Abstract

One of the cities in Indonesia that has problems with school dropout children due to economic problems is Surakarta City. By 2015, 1.54% of workers in this city are teenagers and as many as 6.08% of the population are unemployed (Ermawati, 2015). In fact, the world has become more open and the competition both in the field of economy and employment becomes increasingly tight. One solution to solve the problem is with non formal education. Non-formal education serves as a substitute or additional education that can increase both academic and life skills. Another problem that arises is how to improve motivation and stimuli in processing learning for those who drop out of school. This can be achieved by applying the concept of environmental psychology to the design of educational facilities. By using the concept of environmental psychology, the learning activities can run effectively and learners become more creative and innovative. Non formal education system provided at this education center are life skills training, pursuing equalization packages and tutoring. Each of these activities has its own support rooms such as theory classrooms, practice spaces, library, studio and auditorium which each room apply the concept of environmental psychology in its design.

This journal was done in the interest of architectural studies. The goal of the research was to build a Japanese Community Center in Solo. The study began from a certain phenomenon. Ever since the signing of Peace Treaty between Indonesia and Japan, both country had immersed themselves in various cultural exchanges. This leads to the increase of Japanese culture lovers in Indonesia almost every year. The Japan Community Centre will be a place for Japanese Communities’s activities, a medium for learning Japanese culture, and the new spot of historical vacation for Solo City. Metaphorical Architecture was chosen as the design approach with consideration that through Metaphorical Architecture, the character and purpose of the building can be better presented for the public. The Metaphorical Architecture used was the mix of Abstract Metaphor (intangible) and Concrete Metaphor (tangible). The main problem of this designing process is what will be metaphored through this Japan Community Centre. The exploration starts from chosing the name for the building, which is Mugen Jou (Infinity Castle). Abstract

The condition of special school for the deaf and the deaf itself are still apprehensive, especially in Bekasi, West Java. Meanwhile, deaf persons still need to get an education which equivalent to the education that normal children get. However, education for children with special needs, especially those with hearing impairment, requires special implementations based on deaf’s characteristics in some design aspects in order to improve physical and psychological comfort required by deaf students so they can be more comfortable adapting to school circumstances. Design method that seems appropriate to be applied to this special school for the deaf is psychological architecture approach that focuses on the characteristics of the deaf itself. Psychological architecture as design method that used in this special school is adjusted to the characteristics of hearing impaired in order to improve the quality of physical and psychological comfort of deaf students in the learning process and activities by applying the principles of psychological architecture on site analysis, school layout arrangement, and also the appearance of interior and exterior of special school for the deaf.
