Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan prefix. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Sumber data didapatkan dari 40 orang mahassiswa angkatan ketiga tahun ajaran 2015/ 2016 STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat dengan menggunakan random sampling teknik. Peneliti menggunakan tes vocabulary prefix berbentuk pilihan berganda. Hasil analisis data penelitian menunjukkan persentase kemampuan skor mahasiswa dengan klasifikasi kemampuan baik berjumlah 25%, kemampuan cukup baik berjumlah 41,7% dan kemampuan kurang berjumlah 16,7%. Persentase kemampuan mahasiswa yang sudah mampu menggunakan prefix berjumlah 16,7%. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa menggunakan prefix tergolong cukup baik. This research was aimed at finding out students’ ability in using prefix. This was a descriptive research. The source of data of this research was taken from 40 students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra at the third year registered in 2015/2016 academic year by using random sampling technique . The researcher used prefix vocabulary test in multiple choice form. The result of this research showed that the percentage of students’ score in good category 25%, fair 41.7%,  poor 16.7%. The percentage of students who were able to use prefix was 16.7%. So, it can be concluded that students’ ability in using prefix was fair.      Key words: students’ ability, prefix

Abstract

This research aims to develop a textbook for the Basic Reading subject by using multimodality and oriented to character education. This research is research and development, which refers to the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation). Subjects of this research are students and lecturers who have taken part in the Basic Reading subject at English Education Department STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Data collection techniques used are document analysis, questionnaire, interview, and expert judgments. The results of need analysis show that the textbook used in Basic Reading subject has not oriented to character education and used multimodality yet. The development of Basic Reading has been validated by education experts and practitioners (lecturers). Based on the validation of experts and practitioners, this textbook is included in the very well category and confirmed as the feasibility to use. The trial results in implementing the book show that the N-Gain calculation shows 0.43, which is categorized as moderate, which means the book improves students’ cognitive learning outcomes in the reading subject and also instills core ethical values in daily living. Thus, this textbook is feasible to be used in the learning process at Basic Reading Subject.

Abstract

Recently, there has been an increase in crime, with one of the contributing factors being the increase in the need for life and other conflicts of interest. The crimes were eventually made public by some media outlets, one of which was the social media site Facebook, among others. This research aims to attempt to uncover how the criminal's discourse can be expressed succinctly through the use of critical discourse analysis from Theo Van Leeuwen's point of view by employing critical discourse analysis. This research operates qualitative research models in conjunction with content analysis techniques. According to the findings of this study, there are several concepts of sentences, including (1) determination-indetermination, (2) assimilation-individualization, (3) nomination-identification, (4) dissociation, and (5) categorization, among others. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that when releasing criminal news, the author (journalist) still appears partial to the executor or actor by encircling the criminal perpetrators or perpetrators. Some have explained that, despite the perpetrator's already known, the news writer did not write the story.

Abstract

Communication problems may occur in EIL contexts when English language users from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds conveying their messages. Being intelligible should not be seen as simple as pronunciation problems but it has other essential issues beyond it. To overcome such problem, there is a need for the English language learners to be aware of the intelligibility issues. This paper discusses the importance of introducing the intelligibility issues in EIL contexts for English language learners at secondary education in order to prepare them to communicate effectively with the diverse English language users around the world. The analytical scheme developed by Hu and McKay (2014) which defines the dimension of integrating multilingual and multicultural practices is adopted to select the YouTube video clips for the teaching materials. This practical guidance for introducing the intelligibility issues to the secondary school students could be employed by the English teachers to raise their students’ awareness toward the construct of intelligibility in EIL contexts.

