Abstract

The present paper develops an English reading book that embeds local values of West Kalimantan Province of Indonesia, represented by plants used by local people for medication. The book will help language learners in two ways. First, it helps the learners with familiar information which they have found in their daily lives. Second, this book tries to preserve the local culture among millennial students who are immensely exposed to western lifestyles. ADDIE model of material development was adopted in the paper. The present paper only discusses the first three stages of the model. 40 participants of a university in West Kalimantan Province were invited to take part in the need analysis stage. They were requested to voluntarily fill questionnaires which included their personal information, reading habit, and familiarity towards West Kalimantan medicinal plants. The results of the questionnaires assisted the researchers to visualise the needs of the learners before the book was actually designed. It helped us set the book content, format, and level of difficulty. On top of that, the results informed the researchers on parts of the questionnaires that should be improved and items that should be excluded. Abstract

Study habit is key to the success of the learning process. The study habit can be obtained when students have the intention to do so. Generally, the intention arises from repeated actions. In the TUTEP training class, the habits of the students during the training program can determine the test result. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect of study habits among the students or trainees on increasing their TUTEP scores. A descriptive-correlation method was used to describe the positive day-to-day habits that the trainees did to increase their TUTEP scores. The study involved respondents who attended the TUTEP training class and obtained a significant improvement in their TUTEP score before and after participating in the training. The main instrument in this study was the Palsane and Sharma Study Habit Inventory (Looyeh et al., 2017). The instrument has eight sub-scales of study habits. The results indicated that the significant test obtained was a ttest value of 0.738, where the ttest value was greater than ttable (0.738 0.254). In other words, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between study habits and increased TUTEP scores of the trainees. Furthermore, based on the highest average value (mean) of study habits which was obtained from respondents, three indicators yielded the highest scores, namely the exam (4.66), the health (4.59), and the time management indicators (4.36).

Abstract

Although the Extensive Reading (ER) program has multiple benefits for language learners, the long nature of this program can make it daunting, especially for those with limited book selection.  Thus, ensuring a book collection that fits the learners’ preferences is crucial, not only to maintain their reading enjoyment during the program but also to save costs. This research then investigated learners' reading preferences during an ER program, particularly by looking at the reading genres that were frequently chosen by the learners. This research was conducted on 30 university students who took English as a mandatory course. The course used ER as part of the curriculum. This research recorded the learners’ reading preferences through a reading log. This log must be filled in after reading a book or text. Overall, the research generated 373 entries. The results of this research indicated participants’ high interest in books with the themes of drama (slice of life), tales, and comedy. The current research also discovered a preference difference between gender. In conclusion, this research believes ER practitioners must consider learners’ preferences to provide suitable book collections for students. Thus, the learners can read more comfortably and maintain their motivation.
