Abstract

Mass media often perceived Asian Culture as a powerless culture. Just like in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film that criticizing Asian culture. This study aimed to unveil the social criticism of Asian culture depicted on To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. This qualitative study using Popular Culture Theory with Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method by three elements of analysis (denotation, connotation, and myth). This study unveiled that the social criticism of Asian culture is linked with its collectivistic culture and interdependent characteristic, also overly-controlled Asian parents. This study also found the shift and consolidation of myth of Asian culture. Other than that, social criticism of Asian culture depicted on the film is the form of low culture and used as the asset to gain profit. Therefore, Asian culture has been marginalized and wrapped as a form of commercialized culture. Keywords: asian culture, popular culture, film, social criticism, semiotics

Abstract

Paniis Lestari as a tourism driving community in Paniis Village has a number problems in promoting Paniis as a tourism village. The lack of promotion is one of the problems that need to be solved, in addition to the tsunami disaster that hit the area. For this reason, community service communities are carried out to formulate audio-visual product concept for the promotion of Paniis. In this activity, community service offers the ASDAMBA concept for Paniis Lestari. What, Who, Where Why and How. What can be done in Paniis, who can be contected to go to Paniis, where is Paniis, why do we have to go to Paniis, and how do we go to Paniis. The concept then produces a work product than can be uploaded to Paniis Lestari’s social media.

Abstract

Fashion tak hanya atribut semata karena memiliki makna tertentu. Hal ini juga muncul dalam film Birds of Prey. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui analisis semiotika fashion Harley Quinn dalam Film Birds of Prey. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif dan metode analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce dengan trikotominya yaitu sign, object dan interpretant serta teori konstruksi realitas sosial di media massa. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa fashion yang dikenakan oleh Harley Quinn digunakan untuk menyatakan identitas diri, imitasi, dan modifikasi. Dalam penelitian ini fashion dalam film juga ingin menunjukkan transformasi dan diferensiasi diri sehingga memperlihatkan simbolisasi status. Selain itu, fashion dan pakaian dapat dijadikan alat perlawanan dan perlindungan diri.Kata kunci: Fashion, Film, Semiotika, Teori Konstruksi Realitas Sosial di Media Massa

Abstract

Advertising is not a tool to sell a product. The ideology that has been carried by the advertising creator is used to resist the common ideology. Homosexuality isstill thought of as a sexual deviation and a crime. This research’s purpose is to disassemble the homosexuality in the Taipei McCafe’s advertising. Thisresearch is using popular culture, and Barthes’s analysis. From the second order of signification (denotation, connotation, and myth) it is shown that havinga gay son is a shame condition for a parent commonly. It is a hard situation for each parent to find out that his son loves a guy too. Through this study, theresearcher also found that homosexuals are part of the family whose existence must be accepted by parents. Homosexuals in this advertisement areconsidered as people who can determine their right to choose their partners and can be accepted as part of the family. In the beginning, advertising is only atool to sell the product, but this situation shows that becoming gay is a common thing. Homosexuality is just the sexual preference. Homosexuality it is not asexual deviation. So, parent nowadays, has to accept their son’s sexual preference. From this advertising, the advertisers are trying to resist the ideology about refusing the homosexuality.

Abstract

South Korea has an unusual profession. The profession is a trauma cleaner profession that appears in the web series Move to Heaven. This study aims to determine the portrayal of trauma cleaner profession in the web series Move to Heaven. This study uses the theory of Social Reality construction and semiotic analysis using Charles Sanders Peirce through the Triangle meaning of sign, object, and interpretation. The results of this study found that there are nine depictions of the trauma cleaner profession that are divided into two, namely positive and negative. Among them, the trauma cleaner profession is described as a profession that is conscientious in taking care of death, has high integrity and is professional in its work, loves cleanliness and obeys regulations, requires calmness and concentration, has high empathy, has good relationships with other professions, and is a noble profession. In addition, the profession of trauma cleaner is looked down upon by the community and is prone to mental disorders. Thus, web series become a construction tool of social reality, especially regarding the profession.

