Abstract

The teaching of English in Indonesia has been started from elementary school until university level because students are expected to have good knowledge of English as the international language. In order to compete with people all over the world, English learners should be able to use English both in written and spoken form. The teaching of English in SMAINUS has been conducted in a fun way supported by the innovative teacher and interactive technique. Consequently, students have positive perceptions toward English and are more motivated to improve their English. However, there is no any English club, especially on English Conversation Club (ECC) that can facilitate students to do speaking practice outside the class to improve their productive skill rapidly. Therefore, this program is the starting point of ECC in SMAINUS. This paper aims at exploiting students’ perceptions of ECC program to create English environment.

Abstract

Directorate General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia issued a decree named SK Dirjen Number 43 regarding the implementation of the personality development course in higher education. The vision of teaching those courses, including teaching Indonesian language, is to provide source of values and guidelines in the development and implementation of study programs to lead students to establish their personality as Indonesian people. The study brings comprehensions about students acceptance of teaching the course and be useful for study programs that offers ELE. The programs can use the findings as a reference how they have to design their curriculum to meet students needs as well as in line with the government regulations. this study applied a phenomenology under the qualitative approach. Based on the result of the data analysis to capture students of English Language Education (ELE) perceive the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia course at the university level, the researchers put into two major themes. The first theme is students positive perceptions Bahasa Indonesia course, while the last is students negative perception towards similar course.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to reveal students’ listening comprehension difficulties and strategies to overcome the listening comprehension problems by high achievers. The strategies were necessary to improve the listening skill and counter the difficulties in listening comprehension. The research method was qualitative research method. The participants of this study were four students. The researcher was asked for recommendation to the listening lecturers, then the researcher met them personally, then the researcher conducted the open-ended interview session to collect the data. The researcher was used familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and organizing to analyze the collected data. The findings of the research explained that the difficulties included limited vocabulary, speed of native speakers’ speech, natives speakers’ accent, classroom environment, lack of concentration and motivation. However, the students’ strategies were the use of media as the learning tool, practicing listening material continuously and reading short stories to get new vocabulary. The students suggested applying the strategies provided to overcome their difficulties. However, this research was expected to be developed by the future researchers who had the same interest.

Abstract

Kemampuan metode CHAID sebagai teknik nonparametrik berbentuk algoritma pohon klasifikasi yang efektif untuk data berukuran besar serta kemudahan interpretasi model prediksi yang berbentuk pohon keputusan menjadikan CHAID bermanfaat untuk membantu dalam proses analisis data pendidikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan perbedaan hasil prediksi ketepatan waktu lulus mahasiswa Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Islam Malang berdasarkan pada penguasaan kompetensi menggunakan metode CHAID dengan dan tanpa penentuan prediktor utama. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa ada tidaknya penentuan prediktor utama memberikan perbedaan pada variabel-variabel prediktor yang terlibat untuk memprediksi variabel terikat dan juga pada segmentasi target yang ingin dicapai untuk tujuan prediksi variabel terikat. Akan tetapi, ada tidaknya penentuan prediktor utama tersebut tidak mempengaruhi jumlah prediktor yang terlibat dan tingkat akurasi analisis CHAID yang dilakukan.The ability of CHAID method as a nonparametric technique which is an effective classification tree algorithm for large data size as well as the decision tree prediction model which is easier to be interpreted make CHAID useful to help in educational data analysis. This paper aims to describe differences in predicting student’s graduation accuracy of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, University of Islam Malang, based on the competence mastery using CHAID method with and without determining a main predictor. The results conclude that determining or not determining the main predictor gives differences to the predictor variables involved and also to the segmentation targets in predicting dependent variable. However, the determining or not determining the main predictor does not affect the number of predictors involved and the level of accuracy of the CHAID analysis carried out.
