Abstract

This research aims to develop a textbook for the Basic Reading subject by using multimodality and oriented to character education. This research is research and development, which refers to the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation). Subjects of this research are students and lecturers who have taken part in the Basic Reading subject at English Education Department STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Data collection techniques used are document analysis, questionnaire, interview, and expert judgments. The results of need analysis show that the textbook used in Basic Reading subject has not oriented to character education and used multimodality yet. The development of Basic Reading has been validated by education experts and practitioners (lecturers). Based on the validation of experts and practitioners, this textbook is included in the very well category and confirmed as the feasibility to use. The trial results in implementing the book show that the N-Gain calculation shows 0.43, which is categorized as moderate, which means the book improves students’ cognitive learning outcomes in the reading subject and also instills core ethical values in daily living. Thus, this textbook is feasible to be used in the learning process at Basic Reading Subject.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify medical students’ problems in following English online learning on the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used qualitative descriptive research using a survey design. The participants of this research were 183 medical students of Baiturahmah University who taking English subject. Data was collected through questionnaires that spread by using Google Forms. The data were analyzed quantitatively. The results of the study showed that the medical students had problems in English online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The problems faced were the networks, the limited quota, the environment, the motivation, and the comprehension of materials. It is hoped that the institutions, the lecturers, and the students find the solution in creating effective, conducive, and valuable learning.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an English teaching material using the Total Physical Response (TPR) learning model and oriented to character education. The Research and Development (RnD) is employed in this study which referred to the Plomp model of development which consisted of four stages. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, validity tests, and effectiveness. Subjects of the research were fifth-grade students of SDIT Mutiara Pariaman City and English teachers. Data analyzed were carried out quantitatively and qualitatively. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The validity test showed that the developed product can be employed in the classroom by expert judgments with an average score of 86%. The result in implementing the product showed the product is effectively improving students’ English ability and their ethical values in the learning process. Thus, the English teaching material using the Total Physical Response (TPR) learning model and oriented into character education is feasible and effective to be used in the fifth grade of elementary school.

Abstract

This study aims to describe English teaching materials and identify the needs of English language teaching materials based on character education by using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method at SDIT Mutiara Bunda Kota Pariaman. This research is a Research Development (R and D) with qualitative descriptive research design. Participants of this study were teachers and students of grade V SDIT Mutiara Bunda Kota Pariaman. Instruments of this research are questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The results showed that teachers and students needed English-based teaching materials based on character education. The teaching material needed is a teaching material that is easy to understand and comprehend and it can be used by teachers and students. In addition, the teaching materials are also able to make students active, creative, and communicative. Moreover, the attitude the students wants are a confident attitude, responsibility, and love to to work hard. Thus, it can be concluded that English teaching materials need to be developed using Total Physical Response (TPR) method based on character education
