Abstract

Fish growth can be triggered with a good feeding. To increase the efficiency, feeding strategies are needed through feed restriction or periodically fasted. This study aims to determine the effect of periodically fasted on the growth and survival rates of the selected BEST tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The fishes with the length and weight average of 4 cm and 3 g, respectively were reared in the pool with the size of 4 m x 3 m and the water height of 80 cm. The study used a completely random design with four treatments and three replication, namely (A) fish fed every day, (B) fish experiencing cycles of periodic feed restriction 1/1, fasted and fed one day, (C) fish experiencing cycles of periodic feed restriction 3/3, fasted and fed for three days, and (D) non-selected with fed every day (control). During the rearing period of 60 days, fish were fed with pelleted commercial diet (28% protein), 3% of total body weight of the fish per day. The results showed that the selected tilapia on the treatment A gave a significant difference (P<0.05) the growth value (length and weight), biomass and food conversion ratio (FCR) with non-selected tilapia in treatment D (control). Meanwhile, treatment B did not show any significant difference (P>0.05) on treatment A. Feed efficiency in fish fasted was obtained to have relatively similar results and minimize the production cost of by using relative less feed.

Abstract

Embryonic development of Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer is a critical phase in the success of larval rearing production in a hatchery. Low production of larvae has been the drawback of the Asian seabass aquaculture owing to diseases and microbial infection to the eggs, causing low egg viability. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different doses of papaya leaf extracts during embryonic development to improve egg hatchability and larval survival. Six different doses of papaya leaf extracts of 2, 4, 6, 10, 20, and 25 mL were used as treatments arranged triplicates in five liter aquaria. The newly fertilized eggs (99 eggs) were immersed in each treatment for five minutes and fifteen seconds. Subsequently, the eggs were moved into 10 L incubation tanks, and samples were collected for embryogenesis observation. The hatchability of eggs was significantly different among treatments. The hatchability of larvae in group with dose of 4 mL was the best treatment (93.94 ± 0.1%) followed by 2 mL (93.88 ± 3%), and 6 mL (90.91 ± 3.0%). The different doses of papaya leaf extract significantly affected larval survival. The highest survival rate of larvae was 2 mL (93%) followed by 4 mL (90%) and 6 mL (70%). There was no significant difference in the hatching time of larvae. The fastest hatching time occurred at the dose of 6 mL about 13 hours and 30 minutes, followed by 2 mL and 4 mL treatment for about 14 hours. This study recommends that the doses of 2 mL or 4 mL of papaya leaf extracts have potential impacts on the improvement of larval rearing production for Asian seabass hatchery.

Abstract

The very low survival rate of larvae is a limiting factor in seed production for yellow fin tuna. Larvae die mass on day ten to juveniles, with a survival value of less than 0.05%. The main factor causing the death of tuna larvae is the circle of water currents in the rearing tank which results in surfacing death and sinking death. This study aims to determine whether yellowfin tuna (YFT) larvae reared at different aeration designs in rearing tanks have an impact on larvae survival. The studi was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications: four aeration points in the middle as A, four aeration points at the bottom of B and a combination of two middle aeration points and two aeration points at the bottom C. One day old larvae were stocked in round tanks with a volume of 700 L at a density of 10.0000 individuals per tanks. Observations survival, daily growth rate, diversity coefficient and water quality were carried out for 13 days of rearing. Research result show Rearing larvae with aeration design at the bottom and a combination has a significant effect on the survival of yellow fin tuna with survival 0,31±0,04% and 0,30±0,06%. Daily length growth rate, coefficient of variation and water quality parameters in the three treatment had no significant effect. Treatments A, B and C extended value of growth rate of length 6%, 5,69% and 5,62%. Value of coefficient of diversity 4,66%, 5,69% and 4,79%.
