Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of the implementation of Problem-based Learning with brainwriting method based on food diversification problem toward students’ critical thinking and communication skills. This was a quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design, which involved two classes of 10th-grade student that selected by cluster random sampling, in a public high school at Bantul regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. One class was managed as the experimental group, and another one was as the control group. The data of critical thinking skill were collected using an essay test instrument which analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, while communication skill data were collected through an observation protocol and analyzed descriptively. The findings of this research revealed that the Problem-based Learning instruction with brainwriting method was significantly more effective in developing students’ critical thinking and communication skills, as Mann-Whitney U test supported this result (p=0.00) as well as the descriptive analysis of the average scores of the skills. With this significance, Problem-based learning with the brainwriting method can be used as an example of a model and enrich the learning model implemented by teachers. These results are further discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Study on e-learning implementation has been growing as a great interest particularly in biology education research and practice. Whilst a number of research has shown various modes of e-learning, however, there is still a lack of understanding on how e-learning can be applied for health literacy orientation in biology instruction. This research aimed to develop a conceptual framework of SSI-based e-learning in biology to promote student health literacy. This research was conducted in narrative inquiry design. Nine people including five biology teachers, two experts in health education and two science teachers who are practitioners in e-learning implementation were voluntarily participated in this research. Data of this research are experiences, knowledge, or perspectives that were expressed by participants and were collected through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis approach was employed to analyse the data in three stages with trustworthiness and authenticity were applied for quality standard. Research findings show that there are three main aspects that need to be considered in developing an intended framework. These are: 1) e-learning platform could be used, 2) SSI-based learning pathways arranged in e-learning mode, and 3) additional e-learning elements need to be provided. Hence, these three aspects play essential roles in underpinning the framework of SSI-based e-learning in biology to promote student health literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a development product that is feasible and effective to use for science learning in schools. The product developed is an e-encyclopedia of mangrove ecosystems. This study uses the Research and Development (RD) model developed by Borg Gall. The subjects of the limited trial consisted of 15 students of class VII. In comparison, the field trial consisted of 52 students from VII-G and VII-E of SMP IT Abu Bakar Yogyakarta. The data collection instruments included interviews, field observations, information literacy evaluation questions, and student environmental care attitude questionnaires. The field trial design used a pretest-posttest control group design. The results showed that: (1) the developed mangrove ecosystem e-encyclopedia is very suitable for use in science learning; (2) the e-encyclopedia of mangrove ecosystems is effective for improving students' information literacy skills and environmental care attitudes. Abstract

The use of prohibited food additives such as formalin is still often found, especially in the school environment. In fact, based on the 2012 Minister of Health Regulation No. 033, formalin is prohibited as a food additive. This phenomenon requires people to be quite observant in choosing food tools. In addition, many people think that the formalin content test can only be done through the laboratory, the formalin test can also be done by a simple reagent containing anthocyanin on dragon fruit skin. So, the researchers designed a simple STEAM-based media with a natural formaldehyde-detecting ingredient, namely red dragon fruit peel extract. This design is divided into two parts, namely the design of simple steam-based media and the manufacture of natural dragon fruit peel extract to detect the content of formaldehyde additives in food. The design was carried out by Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 6 Jember. The final tool produced is a detector marker.

Abstract

Berpikir reflektif termasuk salah satu kemampuan yang perlu dikembangkan dalam pembelajaran biologi abad ke-21. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajaran berbasis socio-scientific issue terhadap kemampuan berpikir reflektif peserta didik pada materi sistem ekskresi dalam konteks isu cukai minuman berpemanis. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen semu dengan nonequivalent control group design. Sampel penelitian ini adalah peserta didik kelas XI salah satu SMA Negeri di wilayah kota Yogyakarta, Provinsi DIY yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol secara cluster random sampling. Instrumen pengumpulan data berupa angket yang dimodifikasi dari Reflective Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ) yang dikembangkan oleh Kember. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan kemampuan berpikir reflektif antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol dengan nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) > 0,05. Namun pada kelompok eksperimen memberi pengaruh yang besar pada semua level berpikir reflektif dengan nilai effect size 0,311; 0,456 dan 0,320 kecuali pada level understanding dengan nilai effect size 0,074. Kelompok kontrol berpengaruh kecil pada semua level berpikir reflektif dengan nilai effect size 0,012; 0,086 dan 0,089 kecuali pada critical reflective yang berpengaruh sedang dengan nilai effect size 0,218.  Melalui penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis SSI berpengaruh lebih baik dibandingkan pembelajaran discovery learning terhadap perubahan atau peningkatan kemampuan berpikir reflektif pada semua level kecuali level understanding.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to find out students' learning experiences on environmental change topic and teachers' views about the potential utilization of food waste issue for the topic. This was a descriptive research that carried out using case study method. The data were collected using questionnaire as well as interviews and analysed descriptively. The results showed that although students have had good learning experience on the topic, however, the issue of food waste has not been discussed, and  this finding is in align with teachers’ view. Despite of the issue had not been applied as the main context for the environmental change topic, nevertheless, the teachers strongly suggested that the food waste issue potentially useful to be implemented for the topic. Considerations of the implementation are further discussed in this paper.
