Abstract

This study is intended to analyze the Ecosophy of Syair Ikan Terubuk using a critical ecolinguistic approach. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. In collecting data, researchers used the documentation method. The data of this research are lexicons, phrases, and verses containing the ecosophy of environmental preservation, especially the aquatic environment, which is sourced from Syair Ikan Terubuk. The results showed that the lingual units in Syair Ikan Terubuk has positive values and encourage people to love, care for and preserve their environment (ecosophy values). This Syair Ikan Terubuk presents 60 types of fish in the Bengkalis sea and in Puyu-Puyu Lake with their respective characters. Although this poem is a symbolic poem about human behavior, but it has a very strong connection with the environment. It is proven that in the past a large number of fish mentioned in the previous poem existed and became a source of sustenance for the Bengkalis community, but nowadays it is very difficult to find them, even most of them are no longer found. At least by analyzing these verses, the current generation and so on will not make matters worse. The ecosophy values of the Malay ancestors in caring for and living side by side with their natural surroundings are clearly stated in this Syair Ikan Terubuk.

Abstract

The Translation as a Profession (TAP) course, offered in a translation study program at a state university in Sumatra, Indonesia, is designed to prepare its future graduates to become not only translation scholars but also professional translators and entrepreneurs in the translation field. Therefore, it requires a well-organized program and carefully selected learning materials. Previous studies regarding TAP course development have yet to explore how learning materials would prepare students to be professional translators. Thus, this study aims to explore further how the TAP materials help student translators become professional translators. This descriptive study used both primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews with eight translation scholars and seven professional translators. The secondary data were documents. The questionnaire data were analyzed with a Likert scale; meanwhile, the interview and document with an interactive model. The results revealed five topics that systematically helped student translators to become professional translators. The topics are helpful because they provide students with skills (theoretical, practical, technological skills) needed in current professional translation practices. In addition, the topics also emphasize practical works in the form of translation internships that can be conducted in several small-scale translation businesses available in the local area.

Abstract

The essential role of translation in intercultural communication leads to the inclusion of translation as one of the courses in universities worldwide, including Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Indonesia. However, little research has been conducted on the development of instructional translation materials. This study aimed to determine the need for digital instructional materials for the Translation Theory course administered in USU’s English Literature Study Program. The need analysis in this research was conducted using a survey method. The participants were the seventh-semester students who had taken the courses on translation, the translation lecturers, and the professional translators. The data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. These instruments were developed based on the document analysis of the previous instructional materials used by the lecturers in teaching the Translation Theory course. The data were analyzed and interpreted using a 4-Point Likert Scale. The results indicated that the instructional materials for a Translation Theory course need to include clear objectives and approaches, topics guiding them to translation theory mastery, and exercises that cover both translation theory and practice. In addition, the results indicate that the participants need the material resources and exercises in a digital form. Although this study was conducted in the context of USU, the findings may be applied as the basis for developing translation courses in other universities in Indonesia, and other countries that treat English as a Foreign Language in their education systems.

Many studies have been conducted to examine the approaches, methods, and media that work best in improving the students’ speaking ability. One of the methods that can be used in teaching speaking is making a video project. This paper aims to find out how using a video project enhances the students’ speaking ability. This study was conducted using a descriptive method, taking the students at senior high schools in Medan as the participants. The data were collected using an observation method. The data were analyzed to show how a video project was used in teaching speaking and how it enhances the students’ speaking ability. The results indicate that using a video project in teaching speaking motivates the students to show their best speaking performance, eliminates their shyness and inhibition in speaking, and improves the students’ speaking fluency in English. Thus, the results recommend the use of a video project as a good method in teaching speaking English to senior high school students.

Abstract

The context of the study is the ongoing protests and demonstrations by women in many places in Iran. This study aims to examine the demonstration of gender ideology and power in Sahebjam's Stoning of Soraya M. Qualitative descriptive method is used to investigate the relationship between gender ideology and power relations and how it creates a power imbalance between men and women in Iranian society. Stoning of Soraya M by Freidoune Sahebjam, published on September 12, 1990, serves as the primary data source for this study. Data are analysed through the lens of the Critical Discourse Analysis approach, specifically Lazar's Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (2007). The findings of the study suggest that the country's laws, including the Constitution, the Civil Code, and the Criminal Code, create a complicated legal environment for women. While the Constitution guarantees equal civil rights for men and women, religious law supersedes other laws and is frequently abused by individuals to commit crimes against women. This study reveals how gender ideology and power relations to women reflected through discourse can demonstrate how women are treated in different parts of the world. Keywords: gender ideology, power, novel, feminist
