Abstract

Background: Statistic showed an increasing number of overweight incidences among children in Aceh Province. However, relationship between breastfeeding and risk of overweight and obesity is still controversial due to strong confounding factors. Hence, the relationship between breastfeeding and obesity is unclear. To reduce the confounding factors, siblings analysis can be undertaken as children live in the same environment. Objective: To investigate the influence of siblings overweight status on breastfeeding duration and overweight incidence among adolescents and to explore other environmental and genetic factors related to overweight incidence in adolescents.Method: This was an observational-analytical study with a matched case control design. There were 50 subjects for each group. Subjects in the case group were taken from existing cases, while the control group was selected by purposive sampling by matching in age and gender. Paired t test, McNemar test and conditional logistic regression were performed to analyse the data. Results: Overweight adolescents have shorter breastfeeding duration than non-overweight adolescents. Multiple conditional logistic regression tests on overweight status in siblings showed that breastfeeding duration could reduce overweight incidence among adolescents (OR=0.81; 95%CI:0.69-0.96).Conclusion: Overweight adolescents have shorter duration of breastfeeding than those who were not overweight. Factors that affect the risk of overweight among adolescents in this study were mother’s education, adolescent’s eating behavior, mother’s overweight status and sibling’s overweight status.

Abstract

Background: Eradication of poverty and starvation is still an agenda of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015 due to the serious impact of poverty and starvation to human beings. Poverty and starvation are worsened by smoking habit of the Indonesian population. Expenditures used for cigarettes may bring bad impact to the health of toddlers, including lack of nutrient intake. However, until today it is not yet precisely known how much lack of nutrient intake in toddlers caused by cigarette consumption. Objective: To identify difference in nutrient intake of energy and protein of toddlers based on the amount of cigarettes consumed in poor household at Yogyakarta Municipality.Method: The study used cross sectional design. Subject consisted of 86 toddlers of two-five years living in poor household at Yogyakarta Municipality. Cigarette consumption, mother of toddlers and all members of the family were obtained from interview. Method to assess intake was multiple 24 hours food recall within four days, whereas interview was used to assess cigarette consumption. Statistical analysis was performed by using Two Sample Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, regression, and Chi-Square.Results: As much as 77.9% of poor household had at least one smoker. There was no significant difference in intake of energy and protein of toddlers living with smokers and non smokers, though percentage of expenditure for food was significantly lower in the household with smokers. This might be due to high consumption of food with high energy density at affordable price and protein at low price. Snacks were the third most consumed by toddlers and 40% of animal protein consumed were eggs. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in intake of energy and protein of toddlers living in the poor household with smokers and those living with non smokers, but percentage of expenditure for food significantly lower in household with smokers.

Abstract

Background: Obesity in school children is the problem of world epidemics of which its prevalence increases sharply. Food marketing through television is presumed to be one of the causing factors. Objective: To find out whether exposure to food and beverage ads through television influenced food choice and intake in children and whether its effect varied in different nutrition status.Method: The study was an experiment involving 2 experiment groups. The first group was exposed to film with food and beverage ads; the second with ads excluding foods and beverages. The children were given 8 advertised foods and drinks and 4 natural foods. The assessment was then made on energy intake and food choice. The population of the study was elementary school children at Yogyakarta Municipality and samples were selected through multi-stage random sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively and through correlation analysis. Results: Children exposed to food and beverage television ads had higher energy intake (262.7±99.7 kcal) from those on ads than children not exposed to ads (233.7±103.3 kcal), and chose more from those on ads (4.7±1.7) than children not exposed to ads (4.2±1.7). Children with normal nutrition status were influenced more by food and beverage television ads than children with over nourished and undernourished nutrition status. Conclusion: Exposure to food and beverage television ads influenced food choice and energy intake in children.

Abstract

Background: The issue of child nutrition is still a problem in developing countries, including Indonesia. Nowadays, there is double burden related to child nutrition, due to lack of nutrition that has not been resolved and at the same time, there is an increasing problem of excess nutrients. Parents are responsible for the care of children, including fulfilling a balanced nutritional intake. Objective: To identify the relationship between parent’s behavior in feeding and nutritional status of children aged 2-5 years.Method: Design used in this study was observational with the cross-sectional study was conducted 153 parents with children aged 2-5 years who fit the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the region of Integrated Health Center Catholic Hospital St. Vincentius a Paulo Surabaya. Parent’s behavior in feeding was assessed using the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ) which consists of 49 questions and 12 behavioral aspects. The nutritional status of children assessed by weight indicator according to height (weight/height) were compared with z-score WHO 2006 standard. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation. Results: The average nutritional status of children aged 2-5 years based on the weight/height z-score indicator was 0.17 indicating that is in normal condition. Parent’s behavior that involves children in the planning and preparation of meals, positively associated with nutritional status of children in all conditions of nutritional status of children who are very thin to obese (ρ=0.43; p=0.001). Pressure, when children eat, was negatively associated with nutritional status of children aged 2-5 years in normal nutritional status to obese (ρ=-0.34; p=0.001). Restriction of food intake to control body weight was positively associated with nutritional status of children aged 2-5 years in all conditions of nutritional status of children who are very thin to obese (ρ=0.29; p=0.001).Conclusion: Parent’s behavior in feeding the children associated with nutritional status of children aged 2-5 years.
