Abstract

Young learners can be defined as children in age ranging from five or six years old who are attending elementary school to twelve years old.  In this research the researcher chose to teach vocabulary in TK (kindergarten) Aisyiyah Dolopo. The reason for choosing to teach vocabulary is because vocabulary is one of the important elements in language. The researcher focuses on teaching vocabulary words to the young learners. The researcher used pop up slide book to improve students’ vocabulary. The pop up slide book is a book which shows three dimensional pictures when the pull or trigger is pulled. The name pop up slide book is originated from the term “Slide” which means “to move smoothly along a surface”. The name slide was added by the researcher as the new variant of pop up book. The method for this research was Classroom Action Research which took two cycles. This research method was conducted to know the problems inside the classroom thus the solution can be found. The goal of this research is to make children learn English through pop up slide book. The instruments used in this research were observation, interview and test. The research results based on the implementation of popup animal slide media in TK Aisyiyah Dolopo Madiun showed that in cycle 1 up to cycle 2 the implementation of pop up slide book was able to improve students’ score. In the first cycle many students achieved score 70 and in the second observation their score were above 80. The highest score was 100 for the test in cycle 2. The interview result showed that 100% of the students liked the pop up slide book with the animal poster. In the first interview cycle, 87% of students were afraid to learn English but in the second interview cycle, 100% of students could speak English comfortably without hesitation. Moreover from the observation in first cycle only 46% students who were excited to learn with pop up book, but in the second cycle 90% of students were excited to learn English during lesson using pop up slide book. It means that pop up Slide Book as teaching media could successfully improve students’ vocabulary. Keywords: Kindergarten, Pop Up Slide Book, Vocabulary

Abstract

This research aims to describe the difficulties faced by teachers in managing a large class and the teacher strategies in managing a large class. This research is a qualitative descriptive research with the subject one of the English teachers of SMA N 1 Badegan and students of Class XI MIPA 1- XI MIPA 4 as participants. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews and questionnaire. The results showed that in teaching and learning English in a large class, there were found three main challenges that must be faced by the teacher, namely the difficulty in giving attention to each individual in the class, heterogeneous student abilities and the difference of student background knowledge. The strategies used by the teacher to solve the problems in managing large classes include division of heterogeneous groups, small-group strategies, peer tutoring, visual imagery, and translation strategies. The application of classroom management skills includes asking skills, explaining skills, variation skills, and teaching a group and individual skills.

Abstract

This study was  porpused to know how picture series method can improve students’ speaking skill ability at the second grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Jetis Ponorogo in academic year 2016/2017. This study used classroom action research and implemented picture series as the media in teaching speaking. This technique applied to the students in second grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Jetis Ponorogo in acedemic year 2016/2017 that consist of 18 students. This research conducted on February  22nd  2017- June  15th  2017. The steps of the strategy began from the students observed some pictures that showed by the teacher, devided the class into groups, then, each groups got picture to describe, the last the students presented the picture orally one by one. After the researcher conducted the research, the result of the test showed that the mean of students’ score  in the first cycle was 64.88 and the mean of students score in test II was 78. The result of questionnaire of the first cycle was 85% and the second cycle was 87%. Furthermore, the result of observation checklist in second cycle was 85%  showed that the students active in speaking activity in classroom. The data that was obtained in each cycle explained that the students’ score in  speaking were increase. Finally, The researcher gives sugestion to the teacher that picture series considered as interesting media, so it can as an alternative media to teach speaking skill and the researcher hopes this research result can use as the  refference for the next researcher.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out: (1) the difficulties that faced by Visually Impaired Students (2) the learning style that used by Visually Impaired Students (3) the learning strategiess that used by Visually Impaired Students. The type of research is descriptive qualitative research in the form of case study.. There are three visually impaired students, teacher, orphanage caregiver involved in this research. In this research, the researcher used observation, questionnaire and interview for instrument. Further the data analysis used Miles and Huberman model with the steps as following: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result shows that the difficulties appeared because there were in inclusive class. Almost of them felt difficult when the learning process was seeing the media such as presentation or watching a visual picture or videos. To overcome it they had different strategies.. The researcher classified that One students had memory strategies, compensation strategies and social strategies. One student used affective strategies. One student used metacognitive strategies. Based on the learning style, the most of visually impaired students were auditory learners. It can seen from all of Visually Impaired Students said that it more easier when listening to the teachers but if they didn’t understand they wrote the material first on the notebook. So, the Visually Impaired Student easier to understand the material that given by the teacher through listening. Visually Impaired Student at Charitable Institution ‘AisyiyahPonorogo didn’t have visual learning style because they were totally blind.

Abstract

Writing is an important language skill because it becomes a means of learning, discovering, developing, and perfecting skills of language. The researcher using the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method to improve student writing ability.  The aim was to change the classroom situation, so that the students will more interested in learning processes, and it will be easier for them to understand the material especially in writing class. The researcher used classroom action research as the research design. The subject was the eleventh grade MIPA 1 SMA N 1 Nawangan on 2019/2020 lesson year. The class consists of 24 students. Before implementing the research, the researcher made lessons plan,  scenario teaching using STAD and prepared instruments, questionnaire, observation, and test. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The first and second meetings was the implementation STAD method and the third was the test. Based on the result of the observation it showed that the students were more active than previous meeting, the percentage was 67% in cycle one and 88% in cycle two. The result of the questionnaire score was 68.4% in cycle one and 74.2% in cycle two it meant the students were more enjoyed, gave positive response and looked more fun with implementation those method. The result of writing test in cycle one it was known that 14 students or 58% who got score above 70, in cycle two was 100% or all students got score above 70. The result of writing test in cycle two, it showed improvement. The research finding proves that STAD method was successfully in improve writing ability. The researcher suggest that using STAD method in writing skill is a good alternative to teach and learn writing in order to make the learning process become more effective and independent

Abstract

The aims of this research were identify: 1) The types of code switching, 2) Find out the factors influence the teachers to switch English into Indonesian or the opposite, 3) Analyze the impact of teacher’s code switching for the students. This research was held on SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The research design was qualitative research especially case study. Research used observation and interview as the data collection technique in this research. To analyze the data the writer transcribing interviewing, scanning material, typing up field notes, coding process, making qualitative narrative, and making interpretation the data. Based on finding, the types of code switching which was used by English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo include tag code switching, inter sentential code switching, and intra sentential code switching with different quantities. The factor influence teachers to conducted switch English to Indonesian such as the students understanding was the big factor and the students characteristic were different, they had not same ability in English. Finally, the researcher proposed suggestion to the teachers to maintain using code switching during teaching and learning English in classroom, but continue to prioritize English as the primary. They could switch Bahasa Indonesia, but when used for certain purposes only.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain how the Problem-Based Learning Method improved the reading comprehension of XI MIPA 5 students at the SMAN 1 Badegan and to indentify what aspects of reading learning can be improved. The researcher used classroom action research. This research had 2 cycles consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In this research, the researcher used 3 instruments: observations, questionnaires, and tests to measure student achievement and to know student responses after implementation of Problem-Based Learning in reading comprehension. The result of the study showed that students reading comprehension was improved. This was proven by the result of test which improved from 7% in cycle 1 to 100% in cycle 2. Then, the the result of the questionnaires which improved from 78% in cycle 1 to 98% in cycle 2. Furthermore, this study was also proven by the result of observation which improved from 65% in cycle 1 to 95% in cycle 2. Based on finding data from 3 instruments, the researcher concluded that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning method was successful to improve students’ reading comprehension at X MIPA 5 SMA Negeri 1 Badegan in academic year 2021/2022.
