Abstract

Public speaking is frequently referred to as an anxiety-provoking activity. Volition is linked to individuals' willpower and persistence to face distraction in achieving particular goals. The participants are the 30 public speaking class students. This study used a questionnaire and interview as the instruments for data collection. The volitional strategies found in this study are split into two kinds: action control and emotion control strategies. The factors influencing students in learning public speaking revealed are inferiority or lack of self-esteem, audience pressures, the absence of preparation, references, vocabulary; and unpredictable examination. The researcher concluded that the students show high volitional stage with their own strategies to overcome anxiety and distractions in public speaking class. Abstract

Teaching is one of the fundamental professions in society. Pre-service English teachers’ perceptions and motivations may significantly influence their career decision-making to enter the profession. This study aimed to investigate pre-service English teachers’ perceptions and motivations to enter the teaching profession. It employed mixed-method research with questionnaire and interview as the instruments to collect data. The respondents were 44 pre-service English teachers from an English Teacher Education Department of a well-known university, in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Results showed that the students had various perceptions regarding the teaching profession and most of them were altruistically motivated to be teachers in the future. The current study offers two important implications. First, since perceptions and motivations to enter the teaching profession are not fixed and may be influenced by the students’ family, environment, and study program, building positive perceptions and motivations should be an integrated element of the teacher education curriculum. Second, graduating students need strong support from the family, environment, and the government to maintain positive perceptions and motivations about the profession.

Abstract

Several studies have recorded the increasing number of teachers who left the profession in the first year of teaching in recent years. The main cause is the difficulties over the first year of teaching and the unsatisfactory construction and growth of professional identity. This qualitative study attempted to reveal the struggles faced during their first year of teaching by EFL novice teachers working in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia and how they coped with those struggles regarding their development of professional identity. The struggles are split into internal and external struggles based on the result. The internal struggles are linked to how teachers controlled their emotions self-efficacy, and ability to teach, their jobs and their personal opinions. The external challenges related to the management of the classroom, the abilities, and attitudes of the students, the lack of resources and facilities in the school, the relationships with their colleagues and their salaries. This research is intended to provide more insight into the realities of teachers working in an underdeveloped province like East Nusa Tenggara, in particular how they establish their professional identity in a lack of facilities and learning resources. Keywords: East Nusa Tenggara; Novice Teachers; Professional Identity; Struggles and Strategies

Abstract

Teachers frequently experience a wide variety of emotions during their teaching services. It is reported that the teachers ‘emotional experiences affect their performances in the classroom and can be one of the main sources of burnout and retention. This study captures the emotional experiences faced by a beginning teacher in her first days in the teaching practice program in an institution. This is a self-study with descriptive qualitative as the method of research. The researcher analyzed the teaching reflection as the instrument of the research. Based on the reflection, the teacher experienced emotional teaching practice mostly in dealing with the students’ behavior, discipline and engagement. She is also emotionally triggered in dealing with dissatisfaction and students’ effort in learning. Before pre-service teachers begin their teaching practice in schools, it is suggested that education study programs draw attention to this problem. Pre-service teachers must also comprehend the significance of reflective practices so that they can learn from their classroom performances and encounters. Future researchers are urged to investigate teachers’ emotional experiences in a broader context and with a greater number of participants.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Stunting, Kebun Gizi, Kuanheum, Kupang Barat  ABSTRACT Presently, the occurrence of stunting is a severe and critical concern. Stunting is a condition caused by malnutrition in children that inhibits their growth and development. The key to ensuring the nutrition of children and toddlers and implementing measures to prevent and treat stunting in the community is a family's understanding of the significance of food availability. The UNWIRA Real Work Lecture (KKN) group created a nutrition garden in the Kuanheum village area, West Kupang District, Kupang Regency, to recognize the significance of proper nutrition for infants and young children. This activity is carried out so that the results of this garden can meet the nutritional needs of children and families in the village of Kuanheum, particularly children with a diagnosis of stunting. From tilling through planting and keeping crops, a tilled nutrition garden requires roughly a month. Mustard seeds, spinach, kale, tomatoes, long beans, chickpeas, eggplants, carrots, yellow squash, Chinese okra, and watermelon were grown after planting. In addition, maintaining the garden will be transferred to the community in the hopes that the residents of Kuanheum village can benefit from the nutrition garden created by UNWIRA students. Keywords: Stunting, Nutrition Garden, Kuanheum, Kupang

Abstract

The study used a descriptive qualitative design to explore the pronunciation of English words in public spaces in Kupang City, Indonesia. Data were collected from ten local respondents, predominantly Timorese, through field observations and interactions on public roads. The research documented and analyzed 152 English words found in hotels, billboards, supermarkets, stores, public transportation, and food establishments. The analysis focused on the locals' pronunciation of these words, revealing variations and humorous elements that highlight unique aspects of language use. The findings underscored the widespread presence of English and other foreign languages in the city's public spaces. They demonstrated the pronunciation challenges faced by non-native speakers, particularly Indonesian speakers, with limited exposure to English. The study provided insights into the influence of English on rural life in Indonesia and how locals navigate and express identity through language. It contributed to understanding the role of English as a global language in non-native English-speaking regions, emphasizing the diverse pronunciation patterns encountered in such contexts.
