Abstract

The problem in this thesis is the irony of love story between two human beings who are in love, the irony occurs when the fate has separated their love story. The tragic story of Hazel and Augustus' love is inspired by the author's visit to chronic cancer patients at the hospital, about their hopes and love that would be impossible to achieve. In this writing, library research is taken as the method of data collection. As for data analysis method, the writer performs systematic procedures by understanding the novels, the characters of Hazel and Augustus, as well as the structural theory. Data collection technique uses documentation technique in finding relevant data to the subject of analysis. In data analysis techniques, the writer uses structural technique by analyzing the novel based on the elements that shape them. The results of research in this thesis are: 1) destiny seems to separate the love story of Hazel and Augustus, where Hazel is suffered from the chronic cancer while Augustus is in good shape, but Augustus is willing to love Hazel until the end of life, 2) destiny continues to play their love story, this time it is August that suffers from chronic illness and is on the verge of death, while Hazel's condition is getting better. This time, it is Hazel that loves Augustus until the end of his life, and faithfully accompanied him; 3) the irony has occurred in the love story of Hazel and Augustus where the unfair destiny has turned the deaths and hopes on both of them, the one who is almost dies has become better, on the contrary the one who is healthy has been picked by the death in the end. The love story and hope of being together have been ironically played by the fate.

Abstract

The problem in this thesis is the racial discrimination from white community against black community that was their former slave in the past, the author analyzes three poems by Zephaniah based on the issue of racial discrimination. Poem represents the poet’s feeling about the social phenomena that surrounds him, and these poems are also the form of protest against racial discrimination. The purpose of this study is to analyze the treatment from white communities against black communities that consider that their race to be superior compared to their former slaves. The manifestation of racial discrimination can be seen from the attitude of prejudice, insulting words and remarks, and the acts of oppression on black community. In this writing, library research is taken as the method of data collection. As for the method of data analysis, the author performs systematic procedures by understanding of the poem, the theme of racial discrimination, and also the theory of psychology. Data collection technique uses qualitative techniques in finding the data in form of explanation on the phenomenon that occurs. In the technique of data analysis, the writer uses genetic structuralism techniques by analyzing the oppression of black society in Zephaniah’s poems through psychology theory. The findings in this thesis are: 1) in the poem of The Race Industry, white society always oppresses black society so that they have to work hard but do not get the result that they deserves, 2) in poem We Refugee, white society always have prejudice against black people because of their skin color and not because of their actions, 3) in Dis Poetry, white community always says provocative words and remarks to offend black people.

Abstract

The problem in this thesis is the symbols contained in the civil war in Spain. This fight has taken many casualties, death is common, but the soldiers continue to struggle and sacrifice for the hope of victory. The three themes of the struggle about death, sacrifice, and hope are reflected in the symbols of the war. In this writing, literature research is taken as a method of data collection. As for data analysis methods, the authors perform systematic procedures with the understanding of novels, symbols and symbol analysis, as well as semiotic theory. Data collection techniques use documentation techniques in finding data relevant to the subject. In data analysis techniques, the authors use structural techniques by analyzing novels based on the elements that shape them. The results of the research in this thesis are: 1) dynamite is a symbol of death, it can be connected with dynamite properties that can destroy anything around him, here are three Robert who aims to destroy the enemy by installing dynamite, 2) dynamite trigger is a symbol of sacrifice from the The main character, without any trigger, dynamite will not be explosive, Robert in this novel self-criticism to prevent enemies from being able to chase his fleeing friends, 3) the bridge as a symbol of hope, this is connected with the nature of the bridge connecting the two Side, Robert at the end of the story gives hope to his friends to stay safe from the battlefield.

Abstract

The notebook is a romantic novel by literary writer Nicholas Sparks. The analysis focuses on the story line narrated by Noah Calhoun. Noah is a young man from a poor family, Noah is in love with Allie a girl from a wealthy family. This research uses a structural approach. This approach is a pure approach to literature mixing other disciplines into the discussion. The theory used is the extrinsic theory of literature itself, and is also supported by the flow theory where the character Noah Calhoun seeking his true love. This study also uses structural methods, in which all data is only analyzed in the elements that make up the literary works themselves, such as grooves and characterizations. In this study the authors found: (1) Noah left Allie because Allie's parents did not approve of their love story, and Noah decided to go to war. Allie's parents did not approve of their relationship because noah was born from a poor family. And Allie's parents set her up with another man. (2) Noah's love affair occurs when Noah reunites with Allie and new problems arise when Allie is already fiancee with another man. Problems can be seen when the relationship is contrary to the parent because of the difference in status. But Allie kept making sense to Noah about her parents' decisions. (3) when Noah returns with Allie after Allie realizes that she loves Noah over Lon and after Allie's parents see her daughter's love for Noah they finally agree on the relationship. This novel tells about the love of the first story that turned into true love. And this novel tells about how a character Noah to be able to maintain his first love despite many obstacles.

