Abstract

This paper focuses on the depictions of the mad woman figure in two novels, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. Using comparative literature, both texts are seen in the light of woman’s resistance as depicted by the characters “Bertha Mason” and “Antoinette Cosway” from Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea, respectively. The novels used in this descriptive study are the primary texts. The findings show how Wide Sargasso Sea shows woman’s resistance when being compared to Jane Eyre, giving the mad woman character a voice on her own and showing an attempt to free herself from the forms of domination she experiences.

Abstract

Up until today, most people living in East Kalimantan still have a little knowledge and understanding about their folktales. This might be caused by the limited availability of the stories everywhere, including on the internet. This paper aims to report on the availability of online-based East Kalimantan folktales by searching on the web, utilizing the most commonly used search engines in Indonesia. The search found that only 17 folktales are available worldwide, and most of these texts and non-texts materials have yet to exist in decent or official forms. This calls for a quick action of preservation in order not to let these cultural assets to extinct in the middle of the threat from the vast growing internet and mainstream entertainment.

Abstract

Poetry is a form of literature that is not only in the form of beautiful words, but also has a deeper meaning for the poet himself (the poet). Poetry becomes an expression of the contents of the heart that describes the poet's life and experiences. Through a qualitative method with a semiotic approach, this study tries to reveal the poet's life by determining the syntagmatic and paradigmatic of the Poetry "Capungku" by Zawawi Imron. The results of this study can be seen from the side of happiness that goes hand in hand with jealousy in the poet's social life. One side of the poet has a desire to be happy, but sometimes this contrasts with the other side which has jealousy and the social environment which often has an influence on the poet himself. This is a problem in human life whoever it is. Both are mirrors of a human life that will always be contradictory.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of indigenous knowledge into children’s literature as a means of promoting disaster resilience among young readers. Through the lens of ecocriticism and descriptive qualitative research methodology, the study investigates the portrayal of smong, a form of indigenous knowledge from the Simeulue region of Indonesia, in two selected Literacy Cloud short stories: “Tsunami” by Yovita Siswanti and “Smong, the Dragon” by Maya Lestari. The analysis reveals how these stories effectively incorporate smong as a repository of local wisdom and resilience lessons in the face of natural disasters. Encouraging initiatives to incorporate more themes of indigenous knowledge into children's literature is crucial for promoting cultural preservation. In addition, integrating indigenous knowledge—particularly those with content related to disaster resilience—is valuable to empower children in disaster-prone areas. Overall, the study highlights the potential of children’s literature and digital platforms for education in fostering a harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world amidst the challenges of environmental sustainability and possibilities of natural disasters.
