Abstract

This paper elucidates the relationship among pre-service teachers’ beliefs about language learning, pedagogical beliefs, and beliefs about ICT Integration through survey methodology. This study employed a quantitative approach, particularly a correlational relationship to investigate the relationships among beliefs about language learning, pedagogical beliefs, and beliefs about ICT integration by utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM). SEM was applied to model the relationships in a set of three domains: beliefs about language learning, pedagogical beliefs, and beliefs about ICT integration. A questionnaire was administered to 103 pre-service EFL teachers who have accomplished their teaching practice in secondary schools. The results of the three types of beliefs obtained from the questionnaire were then analyzed through Structural Equation Model (SEM). It was revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between beliefs about language learning and pedagogical beliefs, and that between the former and beliefs about ICT integration, while a positive correlation between pedagogical beliefs and beliefs about ICT integration was not found. Insightful implications to EFL teaching and learning were discussed.

Abstract

This paper centers around the ideas of developing students' media literacy through integrating Japanese language learning and multimedia form. This media is utilized to facilitate Japanese irregular verbs (Doushi) learning on the basis of morphological changes. One of Japanese verb forms which is employed frequently are words which have suffix -te, for they are use ask, order and allow interlocutors to do something (-te kudasai); to show present activities (-te imasu), to give permission (-temo ii desu); and to show prohibitions (-tewa ikemasen). Preliminary study elucidated that students found these Doushiare problematic and complex; thus, additional learning media to learn autonomously is inevitable for students to practice outside the classroom tasks. Researchers attempt to achieve this by developing appropriate teaching media by using Macromedia Flas8 software based on ADDIE model research and design steps, including Analysis, Design, Development and Implementation, Evaluation. The media is called Kumori, which provides interactive and meaningful media for student self-directed learning. The findings shows that Kumorias the instructional media in learning Japanese vocabulary which follows steps of the ADDIE model in order to produce an effective and efficient instructional tool for language learning, can give positive impact to students’ academic achievement. Therefore, adopting an appropriate instructional model must because it is a systematic process in developing proper instructional materials for an effective education and training program. Further, Kumorialso expected to able to contribute and implicated in Japanese language teaching and learning.

Abstract

Inclusive education is seen as promising way to accommodate students with disabilities in accessing higher education; yet, the implementation leaves challenges for the students with disabilities and also the faculties. Regarding the secondary education curriculum that is not preparing students with disabilities to attend higher education, students with disabilities are struggling in adjusting college life. This research aimed at confirming the influence of college readiness to college engagement of students with disabilities. There were 61 college students with disabilities participated in the survey on college readiness and college engagement. Independent T-Test and simple regression analysis was applied to test the hypothesis. The result showed that the college readiness influence college engagement with large effect size (r=.769>0.50, F=85.494, p (.000) <0.01) which indicates that the more students are college-ready, the more they are engaged. Subsection’s variables of gender and education background do not statistically significant affect the college readiness and engagement of students with disabilities. As the opportunity for students with disabilities attending college is uprising, college transition program is highly suggested to prepare students with disability for college life.

Abstract

Implementing inclusive education, the process of providing all learners with equal educational opportunities, is a major challenge for many educational systems worldwide, for it requires changes to values, system, and practices. In the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) in university, teachers are expected to be able to select, transform, or augment Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Differentiated Instruction (DI) as a framework to guarantee accessibility of all learner types to the learning environment by employing specific educational design guidelines, to fit their leaners', notably for the blinds. Data on what has led EFL teachers to join the reform of the teaching instruction and how they tackle problems during implementation cannot be located. Thus, the aim of this qualitative study is to uncover reasons for EFL teachers to participate in and what they did to facilitate the instruction wide effort to practice inclusive education, as well as challenges encountered. Key findings included implementing university policy as prime reasons for practicing inclusive education, utilizing UDL and DI as the key to successful implementation for instructional teaching, and inadequate resources and teacher training as the main challenges. Recommendations consists of providing disability-specific pre- and in- service training programs for teachers and making arrangements of sufficient educational materials and assessment based on UDL and DI towards EFL instructions.

Abstract

Reading comparison and contrast texts in English language teaching (ELT) program was developed which ensured a range of students could be facilitated with instructional materials for their course and level of study. These materials have been developed around the concept of educational inclusion, intercultural communication and information and communication technology (ICT) utilization which can be combined into whole units of learning (topics), teaching and learning activities and media, and ultimately a student book, student work book, and lecturer guide. On the basis of the underlying philosophy from the new curriculum of the study program, we considered effective instruction to be a key element in engaging students with reading materials. There were six stages of R&D method from Borg and Gall (2003) modified by the researchers consist of need analysis, developing material, expert validation, revision, try out, and the final product. Three instruments consist of informal interview, expert’s validation checklist, and questionnaire for the product try out were utilized to develop reading comprehension instructional materials. The products consisted of student book chapter, student workbook chapter, and lecturer manual book chapter of reading comparison, and contrast texts. In consequence, the key aim of this development was to stimulate and engage students, fostering better involvement with the reading comprehension materials and hence better learning.

Abstract

The development of appropriate teaching materials not only needs to be adjusted to the latest curriculum but also to the needs of the parties involved in learning. One of the parties involved is the learner. The needs of learners in the learning process must be known in order to develop appropriate teaching materials. This study is intended to map the needs of learners in the Seminar on ELT class as a first step to develop appropriate teaching materials by considering the different characteristics of students through the perspective of their epistemological beliefs. The participants involved in this study were 102 students who had attended the Seminar on ELT class. The result showed that majority of Seminar on ELT students (95%) are having sophisticated epistemic beliefs which we can describe them as the students that believe the knowledge is always changing or tentative, learning can be done individually by everyone, their knowledge of English did not come from authority, but through reason or logic experiences. They also believe that everyone can learn English from the beginning, no matter what age, or even their background. They agree on process-oriented learning. They also tend to have high motivation to learn English regardless of whether the motivation is extrinsic or intrinsic motivation. With this finding, we can finally understand the characteristics of the Seminar on ELT students as an initial step to develop an appropriate course material. Abstract

The common phenomenon among students, which becomes the persistent problem faced by many English teachers, is the attempt to sustain genuine interest in continuing to learn and use English, especially reading once the examinations are over. Teachers have to create a healthy balance between preparing students for the standardized examination and for life-long language skills. Utilizing an effective teaching technique like the KWLM can encourage students to read actively through the learning events and promote students motivation to read. This technique assists teachers to make students comprehend reading texts through charts that include column for each activity on activating students’ prior knowledge, expressing their curiosity, explaining information gotten, and extending information on the topic. As it provides an opportunity for students to expand their ideas by reading more texts, they are indirectly trained to do self-directed reading. This is justified by the students responses towards the questionnaires distributed. By utilizing the KWLM technique, the ultimate goal of language teachers to help learners become autonomous readers can be achieved. Keywords: The KWLM Technique, autonomous learner.
