Abstract

The preliminary study showed that the students at English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in the vocational higher education context found the speaking skills as the most difficult ones to learn. The students also declared that unsupportive English learning atmosphere in the class used to make the students reluctant to speak. This phenomenon also leads the students to have lack of confidence to speak English in the class. Thus, the researcher conducted experimental research using Peer Scaffolding approach using Vygotsky’s theory to check whether it improves the students’ speaking skills. The research involves 156 vocational college students in the second semester of Multimedia Study Program at Politeknik Negeri Media Kreatif Jakarta. After analyzing the data taking from the assessments, interviews, and observation field notes during the study; the findings confirm that the peer scaffolding enhances the speaking skill performances. As the results expose that the peer scaffolding builds the more supportive learning conditions in which the students can give mutual help to improve the speaking exposures, the peer scaffolding is recommended as one of the alternatives to improve the students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

The reading process, especially in reading English texts, is a matter of extracting information from the text and a knowledge-sharing dialogue activity between readers and writers. Students admit that it is not easy to distinguish different texts that they must understand. In many cases, students often have difficulty understanding the content of the text and the context due to a lack of vocabulary and grammar. The lecturer then tried to apply several reading strategies to overcome these problems. One of them is by using the scaffolding method to help students. Then, the emergence of technology and digital sources increases the challenges of addressing the problems. Therefore, this study involved 139 students of the Multimedia Engineering Technology Study Program at the State Polytechnic of Creative Media, where the text used is mainly digital. After applying the scaffolding method, this research method uses a qualitative descriptive method describing the impact of changes on students' digital reading skills. The study carried out six types of scaffolding at three reading steps using the scaffolding method to improve students' digital text reading skills, especially students of the Multimedia Engineering Technology Study Program, which mainly use the digital text. The study results show that study result scaffolding techniques highly contribute to enhance students’ reading skills. By applying the scaffolding technique, students are able to overcome the difficulties experienced by students and get scores above the passing grade, in an average of 85, which is 20 points higher before applying such scaffolding methods in the reading activity. In addition to this, most students showed positive responses to the increasing skills and comprehension of reading the digital text through the application of the scaffolding method.

Abstract

The study uses the theory of scaffolding and ZPD (Vygotsky, 1978) as the guidelines to explain in what ways scaffolding can help the teacher to improve the EFL students’academic writing. To make it easier, the author formulates the scaffolding-based activity namely MMPIPE. It stands for Motivating, Modelling, Peer Brainstorming, Independent Writing, Peer Feedback, and Evaluation which are elaborated within theories of sociocultural framework. The model of MMPIPE scaffolding was used at the one-week Intensive Classes for IELTS Writing in Jakarta, Indonesia. The classes were for the EFL learners aged varied between 18 up to 28 years old coming from various backgrounds who want to continue studying at English speaking countries. The past results of applying the MMPIPE scaffolding writing have shown that the learners achieve the optimal Zone Proximal Development by successfully gaining the increased score band between 0.5 and 1.5 band scale. However, the MMPIPE model also has some limitations in ways that it may lead to the different results if the activity uses the different material sources. Furthermore, due to some considerations, it is only applicable to intermediate up to advanced level.