Abstract

Peer feedback on oral presentation is still an unexplored area. Much research has been conducted on peer feedback in various teaching and learning contexts, only a few about how peer gives feedback on his/her partner’ oral presentations. The study described here focuses using peer feedback on oral presentations. Analyzing data from semi-structured interviews, this case study investigated impact of giving peer feedback on oral presentations used by English as Foreign Language (EFL) college students on other student’s oral presentation tasks. Data analysis revealed that the peer gave oral feedback mainly focused on content-related criteria (quality of introduction, structure, and conclusion). Most of the peers focused on the nature of the delivery (eye-contact, vocal delivery, enthusiasm, interaction with the audience and body-language), and a few focused on a general quality and on the design of the students’ PowerPoint (PPT) slides.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh beberapa kendala yang dialami oleh siswa saat mengerjakan penilaian yang biasanya dikerjakan secara luring kemudian beralih menjadi daring selama masa pandemi Covid-19. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana sikap siswa dalam penilaian luring dan daring pada mata pelajaran bahasa inggris di SMKN 1 Lubuk Sikaping. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan desain survei yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana perilaku siswa saat guru memberikan penilaian secara luring dan daring pada mata pelajaran bahasa inggris. Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 100 orang siswa kelas XII di SMKN 1 Lubuk Sikaping dengan teknik pengambilan data random sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuisioner dan wawancara. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa siswa kelas XII di SMKN 1 Lubuk Sikaping masing-masing memiliki sikap positif dan negatif pada penilaian luring dan daring. Sikap positif dan negatif ini dapat dilihat dari tiga komponen sikap yaitu kognitif, afektif dan psikomotor mereka.

Abstract

Penelitian ini di latar belakangi oleh tantangan akademik terkait dengan perubahan kurikulum terbaru yang disebut dengan kurikulum Merdeka.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui representasi gender dalam buku teks Bahasa Inggris yang berjudul “Bahasa Inggris : Tingkat Lanjut” untuk kelas XI di sekolah menengah atas yang di terbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset dan Teknologi Republik Indonesia, 2022. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Sumber data dari penelitian ini, peneliti menfokuskan pada 4 teks cerita tentang teks Naratif. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan cara membaca teks cerita satu persatu, kemudian memilih dan mengelompokkan kata-kata yang menyebutkan gender laki-laki dan perempuan didalam teks cerita dan yang terakhir peneliti menghitung untuk menemukan perbedaan frekuensi dari gender laki-laki dan perempuan. Dari hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa Dari total jumlah kata pada teks cerita 1 sampai 4, sebanyak 3.275 menunjukkan hasil yang terbagi menjadi dua kelompok, yaitu pada gendered words laki-laki persentasenya 0,48% dan pada perempuan persentasenya 2,38%. Sedangkan pada kata ganti feminim dan maskulinpresentase laki-lakisebesar 1,00% dan perempuan3,29%. Dari 4 teks cerita, persentase yang dihitung oleh peneliti menemukan bahwa ada lebih banyak perempuan daripada laki-laki baik pada kata gendered words maupun kata ganti feminin dan maskulin.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa dalam menonton Podcast dalam proses pembelajaran. Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah adanya berbagai persepsi oleh mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris tentang penggunaan Podcast yang digunakan oleh dosen di kelas Advancded Listening. Metode penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara sebagai instrumennya. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat, dari kelas Advanced Listening, termasuk 25 mahasiswa yang sudah menggunakan podcast sebelumnya. Hasil penelitian ini berdasarkan dari persepsi mahasiswa sangat bagus, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa peggunaan Podcast penting dalam proses belajar. Sebagian besar peserta setuju bahwa mereka menyukai podcast karena membantu mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is motivated by the use of reading strategies by English students based on gender in the classroom. The study used a survey research design involving 38 students of English education study program consisting of 15 male students and 23 female students. Data were collected using the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire developed by Mokhtari and Sheory (2002). Data were analyzed using a survey and statistical test independent sample t-test was conducted to determine the differences between women and men. The results of the analysis using the independent sample t-test showed that there was no significant difference in all subscales of gender differences in the use of reading strategies. Thus, gender does not play a role in determining the reading strategy used.Keywords: Gender, English Students, Reading Strategy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kepercayaan guru dalam penggunaan Youtube sebagai media pembelajaran dalam mengajar Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan  case study dengan jumlah 1 orang responden guru Bahasa Inggris  yang mengajar menggunakan media youtube di SMAN 5 Sijunjung. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi ceklis, catatan lapangan dan wawancara dalam bentuk semi-struktur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru Bahasa Inggris di SMAN 5 Sijunjung memiliki kepercayaan direct transmission dalam penggunaan youtube sebagai media pembelajaran.
