Abstract

This study is intended to find out and analyze on the Balinese swearwords that often used by the English private course students in Buleleng in their daily conversation. Due to the problems discussed, the theories suggested in this research include language definition, sociolinguistics and swearwords definition. The method applied in this research is descriptive qualitative in nature and the data are from the English private course students in Buleleng. The subjects of this research are five English course students that originally came from Buleleng and they also lived in Buleleng. Then, the data analysis is performed to search the kinds of swearwords that they used, the reason of Buleleng people using the swearwords and also how often they speak the swearwords. This study use the swearwords classification according to types of swearwords which stated by Hughes (1998). This study finds the swearwords at several term included word related to religious (pirata), word related to sex (naskleng), word from excrement (tai and bangkaan), word from name of animal (cicing and bojog), and word from mental illness (lengeh,and buduh). Altough those words are dirty or rude to be said, but it often used by the Buleleng people even from the children until the adult. It will still like that for the next many years, because that is their culture herritage from many years ago.

Abstract

As an international language, English plays an important role as a means of communication. English as a tool and as an opportunity to support the future development. Therefore, English as a crucial subject in almost all education levels. One of term that concern with this condition is English for Spesific Purposes (ESP). This research aimed at developing an ESP learning material for students of Midwifery. This study used Research and Development combine the design by R & D design by Dick and Carey model (2005) and Borg and Gall (2003). The result showed that the learning English could be classified as English for Specific Purpose (ESP). English for Specific Purpose (ESP) is in line with the curricular objectives, which is modelled in terms of standard competency, basic competency and learning indicators. Following the competencies and learning indicators. Therefore, the detailed learning materials would be described in terms of (1) language function, (2) language features, and (3) text structures. Moreover, the result of questionnaire showed the students’ positive responses toward the learning materials. The learning materials were also proven effectively improve students’ speaking abilities after the implementation of the learning materials. The developed learning materials is good for English learning for students of Midwifery because it accomodates the needs of the students in their students teaching and learning process of ESP lesson. Abstract

This study is focused on the capacities of pragmatics in ESL teaching and limited to three essential discussions; first, the investigation of teaching pragmatics relevancy stated on pragmatics elements, second, the presentation of the effective ways in teaching pragmatics by applying SURE steps (Brock and Nagaska, 2005), and the elaboration of pragmatics effects towards ESL learners. It is necessary to conduct a research of pragmatics capacities in ESL teaching. Due to the problems discussed, the theories suggested in this research include pragmatics definition, pragmatic competence, pragmatic elements and SURE method. Then, the method applied in this research is descriptive qualitative in nature and the data are from the 3rd semester of STKIP Agama Hindu Singaraja students. The data analysis is performed to investigate the relevancy of pragmatics in ESL teaching, the pragmatics teaching methods, and the effect of pragmatics towards ESL learners. This study finds pragmatics is a relevant point to be taught in the language classroom due to language is an arbitrary. Through SURE methods, students are expected to comprehend the language used in contexts. Pragmatics affects the ESL learners to be sensitive about the surroundings, other cultural interactions, also how they must behave towards circumstances as ESL learners. Abstrak Penelitian ini difokuskan pada kapasitas pragmatik dalam pengajaran ESL dan dibatasi pada tiga diskusi esensial; pertama, investigasi relevansi pengajaran pragmatik yang tertuang pada unsur-unsur pragmatik, kedua, penyajian cara efektif dalam pembelajaran pragmatik dengan menerapkan metode SURE (Brock dan Nagaska, 2005), dan penjabaran efek pragmatik terhadap peserta didik ESL. Untuk itu perlu dilakukan penelitian tentang kapasitas pragmatik dalam pengajaran ESL. Berdasarkan permasalahan yang dibahas, maka teori yang disarankan dalam penelitian ini meliputi pengertian pragmatik, kompetensi pragmatis, unsur pragmatis dan metode SURE. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan data dari mahasiswa-mahasiswa STKIP Agama Hindu Singaraja semester 3. Analisis data dilakukan untuk mengetahui relevansi pragmatik dalam pembelajaran ESL, metode pembelajaran pragmatik, dan pengaruh pragmatik terhadap peserta didik ESL. Studi ini menemukan bahwa pragmatik adalah poin yang relevan untuk diajarkan di kelas bahasa karena bahasa bersifat sewenang-wenang. Melalui metode SURE, mahasiswa diharapkan memahami bahasa yang digunakan dalam konteks. Pragmatik mempengaruhi mahasiswa ESL untuk peka terhadap lingkungan sekitar, interaksi budaya lainnya, juga bagaimana mereka harus berperilaku terhadap keadaan sebagai peserta didik ESL.

Abstract

Generally, problems in self-confidence are experienced by everyone, especially in communication. This study aims to determine the factors of students’ confidence in communicating by using English, especially at SMK NEGERI 3 Singaraja, in the class X DKV 3. This study was designed by using a qualitative descriptive research method. The research subjects were students of SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja, especially in class X DKV 3 using observation instruments for all students and interviews for 20 students. The results of this study indicate that students need to study English more actively, had a dictionary, took an English course and had someone to talk to during practice. In addition, students' perceptions also said that the support of friends and the environment greatly influenced their self-confidence and the relationship between confidence and communication was very closely because when students could communicate by using English well and fluently, then their self-confidence developed and be better.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using Movie learning media on students’ speaking skills. The research design used in this study was Post-Test Only Control Group Design. The population in this study was the tenth-grade students of SMK TI BALI GLOBAL SINGARAJA with the sample of 25 students collected by using Cluster Random Sampling. Fifteen students of X PPLG class were assigned as the experimental group taught by using Movie learning media, and ten students of X TJKT class as the control group taught without using Movie learning media. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics analysis and inferential statistics analysis. The result showed that, in control group, the students’ mean score is 79.96, the standard deviation is 3.409, the maximum score is 86 the minimum score is 76. In experiment group, the students’ mean score is 85.12, the standard deviation is 3.479, the maximum score is 90, the minimum score is 79. The outcomes demonstrated that Movie learning media is statistically very significant and quite effective in student speaking skills. This study found that the use of Movie learning media is effective in teaching speaking. Therefore, teachers are advised to use this media when speaking so that students can easily learn and also have more opportunities to practice and develop their speaking skills.
