Abstract

Introduction: The mechanisms of nurse response time in handling head injury patients has an important role on the safety and viability of patients in reference to the rules of “safety and time saving is life saving”. The purpose of the study: This study aims to identify factors that related to the response time in handling head injury patient in emergency department (ED) and to determine the most related factor  to the response time. Method: This study was an observation design and using cross sectional approach. A total sample of 32 emergency department nurses participated for this study, in references to the inclision and exclusion criteria. The data were analyzed by using chi-square, Fisher's extract test and logistic regression. Result: This study found that there were statistical significance between respon time and  level of education (p = 0.006), duration of working (p = 0.005), medical emergency training (p = 0.001), the emergency department facilities (p = 0.008) and the level of the patient acute condition (p = 0.006). Among the factors, it was found that facilities most related factor to the respon time (OR = 6.945). Conclusion and suggestion: It is concluded that there is a relationship between respon time and education level, work duration of nurses, medical emergency training, Emergency facilities and the patient acute condition  in handling head injury patients and facilities are the factors that most related to the response time handling head injury. It is suggested to the hospital to complete the emergency room facilities because the facilities affects the response time handling head injury patients.

Abstract

Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is still a major health problem in Indonesia. Community participation is a key component of DHF control. The group of schoolchildren is part of a group of people who can play a strategic role, considering the number is very much around 20% of the population. Through this Jumantik, the elementary school children are trained as a mosquito larva (jumantik) in their school. Objective: Establishment of larva monitoring group (Jumantik) and implementation of mosquito nest eradication activity at home and at school Method: A community service activity is conducted by recruiting and providing the training for Jumantik School Children and the teachers. Before the training, the students were given with the pre-test. After the training, the students followed the post-test and were given the mosquito eradication kit to undertake the mosquito larva monitoring at school and home. Result: As much as nine elementary students and three teachers were formed as jumantik volunteers from three different elementary schools namely Malewang, Palleko and Pangembang . The result of pre-test of 9 students, the average score of 8.67 (maximum points 15) with the highest score 11 and the lowest score 6. While the post test results obtained an average value of 11, 89 with the highest value 14 and the lowest value 10. The forms of activity for this program were: establishment of Jumatik school children, distribution of mosquito eradication kit, distribution of leaflet and stickers as the media of health promotion, provision of certificate of training of Jumantic school children and the teachers, the establishment of Plan of Action (POA) of the program and the production of second-hand good products. Conclusion and Suggestion: There are six activities that was implemented in this community service activity. It is suggested that the school to carry out routine activities according to the POA that has been agreed and the community health center can supervise the activity undertaken by the Jumantik school children. Keywords: Jumantik, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, school children, mosquito eradication

Abstract

Introductions: Less critical nurses in Indonesia may happen due to the lack of contribution of the nursing institutions in enhancing the critical thinking skill. The PSGW is one of clinical teaching methods that facilitates students to criticize the current literatures. This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of the PSGW on students’ critical appraisal skill (CAS) improvement during the medical surgical nursing clinical placement. Methods: This quasy-experimental study used pre-posttest control group design. The subjects were students who are currently in the professional practice stage of medical surgical nursing area. They were randomly assigned into two groups: 30 subjects in intervention group who conducted PSGW and 30 subjects in control group who conducted standard method of journal presentation. CAS questionnaires developed by Oxford University had been used to measure students’ CAS in criticizing the journal. The data was analyzed using Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired  t-test, and independent t-test with level of significance at 0.05.Results: The intervention group experienced a significant increase in CAS score (p=0.0001) after performing the PSGW, while the control group experienced an insignificant decrease (p=0.596) after performing the standard method of journal reading. When comparing the posttest CAS of both groups, the result showed that there were significant differences in the posttest CAS scores (p=0.0001) with large effect size (r=0.63).Conclusions: The PSGW is an effective learning method for clinical teaching. Further study needs to be performed to investigate the effectiveness of PSGW on the academic learning process.