Abstract

The role of radio has undergone significant developments and changes. One example is Radio Sonora 93.3 FM Bandung. Radio Sonora is a radio that dares to raise the theme of health on one of its radio programs. With this theme, Radio Sonora shows concern for the dynamics of public health. On Radio Sonora, health messages were inserted in the show SONAR (Song Information and Reports). Through this event, listeners will get entertainment through songs and health information packaged attractively. SONAR listeners will feel free to listen to the various entertainments and be educated through the health information they convey. SONAR collaborates with several well-known hospitals in Bandung to make the information presented more convincing and exciting. This study describes how Sonora radio communicates health messages through sonar shows. This research used health communication theory as a basis and was developed through the concept of promoting health programs using radio media. The approach used is qualitative research with a case study method. The subject in this study was Radio Sonora. This research paradigm uses constructivism and descriptive methods. The results of this study show that the SONAR program is carried out with a persuasive approach that emphasizes the character of broadcasting that can persuade broadcast material by combining entertainment with health topics currently popular in the community. The conclusion and benefit of this study are that viewers get better, directed, and direct health knowledge from experts.

Abstract

Sensuality in television commercial (TVC) is still considered as an attractive things to get the attention from the audience. Many brands assume that ads on the television can be accepted by the audience. The audience that consuming media categorized as passive and accepting all the content on media. However, in reality the audience is active and they don’t take it for granted. The aim of this research is to find out reception of Deltoidz bodybuilder community about sensuality on Pond’s Men Lightning Oil Clear TVC. The research uses qualitative approach, with Reception Analysis method, and Encoding-Decoding Theory. This research uses In-depth interview to collecting data from Deltoidz bodybuilder community. The results of this research is from all five informants, three informants categorized in Hegemonic-Domination position, one informant categorized in Opposition position, and one informant categorized in Negotiation position. Each informant interpreted it based on their knowledge and experience of sensuality.

Abstract

Discrimination against Chinese Ethnic always becomes a controversial issue for many parties and even appears to be an economic value for a number of mass communication products. This study reveals Discrimination against Chinese Ethnic in Indonesia in the Bondo Wani (MLI) investigation video content in Episode 2 about Java vs Chinese in Surabaya with signs and symbols using Roland Barthes' Semiotic analysis. Researchers use the theory of Popular Culture. Researchers analyzed the data using analysis-Semiotics Roland Barthes. Researcher outlines denotations, connotations, and myths related to discrimination in investigation video content. The results show that there is a shift and consolidation of the meaning of discrimination. In society, the myth of ethnic Chinese discrimination is class division, society borders. Discrimination in the content of Bondo wani's investigation is about cross marriage which is considered forbidden. It can be concluded that ethnic Chinese are often called "Chinese" with negative connotations, as a lowly minority, and do not have nationalism.

Abstract

Women are often seen as second class, unable to freedom in education, health, and politics and even in the family. But web series Anne With An E against women who are still seen as second class. The purpose of this research is to reveal the struggles waged by female figures in the web series Anne With An E. This research uses popular culture theory with a qualitative approach and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method with three elements of analysis (denotation, connotation, and myth). This research reveals that women are still struggling to achieve gender equality in the fields of health, politics and the family. Through this research, researchers also found a shift and solidification of the myths of women's social resistance. In addition, the reality of social resistance which is described in the web series of this research is trapped in an industrial and commercialization pattern, because in fact the struggle to bring about equality is a false consciousness, only for the sake of making a profit.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that sufferers experience over a long period of time. Schizophrenia is the theme of the concept and theme in Feby Putri's video clip titled "Halu". The purpose of this study is to find out the construction of schizophrenia in the Halu - Feby Putri Video Clip using the paradigm of constructivism. This study uses the Theory of Social Media Mass Reality Construction and uses qualitative approach based on semiotic analysis using the meaning triangle of Charles Sanders Peirce, researchers use triangle of meaning namely sign, object, and intepretant. The study found that schizophrenia was constructed as an inability to control emotions, psychosis, impulses, hallucinations, behavioral instability, lack of confidence, emptiness, discomfort, hendaya to emotional thoughts, perceptions and behaviors, impaired concentration, emotional pain. Video clips can construct schizophrenia through every sign used inside.
