Abstract

Historically, wearing adornments on pierced on body parts has been associated withmany cultures as manifestations of religious or cultural identities. Currently, its usehas a broad acceptance among young people. The most common sites for piercings arethe tongue and lower lip in the oral cavity. Several complications may be associatedwith this practice with the most frequently observed being halitosis, periodontitis, tooth fracture, glossitis, and the formation of abscesses. This paper was a case reportof patient who had a complication from piercing on the tongue located under theoverlying mucosa. It was suggested that a local habit was a possible initiator of thiscomplication.

Abstract

Many kinds of spicy plants grow in Indonesia. One of them is kayu manis(Cinnamomun burmanii) which is used not only for cooking, but also as traditionalmedicine. One of the components contained in the bark and leaves of kayu manis isvolatile oil. Generally, volatile oil has an antifungal effect, therefore it’s inhibitoryeffect was tested against fungi. The study was conducted to evaluate the anti fungaleffect of kayu manis to Candida albicans. The method used in this study wasdetermination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)followed by determinationof zone inhibition around the disc. The result showed that kayu manis has the highestantifungal activity against Candida albicans with 1% of MIC.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS)is a common oral mucosal disease in human. This disease affect 20-25% ofpopulation. The etiology remains unclear, but some of cytokine such as TNF-α is suspected to contribute in thepathogenesis of RAS. TNF-α is commonly measured by PBMC and lesional biopsy. These are invasive method andhigh skilled requirement. Another study used lesional swab to measure this cytokine without correlating the resultwith TNF-α measured by PBMC level. This study aimed to asses TNF-α level correlation between lesional swab andPBM of RAS patients. The study involved 10 subjects by inclusion criteria. Subjects have lesion swab and PBMCexamined. Samples were analyzed by ELISA method. There is a correlation between lesional swab and PBMC ofTNF-α level RAS patients but this correlation did not statistically significant.

Abstract

There are 80 types of known herpes virus, 8 of them can cause infection on humans. They are herpes simplex virus(HSV) 1 and 2, varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, human herpes virus (HHV6) Aand B, and paramyxovirus. HSV1, HSV2, and VZV are the virus known to cause oral mucosal diseases. This paperaims to review and discuss orofacial pain caused by herpes virus infection. Detail anamnesis about prodromal signand symptom with clinical features that vesicles, labial and intraoral lesions, and unilateral distribution of lesionsare characterized oral herpes virus infections. It can be concluded that detailed anamnesis and an understandingabout oral clinical sign and symptom may confirm diagnosis of herpes virus infections.

Abstract

Background: Candida albicans are normal flora in the oral cavity and can turn into pathogens. Antifungal drugs need to be given to inhibit the growth of the fungus; using traditional medicine, for example moringa seeds. Moringa seeds contain natural compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids as an antifungal. Objective: To determine the inhibition of Moringa oleifera L. seed extract on the growth of C.albicans. Method: This experimental laboratory research was designed with posttest only control group with agar/Kirby Bauer diffusion method, carried out with 4 repetitions by treated extract with 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% concentration, positive control (ketoconazole) and negative controls (distilled water). Results: Krusskal Wallis test showed p value = 0.000 (p <0.05),means Moringa seed extract with concentrations 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% had a significant effect on inhibiting the growth of C.albicans. Conclusion: Moringa seed extract can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans.

Abstract

Background: One of natural materials used to prevent oral cavity infections caused by bacteria is Moringa plant extracts. The ingredients contained in Moringa plants are phenolic, alkaloid, tannin, and pterygospermin is thought to be able to inhibit bac-terial growth. Staphylococcus aureus has been known for a long time as a pathogen in the medical field but only a few studies were carried out in the oral cavity. Objective: To determine the inhibition test of Moringa oleifera L extract towards the growth of S.aureus bacteria. Method: The S.aureus culture was inserting on the surface of the nutrient so that it had solidified in a petri dish. Moringa seed extract was diluted in concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%. Paper disks are placed on agar me-dia contained populations of S.aureus bacteria, and after 24 hours the inhibition zone were measured. Results: The average diameter of inhibition zone at concentrations of 5%; 10%; 20%; 40% are 6.7 mm, 7.21 mm, 7.23 mm, 7.6 mm consecutively. Conclusion: A concentration of 5% Moringa oleifera L extract can inhibit the growth of S.aureus bacteria.

Abstract

Introduction: Apart from fish, other marine products that can be processed are seaweed. Sea grape (Caulerpa Sp.) is one of the seaweeds, which contains active ingredients, namely flavonoid, saponin, carotenoid, phenol, alkaloid and tannin which are use-ful as antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic and cytotoxin, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory. Objective: To determine the effect of sea grape extract towards wound healing on the corners of the lips of white wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by S.aureus and C.albicans, and to compare them with the antimicrobial gentamicin and the antifungal miconazole. Methods: Pure experimental research with posttest only control group design; the wound of 24 male wistar white rats divided into: group 1 in-duced by S.aureus and then given sea grape extract, group 2 induced by C.albicans then smeared with sea grape extract, group 3 induced by S.aureus then given gentamicin, and group 4 was induced by C.albicans and then given miconazole. The length of the wound was periodically measured as an indicator of the healing process. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Re-sults: The effect on each group were tested using Friedman, showed significant in each group (p = 0.001). Different test with Mann Whitney group 1 and group 3 (antibacterial control) showed significantly different results on testing days 1-5; group 2 and group 4 (antifungal control) also showed significantly different results on days 1-4; groups 1 and 2 showed insignificant results. Conclusion: Sea grape extract had a significant effect on wound healing in the lip corners of male wistar rats induced by S.aureus and C.albicans. Sea grape extract had the same effect with positive antibacterial and antifungal control.

Abstract

Objective: to assess awareness of senior community in the Belawa distric, Wajo, South Sulawesi, Indonesia regarding their oral soft tissue abnormality specifically regard to Oral potentially malignant disorders, and to assess community ability to descript any pain or uncomfortably origin from their oral cavity. Methods: A self-made questionnaire written in Indonesia language was given to the old aged-adult based on WHO criteria with age range between 45 to 75 years old, who was willing to participate in this study. The questioner consists some picture representing oral mucosal cavity with clinical feature of some ulcers, clinical feature of candida infection, and some clinical appearances of oral potentially malignant disorders. Results: In term of oral mucosal diseases questions, 22 (55%) participants had history of ulceration, however only 5 (45%) participants could specifically point out its previous ulcer location. However, history of pain only stated by 11 (28%) participants, 24 (60%) did not experienced any pain, and 5 (12%) did not answer the questions. Conclusion: knowledge and awareness regarding oral health lesion, especially the associated-potentially malignant lesion was far from ideal in the Belawa Community.
