Abstract

Seagrapes (Caulerpa sp.) is one of the aquatic plants which tends to grow slowly according to the environmental conditions where sea grapes live. This study aims to determine the growth performance of sea grapes given different shelters. The method used in this study was three treatments, each treatment was repeated three times, with differences in the shade (P1 = paranet), (P2 = without roof), and (P3 = coconut leaves). Data analysis used a non-factorial completely randomized design (CRD). The results of this study are at absolute weights (P1 =1163.3 ± 260a g), (P2 = 210 ± 79.3b g), (P3 = 922 ± 199.5a g), absolute length (P1 = 5.75 ± 1.74a cm), (P2 = 0.59 ± 0 , 07b cm), (P3 = 4.82 ± 0.22a cm), daily growth rate (4.40 ± 0.1a %), (3.76 ± 0.09b %), (4.29 ± 0.09a) and the number of ramuli (P1 = 56.2 ± 21.3a), (P2 = 19.5 ± 2.3b), (P3 = 46.3 ± 3.1a). The conclusion of this study each parameter (absolute weight, absolute length and number of ramuli) has a significant difference.

Abstract

Embryonic development of Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer is a critical phase in the success of larval rearing production in a hatchery. Low production of larvae has been the drawback of the Asian seabass aquaculture owing to diseases and microbial infection to the eggs, causing low egg viability. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different doses of papaya leaf extracts during embryonic development to improve egg hatchability and larval survival. Six different doses of papaya leaf extracts of 2, 4, 6, 10, 20, and 25 mL were used as treatments arranged triplicates in five liter aquaria. The newly fertilized eggs (99 eggs) were immersed in each treatment for five minutes and fifteen seconds. Subsequently, the eggs were moved into 10 L incubation tanks, and samples were collected for embryogenesis observation. The hatchability of eggs was significantly different among treatments. The hatchability of larvae in group with dose of 4 mL was the best treatment (93.94 ± 0.1%) followed by 2 mL (93.88 ± 3%), and 6 mL (90.91 ± 3.0%). The different doses of papaya leaf extract significantly affected larval survival. The highest survival rate of larvae was 2 mL (93%) followed by 4 mL (90%) and 6 mL (70%). There was no significant difference in the hatching time of larvae. The fastest hatching time occurred at the dose of 6 mL about 13 hours and 30 minutes, followed by 2 mL and 4 mL treatment for about 14 hours. This study recommends that the doses of 2 mL or 4 mL of papaya leaf extracts have potential impacts on the improvement of larval rearing production for Asian seabass hatchery.

Abstract

Aquaculture is a food production sector that is developing quite rapidly in the world with a projection that production will double in the next 15-20 years. However, to run a cultivation system, you must have a large area of land and large capital. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on all aspects of people's lives. One of the aspects most affected by the pandemic is the economy, namely the occurrence of mass layoffs. Therefore, it is necessary to make alternative efforts that can help increase people's income during a pandemic, with a low risk of failure, and easy to implement as a side business during a pandemic. Budikdamber or also known as fish farming in buckets, can be an alternative business that can be done to maintain food security and increase income during a pandemic. Budikdamber is a form of fish farming that is inexpensive and easy to implement. The Budikdamber extension activity is one way to educate the community around Bolok Village, West Kupang, NTT. This PkM program was carried out with the output of the Budikdamber extension activity on November 9, 2020, attended by 56 participants from Bolok Village, West Kupang District, Kab. Kupang. The output of this program is that the people of Bolok Village are more educated about the easy and inexpensive practice of catfish farming in order to maintain independent food security in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and at the same time become an alternative solution for people's income, because they do not use large land and can take advantage of the yard. .
