Abstract

This article aims to analyze the response of Indonesia in an effort to counterbalance the development of military power in Southeast Asia during the 1998-2010 periods. This response is placed on the dimensions of the development policy of Indonesia's defense posture. The author uses a case study design. Through analysis of various documents, books, journals, and other sources as well as interviews with several experts in the field of defense and military, the author argues that Indonesia's defense posture development policy (land, sea, and air) in response to the military development in the countries of the Southeast Asia region during 1998-2010 period was intended to achieve more deterrent power than building an offensive force. The policy was made in light of the perception that the countries in Southeast Asia had the potential to threaten the security and sovereignty of Indonesia. Meanwhile, Indonesia's ability to build up military strength in the upper levels was very limited deterrent. Limited sources of funding and political support as well as weaknesses in analyzing the strategic environment of the region led to the development of the policy could not achieve the level of deterrent and also have not gotten to the point'strategic stability'. Indonesia was plagued by the problems of arms embargo by foreign countries and still has problems in the institutionalization of research and development.

Abstract

This article elaborates transnational organized crime (TOC) in Europe after the UK's exit from membership in the European Union (EU) or better known as British Exit (Brexit). Focusing on the highlights from 2016 to 2022, the elaboration is limited to explanations regarding the definitions, policies, and forms of TOC. Presenting a descriptive-qualitative study, the author uses secondary data in the form of various credible documents mainly issued by the EU, EUROPOL (especially the European Union Serious and Organized Crime Threat Assessment (SOCTA) document) in 2017 and 2021, as well as data from the UNODC. The argument that the writer puts forward is based on the Zabyelina dan Đorđević’s thoughts, namely their assumptions in a liberal institutionalist perspective. In addition, the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols Thereto (UNCTOC) assists the author in explaining the cooperation carried out by the EU with other partners to combat the TOC threats. The results of this study indicate that the UNCTOC definition is still being adopted by Europe. The policy shift occurred in the adjustment of the rule of law, particularly between the UK and the EU, as a consequence of Brexit.

Abstract

This research explains the various vulnerabilities and security threats faced by Lampung Province. This study is based on the fact that there has been an increase in types of threats at the global level from year to year, at least in the last three years. At the nation-state level, Indonesia is also aware of the increasingly complex variety of threats. This can be seen from the explanation in the Indonesian Defense White Papers which had been published in 2003, 2008, and 2015. One of the critical subnational entities to study is Lampung. The analytical frameworks used are the concepts of city security and vulnerability. Data were collected through a literature review with data sources from a number of official online pages, namely BPS Lampung Province, UNDP, WALHI, and others. This project reveals that there were threats and vulnerabilities carried by Lampung Province, including environmental, economic, political and social security.
