Abstract

This study describes the relationship of between Manggarai language and Manggarai culture, as reflected in the culturalconceptualisation of Manggarai people on the origin of life that includes the origin of human beings, food plants, and animals. The study isviewed from the perspective of cultural linguistics. The study is descriptive. The results of study show that there is a close relationship betweenManggarai language and Manggarai culture, as reflected in the cultural conceptualisation of Manggarai people on the origin of life that includesthe origin of human beings, food plants, and animals.

Abstract

This case study is about the teaching of writing in an Indonesian state primary school, that is, in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province. It aims at finding out: 1) how writing in Indonesian is taught in the research school; 2) how competent the students are in writing in Indonesian as the results of their teachers’ teaching of writing in Indonesian; 3) proper teaching teachniques done in order to better the athmosphere of the teaching and learning of writing in the research school. The method used was a case study with the school as a research object and the teachers teaching Indonesian writing in the school and their students from grade I to grade VI learning to write in Indonesian as reseach subjects. This study was done from July to November 2017. The data collected through interviews, observations, and documentary studies were analyzed descriptively. It was found that the teaching and learning of writing in the school was traditionally done, that is, it was not to improve students’ writing in Indonesian, but to improve other skills like reading, speaking, and listening. Despite such a traditional method in the teaching and learning of writing in Indonesian, it was found that the students could write generally well in Indonesian. The teachers in the school believe that they need to do some changes in order to ensure that their students can write well in Indonesian like: “joining more courses/trainings on the teaching and learning of writing for publication;” continuing their formal study/degree; providing more teaching facilities so that it is much easier for them to teach writing, to revise, to edit, and to publish their students’ writings; and, working hand in hand with fellow teachers to improve their students’ writing competence.

Abstract

Abstract It is usual for non-native EFL teachers to use code switching and or code mixing as a medium of instruction due to a number of factors such as inadequate oral ability of the teachers, complexity level of teaching topics, curriculum and poor basic English of the students. However it is unusual if the teachers of great oral ability maximize if not always use code switching for most of the time during instruction. The present article tries to explain the code switching and or code mixing performed by the EFL teachers in senior high schools spreading over the West Timor land, the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur and the factor of “individual preferences” as their reason why teachers of great oral ability favor to use code switching and or code mixing during classroom instruction like those of lower or inadequate oral ability of English. The data recorded and presented in this article prove that the teachers use code switching in four types that might be similar or different from those in other places in Indonesia. Abstrak: Sudah sangat biasa guru-guru bahasa Inggris yang bukan “native speakers” menggunakan alih kode (code switching) dan atau cmpur kode (code mixing) sebagai medium pembelajaran bahasa Inggris karena berbagai factor, di antaranya kemampuan oral guru, tingkat kompleksitas materi ajar, pemahaman terhadap kurikulum, dan rendahnya pengetahuan dasar bahasa Inggris siswa. Namun sangat tidak lasim kalau guru-guru yang berkemampuan oralnya di atas rata-rata kalau tidak sempurna, selalu menggunakan alih kode atau campur kode selama proses pembelajaran di kelas. Artikel ini mencoba mengulas alih kode dan atau campur kode sebagai medium mengajarkan bahasa Inggris para guru SMA sedaratan Timor Barat propinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur serta factor “individual preference” sebagai dasar keputusan untuk menggunakan alih kode dan atau campur kode tersebut. Berdasarkan data dapat diidentifikasi serta diklasifikasi ke dalam empat jenis alih kode dan atau camput kode yang bukan tidak mungking berdbeada dari guru-guru lain di luar NTT.
