Abstract

Abstract

AbstractA Community Service Activity (PkM) are carried out by the Anthropology Department Team in Wonotirto Village, Temanggung Regency. Early marriage is still a challenge for quality family development. There is a fact that, for the target community, getting married at an early age is not a problem, while from a government perspective it is a serious problem, especially the adverse impacts on social, economic, and reproductive health aspects. Participatory solution of early marital problems is important to be made as a priority. Preliminary observations show that there are economic and cultural reasons that encourage someone to be married off at an early age. The PkM results several important things related to the condition of the community and their understanding of early marriage. First, in general, the community realizes the importance of more mature planning in preparing for the formation of a new family. Second, early marriages that occurred in the last decade were caused by pregnancy due to the promiscuity of children, the habit of watching porn videos, and dropping out of school while the previous decade was due to arranged marriages. Third, adolescents targeted by the program have committed to campaign for the prevention of early marriage. They post and disseminate messages on prevention of early marriage through the WA group. Fourth, young people want the facilitation for  activities of post-school youth.----------AbstrakKegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) dilakukan oleh Tim Departemen Antropologi di Desa Wonotirto, Kabupaten Temanggung.

Abstract

This article is about how Indonesian women talk about their beauty practices. They are aware how their beauty routines are often seen as banal and shallow but simultaneously essential to their gendered beings. However, this article argues that women are able to subvert the deprecating narratives of their beauty regimes into empowering ones while maintaining the same practices. Through their practices, they seem to conform to the beauty requirement in society. However, through their discourse, they present their beauty regimes with perspectives that put their free will and agency at the centre of their beauty regimes. The research used a sample of twenty-two Indonesian women aged from the mid-twenties to mid-sixties, to ask about beauty routines. Their answers are analyzed by using feminist discourse analysis to seek possibilities of subversion and empowerment. Another theoretical approach used in this research is the politics of everyday lives. The problematization of everyday practices allows for the deconstruction of ideology that perpetuates gendered norms of beauty. This research is significant because it provides a blueprint for further research on gender politics in the 21st century that focuses on everyday practices.

Abstract

In this article, I analyse the covers of Gadis, a magazine for Indonesian teenage girls, from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, I examine these magazine covers as manifestations of local gender ideology amidst pressures from a globalized market. The models on the magazine covers are the embodiment of ideal teenagers and they reflect the magazine's personification of Indonesian adolescents. Images of the models in conjunction with the article titles displayed on the covers construct dominant themes surrounding the lives of female adolescents. In this article, I argue that the dominant gender ideology is perpetuated by the magazine; however, the embodiment of the ideology is shifting from the girly adolescent image to that of a more mature and sophisticated young woman.
