Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of idioms and the meaning of idioms in Coldplay's song, entitled Hymn For The Weekend, Amazing Day, A Head Full Of Dreams, And Birds by using F R Palmers theory of idiom types and Geoffrey Leech's theory of idiom meanings. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data of this research are Coldplay song lyrics. Data analysis was carried out by categorizing all lyrics into types of idioms and idiom meanings. These types are analyzed to find out what meanings are in the song lyrics. Research used document analysis to obtain data. In analyzing the data, the research used New Criticism. In validating the data, the research used triangulation theory.The research found that the researchers found 176 of the four song lyrics. The data are classified into idiom meanings which consist of Conceptual Meaning (1 data), Connotative Meaning (22 data), Stylistic Meaning (24 data), Affective Meaning (84 data), Reflective Meaning (15 data), Collocative Meaning (1 data) , Thematic Meaning (28 data). Then the researchers also clarifies into idiom types which consist of phrasal verb (11 data), preposition verb (10 data), partial idiom (8 data) of the data, Affective and Phrasal verb meanings are more dominant than other types. This describes the speaker expressing more personal feelings or emotions and using verbs with adverbs.

Abstract

 The title of this research is deixis which is used by Jo March in the film Little Women. This study focuses on deixis using the theory of Levinson in the film Little Women. The object of this study is the utterances delivered by Jo March as the main character in the film Little Women. First, this study aims to explain the kinds of deixis used by Jo March as the main role in the film Little Women. Second, this study aims to explain the reference to the word deixis used by Jo March as the main role in the film Little Women. This research method used by researchers is a qualitative descriptive method. The research data was taken from the film Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Greta Gerwig based on the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This film originated from America in 2019. The results showed that there were 352 speech data containing deixis. From these data, there are three types of deixis studied. From these data, there were 308 person deixis, 20 place deixis, and 24 time deixis. The deixis phrase that is often used by Jo March is the I expression which refers to Jo which is included in the singular first person deixis (singular first person deixis). There are 120 data for expression I. Meanwhile, the reference most often used by speakers themselves is 308 data.

Abstract

This study uses a discourse analysis approach on Solo Baru billboards. The purpose of this study was to describe the microstructural analysis of Solo Baru billboards. This research is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection in this study was carried out using the method of listening and documentation. The research data was taken from billboards in Solo Baru. The results of this study indicate the existence of cohesion and coherence tools in the discourse of Solo Baru billboards. The types of cohesion found were references (5 data), ellipsis (24 data), repetition (7 data), hyponymy (3 data), and collocation (6 data). The type of coherence found there is a relationship between the meaning of addition (6 data), cause (5 data), effect (5 data), and the relationship between requirements and presuppositions (4 data), and time (2 data).
