interviews, observations, and questionnaire and it employed descriptive analysis technique. The result showed that the flipped classroom in CALL class was divided into two main category, namely inside and outside class activities. The study also revealed that flipped classroom promoted students’ learning autonomy in six aspects, namely helping the students determine their learning objectives, define the content and progression, select the methods and techniques to be used, monitor the procedure of their learning strategy, evaluate what they had acquired, and prepare themselves to become teachers.

Abstract

Writing skill becomes one of the most important skills because it communicates students’ ideas and perception in written form. However, based on researcher’s observation, writing activity is not always successfully studied among the students because its complexity and challenges can be daunting for students. Writing should be learned with appropriate learning strategy. One of the techniques is called Think Pair Share (TPS) learning strategy was applied to improve students’ writing skills in class. According to Engkos Kosasih (2014), “Success in learning the materials is not only calculated by individual's ability but also working together in group” (p. 101). The goal of this study is to answer two research questions: (1) Does TPS improve the student’s writing skill in class XI IPS of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta? (2) What are the students’ responses toward TPS in improving their writing skill in class XI IPS of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta? The result of this study revealed that TPS learning strategy did improve their writing skills because it triggered positive changes in their learning attitude. They were encouraged to be more active, critical, and creative.

Abstract

This study aims to explore whether there is a significant improvement in preservice teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) after implementing hybrid presentation and teaching simulation as one of the tasks in the Teaching Methods and Conventional Media course. This study also reports students’ responses to the implementation of the hybrid presentation and teaching simulation. In this quantitative study, preservice teachers’ knowledge was measured using a TPACK scale prior to and subsequent to the hybrid class implementation period. Twenty-one students studying in the fourth semester of an English education department in a private university in Indonesia participated in this study. A paired-samples t-test result suggested a significant improvement in students’ scores from the pre- to the post- TPACK self-assessment (t = -8.210, p < .05). The findings of this study suggest that hybrid presentation can be an effective strategy to help foster preservice teachers’ TPACK skill while developing speaking and other skills.

Abstract

Melcosh Café dan Glamcamp yang telah tujuh tahun berdiri di Kawasan Wisata Kaliurang, Yogyakarta semakin memperluas pasarnya. Kini, bisnis café tersebut telah merambah ke pasar internasional, di mana jumlah kunjungan dari customer mancanegara semakin bertambah dan konsisten. Untuk dapat melayani customer mancanegara, para karyawan di Melcosh Café & Glamcamp perlu memiliki kemampuan komunikasi bahasa Inggris aktif. Untuk membantu menjawab kebutuhan tersebut, tim pengabdi dari prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sanata Dharma menyelenggarakan pelatihan komunikasi bahasa Inggris aktif dengan metode role play bagi karyawan Melcosh Café dan Glamcamp. Dengan modul yang dikembangkan secara khusus untuk konteks bisnis resto dan hospitality industry, kegiatan pelatihan yang berbasis role play dilaksanakan dalam kurun waktu satu bulan dengan jumlah total delapan pertemuan. Setelah menjalani pelatihan intensif selama satu bulan, keempat belas orang peserta pelatihan yang terdiri dari barista, waiter, cook, customer service, dan staf operasional dapat meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dari level pasif menjadi aktif, khususnya dalam konteks melayani dan menangani kebutuhan pelanggan mancanegara di café dan glamcamp. Hasil akhir pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan metode role play terbukti telah memberikan dampak positif bagi perkembangan kompetensi berbahasa Inggris para karyawan Melcosh Café & Glamcamp yang merupakan salah satu faktor penunjang pengembangan bisnis perusahaan.
