Abstract

The pre-service teachers undertaking a teaching practice program (PPL – Program Pengalaman Lapangan) are demanded to implement the Scientific Approach, the underlying teaching practices in the 2013 curriculum (K13), in the schools where they conduct their teaching practice. The recent study aims to examine pre-service teachers’ problems in implementing Scientific Approach during a teaching practice program as reflected in their reflective journal entries. Also, this study seeks to find out how the reflective journal can help them improve their capability in implementing Scientific Approach when teaching English. The participants of this research were four pre-service teachers doing a teaching practice program in SMAN 8 Yogyakarta. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected from participants’ reflective journal entries. From the study, it was found that participants encountered problems in implementing Scientific Approach in terms of maintaining student-centeredness in the teaching and learning process, engaging students’ participation, maintaining students’ focus, and applying the five learning stages based on Scientific Approach. Further, it was discovered that the reflective practice can help improve the pre-service teachers’ skills in implementing Scientific Approach in their English teaching practices.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030203

Abstract

L2 learners’ morpheme acquisition has been studied a lot subsequent to Dulay and Burt’s work (1974). Similar to other studies responding to Krashen’s (1977) notion on natural acquisition order, this small-scale research aims at investigating whether Indonesian high school English learners also go through similar acquisition order as the respective notion. The data taken from a group of Indonesian high school students’ writing assignment were analyzed using the Obligatory Occasion Analysis (Ellis & Barkhuzien, 2005) to investigate the grammatical morpheme acquisition order of the students. Subsequently, the finding was analyzed to see whether the acquisition order was influenced by Krashen’s hypothesis. The findings showed that the morpheme acquisition order of the research participants did not go through similar acquisition order as stated in Krashen’s natural order hypothesis. Further, the participants’ L1 partially contributed to the order.

Abstract

Listening is an essential skill from which learners can acquire a vast amount of language input. Pre-service English teachers need to have excellent listening skills as they are demanded to develop meaning through various listening activities to prepare themselves to be qualified EFL teachers. A video-assisted Extensive Listening (EL) program was administered to facilitate pre-service EFL teachers to improve their listening skills. Using a quasi-experimental design, this research aimed to see whether there was a significant difference between the listening skill of pre-service teachers who received a video-assisted EL program for one semester and those who received regular instructions. Fifty-two pre-service teachers taking the Intermediate Listening course participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to two classes, namely the control group and the experimental group respectively. The quantitative data were collected from both groups' post-test results.  An independent sample t-test that was performed to compare the post-test scores of both groups showed a non-significant result (t = 0.757, p >.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the difference in scores between the experimental and the control group was not significant. This adventitious empirical result might have resulted from the swift change to emergency online learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

English oral communication proficiency is one of the absolute needs of adult learners in entering the digital industrialization era 4.0, where opportunities and competitions are more massive. Several limitations that are implemented as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic have made it difficult for most adult learners to practice their English communication skill intensively. This community service program aims to provide adult learners with the opportunities to practice English speaking skill through an interactive webinar and online group discussions. The Society Speaking Club was conducted in four meetings with the topics of mental health, diversity, environment, and entrepreneurship. The topics were selected so as to allow participants to relate the discussions to their life more easily, as well as to be more aware about the recent issues. This community service program has benefited the participants in a way that they became more confident and fluent in communicating their ideas effectively. In addition, the participants admitted that they got new insights on the issues being discussed, and they were called into actions for maintaining mental health, promoting and respecting diversity, preserving the environment, and developing entrepreneurial skills.

Abstract

Abstract

Peer assessment is a fundamental activity aiming to involve students to participate actively in their own learning processes. In the context of EFL online learning, the peer assessment was conducted in the online mode as well. This study aimed to: 1) compare students’ attitudes in doing an online peer assessment in two different conditions of anonymity, 2) explore students’ perceptions of the anonymous and identifiable online peer assessment.  Seventy students of the English language education department in a private university participated in this study. Assigned to two different conditions, i.e anonymous and identifiable online peer assessment, the students were engaged in a Workshop activity, which was an asynchronous Moodle-based online peer assessment. Each student assessed three peers’ works as well as provide feedback comments. A questionnaire with close-ended and open-ended questions was used to investigate the students’ attitudes as well as perceptions of the different peer assessment formats. An independent samples t-test was performed to compare the attitude scores of both groups. The result indicated that students in the anonymous group showed a slightly better attitude compared to those in the identifiable group, yet the difference was not significant (t = 1.164, p > .05). From the questionnaire result, it was also found that the students in the anonymous group had more positive perceptions towards online peer assessment activity. These findings imply that while the anonymous online peer assessment is more favoured by learners, it might not be able to guarantee positive development in students’ overall aspects of attitudes.
