Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types of speech errors and the influencing factors of speech errors towards Khan's character that had Asperger’s Syndrome. The data of the research itself were the words, phrases and sentences uttered by an Asperger’s Syndrome and contained speech errors in the English language. The data analysis was done by using Miles and Huberman analysis stages which is data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification. The results of the research showed the types of speech errors uttered by an Asperger’s Syndrome based on Clark & Clark’s theory found are silent pause, filled pause, repeats, false start (retraced), stutter and interjections. There are no types of speech errors; false start (unretraced), corrections and slip of tongue. It is because people with Asperger syndrome had a lack of cohesion to conversation and repetitive patterns of speech as their speech characteristic. Meanwhile false start (unretraced) and corrections contain an explicit “I mean”, “or rather”, “that is” and without repeating the word in their utterances. The influencing factors of speech errors towards Asperger’s Syndrome are cognitive difficulty and social factors (situational anxiety and social circumstances). Keywords: Speech Error, Asperger’s Syndrome, Influential Factors

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses about personality of a character named Teresa in a novel entitled The Death Cure by James Dashner by using one of Sigmund Freud's personality theory of id, ego, superego. The researcher uses a qualitative methodology and a psychological approach in this thesis. Furthermore, the theory of factors influencing human personality by Abraham Lahey is also applied to this thesis. The result of this study indicates that the representation of Teresa's personality is grouped into two phases based on the plot of this novel. In the first phase, Teresa has id and ego, however, she does not have the superego. Her id is very strong. Therefore, Teresa’s personality is dominated by the id which makes her ego neglected due to the absence of superego. In the second phase, Teresa has the three of personality structures (id, ego, superego) and those work each other. Moreover, Teresa's personality which is grouped into two phases, the first phase is before memory restoration, and the second phase is after memory restoration, is influenced by external factors or it is known as nurture. Nurture influences Teresa's personality in both phases by identifying at the physical environment and the social environment that is around and experienced by Teresa.

Every language varies and has its own characteristics. The varieties can be seen in terms of age, gender, region, social class, ethnicity, etc. One of the characteristics of a language is its grammatical features. An example of language variety that is affected by ethnic group is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). This research aimed to analyze the grammatical features of AAVE through Oscar’s utterances in Shark Tale film and the variables that influence his AAVE utterances by using Wolfram and Rickford & Rickford’s Theory. Out of four AAVE grammatical features, the researcher found that Oscar produced three of them which are verb phrase, negation, and nominal. Question formation feature is not found in Oscar’s utterances. AAVE grammatical features that appeared in Oscar’s utterances are copula/auxiliary absence, habitual be, double modals, subject-verb-agreement, ain’t, multiple negation, plural noun suffix–s deletion, and y’all. Those grammatical features are influenced by his lower working-class status, his male gender, his young age, and his mood which the AAVE utterances produced whether he was comfortable or uncomfortable with the audiences or with the topic.