Abstract

This thesis tell about a drama Glass Menagerie by Tennessee William. This drama memory play of narrator, Tom wingfield. He is an aspiring poet which work in warehouse to support his mother, Amanda and his sister, Laura. Mr. wingfield, Tom’s father, ran off family years ago, except for one postcard, has not been haeard from since. Amanda, originally from a genteel family, regales her children frequently with tales of her idyllic youth and the scores of suitors who once pursued her. She is disappointed that Laura, who wears a brace one her leg and is painfully shy, does not attract any gentlemen callers. Amanda then decides that Laura’s last hope must lie in marriage and begins selling magazine subscriptions to earn the extra money she believes will help to attract suitors for Laura.

Abstract

The object of this research is the struggle of women as reflected by the main character Hardy, namely Tess. The author intends to show how the picture of a woman who never gives up to get a decent life, even though in the end she chose the wrong decision and ended her own life. The approach used in the analysis of women's struggles is a feminist approach, this is intended to provide an ideal view of women in literary works that are the object of male domination. In this research, the writer uses three methods: data collection by applying library research, data analysis using content analysis method that emphasizes the implied and explicit meaning in the fictional character of the literary work, and data representation by compiling the data obtained in systematic writing, namely thesis. The author sees that the character of Tess, as a woman who never gives up in her life. He had made several fatal mistakes which later brought misery and his own end. If only Tess hadn't made that mistake her life would have been for the better. First, if Tess hadn't told her she'd been raped then Angel wouldn't have left her. Second, if Tess didn't reject Angel's intention to return then she would live happily with her husband. Third, if Tess hadn't killed Alec, then she wouldn't have been sentenced to death and could live her life with her husband Angel.

Abstract

This research is motiyated by the difficulties of students in translating article related COVID-19 from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The purpose of this study was determine by the ability of students in translating article. The method used in this research was descriptive gualitative method. In this research, the member of the population member was 14 students, the population was the students from English department 15"-17" academic year of Universitas Ekasakti. The sample of this research was total sampling. Instrument that use in this research was translating an article related COVID-19. This data obtained from the result of test given to students, the authors found the value of three criteria of translating skill in article COVID-19, 'Accuracy, Grammatically and Eguivalence, It can be coneluded that the ability of students Accuracy is high, obtained 13 from 14 students got high score (92.86) and Grammatically there are 13 from 14 students got high score (92.890) and Eguivalence there are 13 from 14 students got high score (92.896). Based in the research analysis, the researcher was suggested to Translation lecturer give students more task and practice their translation skill. Thus, the students are trained in translating,

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian ini merupakan kegiatan pengabdian yang melibatkan dosen dan mahasiswa program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Ekasakti. Sebanyak enam orang dosen pembimbing serta 5 orang mahasiswa turut serta dalam pelaksanaan pengabdian ini. Mahasiswa tersebut merupakan mahasiswa yang merupakan mahasiswa semester 5. Dalam kegiatan ini dosen-dosen prodi pendidikan Bahasa Inggris berperan dalam memberikan materi dan dibantu oleh mahasiswa untuk mempersiapkan kegiatan belajar mengajar di SMK Pelayaran Padang. Dengan mempertimbangkan aspek pengajaran yang “fun dan Communicative”, siswa dipersiapkan untuk mendapatkan kegiatan- kegiatan yang tepat dan bermakna untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan keterampilan Berbahasa Inggris. Mengingat pentingnya Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SMK Pelayaran Padang, kegiatan pengabdian ini memberikan ruang bagi siswa untuk mengasah keterampilan Bahasa Inggris mereka sebagai sarana untuk mempersiapkan diri setelah tamat dan bekerja di bagian pelayaran.
